Thanks Dave. Ex mechanic here, haven’t worked as a mechanic for many years. I used to pay someone to service our wheel bearing and brakes but I’m retired now so I guess I will have to get my hands dirty again 😁

Hi Dave, it's great to see someone that knows how to pack wheel bearings with grease. A really good video, well done.

Great video Dave, prompted me to do mine on the Tanami X15 L when you pointed out the bearing shell not in the correct position and since the van is close to a year old and has done a few km's. Both shells were recessed down about 5 ml from that ridge and everything still looked very good bearings like new. I do hope Austrack have someone doing QC on these kind of things.

Done this job more than I’d care to admit on my old Belco boat trailer which had a tendency to burn out random wheel bearings frequently on the motorway🥹That’s another story anyway! That said really appreciate the vid David as gives me clarity on the job before I do my Tanami. Cheers bloke 👍👍

Thanks Dave. Main reason for watching this was to see what size bearings the Austrack uses and happy to see they are heavy duty and not the cheap trailer bearings some big name van companies are using. These should be standard!

Great work David. Did you ever do suspension upgrade?

As a mechanic I would never reuse split pins

Can you advise me the type and bearing size so I can have some in storage

Thanks mate! A question on putting the cap back on .... did you fill up any of the cap with grease before tapping it back down? (as I notice there was grease in the cap and on the "castle nut" when you took it off). Cheers
@davidhall9932 Жыл бұрын
No need to put grease in the cap. The grease in there is just grease that has worked its way out of the hub through the bearings. Just put it on dry.

Nice work David on the split pin professional job & as I kid I used to have to pack many bearings for a trucking company, but I say your way is better then I was taught. How you finding the van ?
@davidhall993210 ай бұрын
Finding the van great. Just did 8 weeks up the centre of Aus, Birdsville and Oodnadatta. No breakage and no dust in van.

Nice job David. Those wheel studs look accessible to remove whilst drum is out. I'm of the understanding that the coarse thread varies from AU vehicle threads. I'm hearing that snapped studs are as issue with those vans. Would you consider changing out? I'm on the fence. Thanks again mate.
@davidhall99322 жыл бұрын
I have seen some that have snapped studs but wouldn’t say it’s common. The studs were accessible from the back so if you did break one you’d just have to remove the drum and punch it out and then punch a new one in. Wouldn’t be too bad.

Hi Dave. Thanks for this. Great to get my head around the workings of the wheels in more detail. As someone who did loose a wheel on our Austrack Tanami X15 it's always a slightly nervous ride when hooking up again. Your explanation of the cup not being pressed in enough at 12 minutes was really interesting, as it's one of the few possible explanations that stacks up with our experience. Think I might get it examined specifically before our next big trip.

Great video Dave. On a side note, and from a mechanics point of view….have you upgraded from standard suspension at all?
@davidhall993210 ай бұрын
Yes. Did that recently. Was getting a lot of wobble - not sway, when heading up the Stuart Highway. Fitted Monroe and they seem to be good.

After paying so much money for a Caravan why don't the put grease baddies on them
