11:03 - Fun Fact: The contestant who solved "I've Got A Good Feeling About This" with just the letter L (unfortunately not zero letters, like Emile thought) got referenced in the Xbox 360 version of Wheel of Fortune. There's an achievement called "I've A Good Feeling About This!" that you earn by solving a puzzle with just one letter revealed. I earned that achievement with "CHICKEN SOUP", which is not nearly as impressive. :P

Honestly, achievements should be tailored either to really silly stuff, things that players like to do, or known challenge runs. If, e.g., your series tends to attract low-level runs, then it makes sense to have a lot of "beat boss X under level Y" achievements. Or just go the Sakurai way and make them neat little challenges in and of themselves.

A benefit of achievements is giving players some acknowledgement for doing things outside the scope of normal players, the kinds of things you would never do if you didn't absolutely LOVE the game. You wouldn't want to lock anything too major behind those accomplishments, but you can give the player a badge proving they've done it.

9:56 I dunno, really. You could come up with some pretty interesting additions to games with Achievements systems, ones that invite you to think of interesting new ways to play. But most achievements don't actually do that, and go for either the low hanging fruit like "start playing the game!" and "beat the final boss!", or the 100% completion stuff like "beat the secret superboss", "fill out the monsterpedia" and "blend every type of milkshake!". Neither type of achievement really adds anything to it, as 100% completionists would already be aiming for 100% anyway, and don't need achievements to tell them how to do their job, and the ones from playing the game... well, you've already gotten us to play.

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy I felt was interesting about this. Levels in the original already had Gems, Dragons/Orbs/Eggs and Skill Points, but the remake added one Achievement/Trophy to each level and most of them required you to do something you didn't get a collectable for in the original. (Except 2's Breeze Harbour, where that give you an achievement for the trolley mission for the memes)

LEGO Lord of the Rings has a few rather amusing achievements. Sure, there are the achievements for clearing each level and getting all of various collectibles, but there's also things like "Don't tell the Elf..." for throwing Gimli 30 times, "...And away he goes, Precious!" for defeating Gollum as Gollum, "One does not simply..." for... well, walking into Mordor, "It won't be that easy!" for jumping into the fires of Mount Doom as Isildur in the prologue, and "Taking the Hobbits to Isengard." for visiting Isengard as every playable Hobbit.

Always thought if a game is gonna add achievements, they need to give you more then just a digital Trophy. Xenoblade Chronicles 1's achievements for example gives you with extra exp for leveling up anywhere from 20 to 50,000 depending on difficulty. Gives you a better incentive for doing 100% imo

I like achievements when they aren't milestones and/or progression and instead encourage a unique play style, exploration or challenge. I'll accept cumulative challenges if they're the "in one go" or "in one session" type of challenges.
