Just this morning on my way to any appt, I saw a tractor trailer with a back trailer tire on fire. Tried to get the truckers attention and signalling and yelling out the window that his trailer was on fire and to pull over. He just waved and kept driving. Never pulled over. Was completely oblivious. Called 911 and reported it to them.

Driving the free way and seeing a tire fly off a truck like this would be upsetting to say the least.

Someone I know saw exactly that. It is quite shocking to behold.

The best way to fight a fire if FD isn't present and you wish to save your truck is to use a 1.5 gal Cold Fire extinguisher. It's proven to be effective on fires as a wetting agent and the units can be refilled with an air compressor and the agent is cheap. On the attached video pay attention to the time frame of around 2 min 45 seconds. This is a 54" tractor tire on fire. Michelin Tire uses this product in their facilities You Tube Cold Fire Backpack to see the video

And stinks. Saw a tire fire this morning on a tractor trailer that was driving down the highway. Was able to smell it before we even saw it. And the trucker was completely oblivious. He just kept trying. We tried signalling and yelling out the window (both our windows were down), to tell him he was on fire and to pull over. But he just waved and kept going. We called 911. Had to get off the next exit though. So hoping they got him stopped and fire out out on time.

For reasons to not try to extinguish a tire fire, how about all that pneumatic energy stored up inside which would be increasing due to the heat searching for a weakness in the tire. That energy is more than enough to sever a person in half. I wonder what they would do to eliminate that danger after the fire is out. To be honest I think the pneumatic tire is a very old and costly (tire repairs and failures) design that should be obsolete already.

On the evening of October 1, 2012, while traveling from Dallas to Fort Worth on I-30, I became a victim of a run away tire which landed on the hood of my car, It just missed going through my windshield. The semi continued on his merry way without stopping leaving me with a near totaled car and enormous medical expenses due to two surgeries following the accident. There is a trucker out there who nearly took my life that night and kept driving. I have lost all faith in the trucking industry.
