I think a lot of people write off Geralt of Rivia because people either see him as boring tough guy who fights the monsters or because they see him as a video game character now. I really think that he is such a consistently interesting and sympathetic character who actually has depth to him, even though you wouldn’t expect it.
@TrashMetal19953 жыл бұрын
I agree, the whole point of Geralt's character is that he is supposed to have been stripped off his humanity during the mutation. His struggle with that and his constant fight to stay human in a world that simply expects him to kill, that is war-torn, and that treats him like the plague, is what really makes him so fascinating.

You really should read Michael Mooorcock, in particular Elric of Melnibone. Talk about conflicted characters. It's worth mentioning that he's the most perfect anti-Conan character you'll ever meet. characters you are familiar with that I think you are selling short (I do understand that in both cases, the respective universes are cluttered with great ones, but still...): Lord Vetinari and Michael Carpenter. And finally, two characters I didn't read as much as I should, but need more exposure to the general Fantasy readers: Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. A nice couple of honest rogues. Apropos of nothing, I'd like to have read (impossible now) a meeting of Death (Pratchett) and Death (Gaiman).

Exactly, if he likes Rake and Geralt, he needs to read their main inspiration. I mean, Dragnipur and even Nightblood must be inspired from Stormbringer
@Actorclown3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with this. Moorcock created some weird & amazing characters from Hawkmoon to Jerry Cornelius but Elric is the one to start with!! Conflicted & heroic anti-hero & anti-Conan. And some say the uncredited “inspiration” for Geralt.

Great video man but just 1 recommendation, maybe leave the names up for the honorable mentions a bit longer, the animation of the graphic building itself is longer than the time it sits with the name and so its hard to read the people's names quick enough. Loving the higher production quality with the graphics though! Keep up the great work and thanks for getting me back into fantasy a few years back!

One of the things I love about Fitz is that we spend years with him, starting with him being 6 years old and ending (at least the first trilogy) at age 20. In that way we know Fitz very well, like a friend who we grew up with. I find that very special. And Daniel, as you've only read the first trilogy and think a lot happened to Fitz, there are two more trilogies with him and he get shit done to him there too, there were many times I cried for him and cried of happiness for him too.

"...The Green Bone Saga is the penultimate example of, that!" - DG Well, then what is this mysterious best example?? Of course I kid, just FYI that penultimate means second to last. So if you are using it in a similar sense to how one uses ultimate as best, then penultimate would be the second best.

I’ve fought ten single combats and I won them all, but I fought on the wrong side and for all the wrong reasons. I’ve been ruthless, and brutal, and a coward. I’ve stabbed men in the back, burned them, drowned them, crushed them with rocks, killed them asleep, unarmed, or running away. I’ve run away myself more than once. I’ve pissed myself with fear. I’ve begged for my life. I’ve been wounded, often, and badly, and screamed and cried like a baby whose mother took her tit away. I’ve no doubt the world would be a better place if I’d been killed years ago, but I haven’t been, and I don’t know why...

Also some that aren't fully delved into yet but I really enjoy are Elodin (the Kingkiller Chronicles), Wit (the Stormlight Archive). Vin is my girl! Coming from someone that has struggled with depression and self confidence issues my whole life, she is bar none the most relatable to me characters I have ever known in any book. I think that she also suffers from some ptsd from all of the trials she has faced. Sanderson is a master at getting into the head of his characters and really giving you a gritty idea of their emotions.
@ChristmasLore4 жыл бұрын
Having crippling depression and anxiety, I personally do not care to read about it for pages on end. On the contrary, it tightens my own feelings, making things worse. Same goes for Glints and the physical pain. It was so striking when I read it, but I won't ever read it again. Can't bear to break into tears at each and every description of his (my) pain.

I'm reading the Dresden files and despite only being two books deep I have never met a character that I can relate to more. The imperfections of his immediate actions, the way he gets pushed to the edge and then makes another mistake only to have to reconcile to the fact that he is human is just magnificent.

@@fremenkiel1 I'm on the home stretch currently on chapter 39 of Ghost story. It did just keep getting better. It's so crazy how Jim Butcher can give you that warm fuzzy feeling with the way the format repeats and how predictable the set ups are but then he really pulls you in to this intense world with people going through just extraordinary experiences. I have a very powerful quote from Oathbringer by Sanderson. After everything that Dalinar had gone through and discovering what he had done. To be given that easy out, to be gift wrapped the ability to just blame someone else who admitted to manipulating him, and to look them in the face and proclaim: You cannot have my pain. Kaladin is my favorite from the series but that one line elevated Dalinar so high in my eyes and makes me proud to wear Kholinar Blue
