I would put Nynaeve above Moiraine. What Mat, Nynaeve, and Rand have in common is their rejection of the insane customs and standards and worldview of Randland. Egwene, Elayne, and Perrin never break away from their worldview. Egwene totally buys into and defends the order of the Aes Sedai. Elayne buys into aristocracy, noblesse oblige and all that. Perrin actually judges himself a freak and a criminal and takes forever to embrace his special powers. They are great by the standards of their world, but their standards are so different from the readers’ that they never quite appeal to the audience like Rand, Mat, and Nynaeve, who reject the expectations of their society.

Now at the 4th book I can´t really overlook the annoying behaviour of so many characters anymore. So I´m taking a break right now, not sure when I´ll continue but I want to know how it ends. I don't care how little "screen time" he gets, I love love LOVE Tam. He's easily top 3 characters for me from WoT. As far as him not getting an arc goes, he doesn't need an arc because he's a paragon character. He's already come to maturity and his role in the tale is to help the main characters (mainly Rand) come to their character arcs.

Also, Perrin's placement is fair. He spends way too much time fighting his own abilities. By contrast, Rand accepted his by book 3 and Matt by book 6. Perrin didn't accept the Wolf and leadership till book 13.

Perrin does not describe himself that way, but people are flocking to his leadership. The two river people are the first to regard them as a their lord, eventhough they havent had lords in centuries

i guess it is a reread character. i only liked her arc after rand picks her up to make the "bonfire". the worst offence for me was when she and elayne were not using mats skills and resources in ebou dar. the only reason given is mat has a potty mouth and is indecent but at the same time they claim the world depends on the job. clearly one is more important and you can fix the other later.

Nynaeve is an awesome character, I already loved her but now on my second read I'm just blown away by how incredibly powerful she is right from the beginning and it never goes to her head. It doesn't corrupt her at and that says so much about her inner strength

My only real disagreement with this list is Siuan Sanche. I love her development, her strength, and her intelligence that is so very present on the page. She went through something horrible, continued through what is essentially institutionalised bullying, and still came out on top (if only on the background). She is phenomenal.

I felt the middle of the series was a slog, but my second reread of the full series was an eye-opener for me - #thereisnoslog. I had actually feared the Faile captive section, and Rand's journey to Dumai's Wells, but it seemed to flow so well this last time.

@Chris George That's the real kicker though. If you started reading the series in the early years (I started back in '95), then you could be put off by the fact that characters could disappear for a book (which meant years of waiting to find what happened with them), but the repetitions of the descriptions were refreshing. If you read the series through from beginning to end, the pacing of the series makes a lot more sense #ThereIsNoSlog but the repetition can be a bit much. Especially since Robert Jordan masterfully wove little nuggets of exposition into some of those repeated description, so you're missing valuable information if you skim. The true genius is this; whereas #WheelofTime is by no means a perfect series, it holds unique challenges AND discoveries whether it's your first time reading it, or your fifteenth. Whether you read it as it was released, or all at once.

I agree with many of the rankings here, but the big problem I see is what characters were left out. Thom, Berelain, Rhuarc, Grady, Sorilea, Verin, Cadsuane, Noal, Tylin, just to name a few. I guess you couldn't include all significant characters, but . . . Uno? He has very little screen time compared to so many others.

She's the only one around him, for a certain amount of time in the next books, who has some sort of unpredictability. And she's the mysteries legend as well on top of everything. I loved Cadsuane, and don't understand the hate she gets. She handles Rand almost perfectly (other than Tam's reintroduction). To me, she's like an older Nynaeve in that she's incredibly powerful and knowledgeable, and doesn't put loyalty to the White Tower above everything else.

Yeah Rand is the best character imo. Also, something I love about the WOT is that some of my absolute favorite characters have miniscule amounts of screen time, such as Verin, Androl, Pevara, and Furyk Karede.

Currently i hate egwene and my favourite characters are Tam,rand,mat and perrin. I hate the aiel they are evil idk if they will get better in the future or not? I strongly disagree, by that logic people should stop honoring George Washington, Thomas Jefferson etc. who enslaved a large population of America. I think characters shouldn't be expected to completely get rid of their cultural background/upbringing and see the most modern and progressive way as soon as as possible.

I think the hardest thing about this is that the characters are so different at at differing stages of the story. Book 4 Perrin is a total boss and we get so much depth from him but then he stagnates for 5 volumes, Nynaeve is pretty painful for several volumes but just sky rockets for the last 4 books getting better with every scene. Similarly with Egwene, she always growing, if not always so graciously, for a long time but when she clicks into gear its so damn satisfying.

But when you get to understand her underlying motivations and flaws a bit later on, it really puts her actions in a much more understanding and entertaining light. Just push through Lily!! Unpopular opinion: I love Faile's character arc. To put it very vaguely, she runs away from responsibility to have an adventure. She's a spoiled brat. But she finds her adventure, and in the course of that and all that follows, she learns to be a leader, she learns to appreciate her parents and all they taught her, and she takes on responsibility and bears it well. I think her growth is great and made all the better for her having real character flaws that don't just dissipate and culture that influences her every interaction.

I really like Faile too. When we first met her she was SO ANNOYING! But I really think when I was young I was a lot like her too. While the Saldean culture is a little intense, especially with the whole husband/wife dynamic, I really grew to appreciate her as a character. Her and Perrin were really perfect for each other.

After rereading the series my appreciation for Egwain has actually gone way day. The cause of this is the juxtaposition of her character motivations and development compared to Nyneave. The way Egwain bullies, belittles, and manipulates people to gain more knowledge/status just makes her so unlikable for me. Compared to Nyneave who's love for the people she watched grow up and hatred for suffering drives her, the difference in character motivation is so apparent in a reread it made liking Egwain impossible for me. Although her drive in a vacuum is admirable.

I loved your description of rand. Completely true of who he was. I would have to say elayne should be higher, as she helps shape and mold the farm boy to be able to handle other royalty and leaders. Also love the tam scene in the last book where he and rand can just practice and again be a father and son. And still have a few things to teach him.

@@martawolna6027 I think Matt beats Rand hands down, I actually disagree with Daniel here and think Rand fits the Mary Sue character perfectly - I don't think he earns his power, women throw themselves at him, and his "flaws" are cool and mostly thrust upon him due to his "condition" as opposed to real like Matt's feel. If your character can rarely ever be described as having done something awkward or cringey, I think you've written a Mary Sue

I'm one that would have put Egwene lower. I find that at least in the first half of the series whenever you're inside her head she's wrong. She has terrible people awareness and incorrectly assesses almost every situation. Especially around Rand. Some have suggested it could be due to corruption from Fain, but I don't know because Moiraine was around Fain at the same time and doesn't exhibit the same flaw.

Well Moiraine was an experienced Aes Sedai, who probably warded herself before dealing with Fain. Egwene at that point, wasn't even a Novice and often visited Fain without informing Moiraine.

I couldn't stand her Mary suing last 5-6 books, absolutely hate her and hated her pov. It would be perfect if she would be Suan puppet to manipulate with some Wise One's extra knowledge to show Suan that other nations woman's can be useful as well, so Egwene can be person to unite channelling woman, and she can still be channelling prodigy. But why teeneager would be ultimate manipulator who is always right and each of her plot is always working. Absolutely don't understand that. Leads to terrible character

I think that Egwene is one of the most hatable protagonists in the series. The only bad part of the resolution of her arc is that her redemption is precluded. She actually epitomizes the challenges that I have as a woman in reading Jordan's women characters. They are never handled as sympathetically as the men are, and, at times, I have felt the hatred for all of the women. I think that Sanderson does a good job of redeeming that flaw in the series/Jordan.

@Chris George I can see that. It was one of the hardest things for me on my first read through, where I felt that every single woman in the series was a manipulative and despicable b****. Some arcs evolve and make me love them (Nynaeve), others evolve and make me hate them more (Egwene), a couple are likable all the way through (I super identify with Min - I hate the way her arc (doesn't) resolve), and at least two quickly evolve from initially interesting to hated/invisible at the end (Faile and Berelain, and their conflict just underscores this).

The interesting thing about the term "Mary Sue," is that it usually refers to characters so OP that they break the plot, i.e. the plot bends to serve their needs. However, that is what it means to be Ta'veren, but Jordan and Sanderson write so brilliantly that it becomes an intellectual commentary and deconstruction of what it means. The characters think that they themselves are Mary Sues at various points in the plot, and that is when they see their greatest defeats. For example, consider Rand when he goes to meet the leaders of the rebellion. That is where he suffers one of his greatest wounds in the form of a dagger strike from Padan Fain that never recovers. Although it is from that wound that he gets the idea of how to cleanse Saidin, he quickly learns that it is a mistake to think himself invincible, even when his Mary Sueness is maxed out, which in turn makes him not a Mary Sue.

I really hope the show gives us Demandred scenes throughout the series. Just Demandred in some far off land doing his thing so that we can actually see this incredible thing that he successfully pulls off that in the books just felt completely out of left field. It really jarred me, it felt like "who's this guy? Who are all these people and where the heck did they come from? Ohhh it's one of the Forsaken we've seen twice in 14 books, ok. Yeah I guess this is supposed to be really impressive? It just feels random" I think Demandred is a character with a ton of potential if done right.

In the authors note of the River of Souls short story, Brandon states that he wanted to put in an entire sequence of chapters chronicling Demandred's journey and rise to power in Shara. We'd sympathize and cheer him on as he would be portrayed as a mirror to Rand as a chosen one and hero, then only at the end would he be revealed to be Demandred and this was all buildup to fight the heroes and kill Rand. It was cut because it was too much to have in the last book, but Brandon says it would have fit well if it started during books 7-10(since it would be new and exciting when the story sorely needed it). That sounded so awesome to me, and I think this is something they could capitalize on in the show. I actually enjoyed his appearance and surprise in the final book, but I think it could have been a lot better if done the other way. One of the best things about Demandred(and most of the other Forsaken as well) is his presence and backstory as a character. The dynamic between Demandred and Lews Therin/Rand is one of my favourite in anything I've read. The whole Fallen friend/rival trope, and how he is always half a step behind Lews Therin at everything, which caused intense hatred and jealousy to develop has always fascinated me. Despite this, we never really see Rand and Demandred interact or be shown to be similar(whether in ability or actions). That always felt like huge wasted potential since he was the most interesting Forsaken to me, even over Ishamael. He was the only one of them who didn't just want power for power(or the end all of existence like Ishamael). He was essentially a 'hero' with one overarching and overpowering flaw. There is something profoundly human about that which I love in a character. Wouldn't want to have a drink with the guy though.

I completely agree with Nyneve on that, I noticed it a lot on my second read through about her character. You see that protective strength, that willingness to do what needs to be done and that scene in the last book in the chapter 'A Knack. The huge sign of respect she gives to that character and showing that she may not like you but she understands your reasons.

I'd say I would definitely swap Logain and Siuan. You mentioned Logain's development and perseverance despite the events that happened to him. But Siuan had an even worse fall than he did. She fell to the same depth but from a much higher height. And where Logain kinda barely held on clinging to purely revenge, Siuan immediately leapt into action and became a massive political player in a world of channelers without being able to channel herself. Although honestly she became less interesting when she got her power back and when her thing with Bryne began because it's like she became a kid and suddenly forgot how to be a master schemer.

Daniel, I owe you thanks. I am by no means a reader at all. The last time I truly read a book was when I was 12. After watching your WoT videos and the spoilers I was convinced for the first time in over 8 years to read novels again. A few months later I am done and while much of it I already knew since I had read spoilers on purpose, this was absolutely phenomenal. I have never before found a story on the scale of this. With Amazon season 1 winding down, and being confused if I even remember the story anymore I'm doing a re(audio)read. I think the only disagreement I have with you here is Egwene. I get that she does just happen to get understanding really fast (her dreamfight leveraging levity of the Amyrlin Seat as an example), but my favorite character. Still healing from the the Mazrim Taim battle..... S tier: Matt, Egwene, Moiraine. Nynaeve surged in the latter books but didn't quite get S.
