That first scene where they slowly, one by one, crest the hill and come through the dust was very cool! Well Done!

It was a neat opportunity to film them and watch them come over the crest of the hill one by one. It’s too bad it was so dusty so you can clearly see each one but filming from either side there would be that issue.

I can even smell the unique smells of harvest watching this, rain or no rain it takes an incredible amount of work and organizing to accomplish a harvest. That being said before I quit farming we grew wheat both winter and spring, barley and canola. Used John Deere, Massey, White combines and the custom cutter usually brought 12 of the latest Deere machines. I don’t miss the stress but the fragrance of freshly tilled soil and the smell of harvest bring a lot of emotion and memories.

Have not farm since mid 80's. I had a 550 Massey Ferguson 16 ft header, and a 715 IHC 16 ft.hseder.. raised rice, wheat, soybeans,,, both were good machines....most of my old friends are using John Deere or Classe Combines Now....with 35 ft headers and are growing mostly beans and rice now on precisioned leveled ground..I remember in 1969 my dad still had his 95 John Deere with a 14 ft. Grain header and a 2 row wide corn head that my grandad had purchased for a 45 John Deere combine in the 50's.

The wheat yields very well this year. Over 100 bu in most fields. I saw allot in the 112 to 118 range. Because the wheat heads were so heavy a week before harvest a soaking rain with some wind over two days lodged the wheat pretty well. The conditions across the fields very from flat to tangled so every pass has been different as far as cutting height.

@bigtractorpower3 жыл бұрын
Very cool. How do you control weeds in organic small grains? Here we have organic corn and soybeans. They cultivate them several times.
@LucendsRanch3 жыл бұрын
@@bigtractorpower It is very hard. Crop rotation is a big factor. Not so much between grain crops but between Alfalfa for 3-4 years, break it, get a clean crop of hemp or oats off of it then go from there. The longer it is broke the worse the weeds get. We use mechanical weed control which is just a heavy harrow that we run over crop when it has 3-5 leaves. It comes back strong and the weeds get knocked back. We also treat our seed with compost tea, soft rock phosphate, silica and sugar which helps it get ahead and canopy over weed quickly. We also rely on the electrical energy in the soil. High biological energy is good for the crop and bad for the weeds so we spray organic fert like liquid fish, soft rock phos, molasses, calcium, humic acid, etc. The prices of the grain has to justify it though and right now it isn’t. We believe in it but it is a heck of a lot harder than conventional.
