"The hills are alive with the sound of music." And Nynaeve listens to the wind.

On the Sound of Music and Nynaeve: A young woman in her early 20s, a novice in a nunnery, shows up at a massive noble estate run by a gruff military man in his 40s, and convinces him to marry her against his better judgement.

What makes me cry in that scene in TSR is when Perrin says how his mother always loved apple blossoms. It makes me tear up every single time

Nynaeve likes the sound of music because she's a softy underneath all the layers, and all she wants to do is take care of everyone like they're her kids. (Also she's my favorite character and I love the sound of music so we had to have that in common)

I thought it was because it was a romance with a gruff military captain dude.

Another great round of meme reactions. Rudy is a great movie. It is a classic underdog story. He has to prove himself over and over again as a student and athlete to play football for Notre Dame. He is too small and too working class, but is VERY persistent.

Regarding Nynaeve and the Sound of Music, the closest thing I could find is as follows: Maria (Julie Andrews) and the children returning from a boat ride on the lake, which ends abruptly when their boat overturns. This mirrors Nynaeve being balefired by Moggy and finding herself under a capsized boat.
@tofystedeth2 күн бұрын
Possibly also, Maria started out thinking she was gonna be a nun but opted for a different career. Maybe also something about the sound of music == listening to the wind?

I also wonder if the Mat movie being 'A League of Their Own' is referring to the famous line "There's no crying in baseball!!" from Tom Hanks' coach character? 🤔

Rudy is a true story about the youngest son in a blue collar family. He grew up watching notre dame football with his family during a time when both notre dame was dominant in college football and only white collar families could send kids to college. His dad was a supervisor at a steel plant, his brothers worked there, his best friend and he worked there after high school as well. The movie follows his time when he leaves everyone at home and goes to college, working to pay his way through holy cross classes to try and get grades good enough to transfer to notre dame, before his eligibility expires, because he just wants to be part of the team, to run out onto the field with his dad in the stands for his first time at a game in person. To make his dad proud. Everyone always doubts him as he is shorter than everyone else.

the true story of Rudy is that he was also a huge ... not nice person

@this.is.a.username I've never met him myself. my only context is the movie which is obviously going to take liberties with reality to tell a story. but my parents were at the final game in the movie.

@@13Nagash13 i gotcha. i'm just going off of the public comments made by people that went to ND with him at that time. 'based on a true story' isn't always 100% accurate, just like Patch Adams and Fly Away Home

Rudy is about a guy who was passionate about playing football for Notre Dame despite his lack of talent.

Oooooooh, your comments about Birgitte make me intrigued on your full opinion on her. And you make a good point too! Any chance the WOT Character Deep Dives might return sometime, if you’re ever down?

I choose to read Valan Luca and Nynaeve’s dynamic a little differently. I think your interpretation is valid too ofc. But when I read it, esp in Nynaeve’s POV, I think she was accidentally flirting (something I’ve done in my own life) and that she did think he was hot. In my interpretation, Luca is getting mixed signals and pursuing someone he has reason to believe is intentionally playing hard to get. I think that’s what RJ was trying to write, but just suffering from Man writing Women in the Nineties syndrome.
@donalocribin33552 күн бұрын
I can understand that interpretation, but I think I side more with Lezbi here, partially because the whole concept of playing hard to get makes no sense to me. If I like someone, I am usually too nervous to say it outright, but I'm not going to lie and try to make it awkward. I don't have the temperament for playing games with this kind of thing, bluntness suits me much better. It also doesn't help that my default is to assume people aren't interested until they show a sign otherwise

I absolutely swear I heard Shohreh Aghashloo was playing Elaida *months* ago one of WoT news channels. (Don’t remember which by name. Bald, white, Canadian gentleman.) And, I seem to recall way back when the fan casting first got Shohreh’s interest, Rafe said he had someone other than Cadsuane in mind for her to play. As for Elaida being an interesting, complex character… guess we’ll see. (Why, yes, she *is* one of my most hated characters from the books. Why do you ask?)

Valan Luca is definitely weird and creepy. I still don't understand why you hate Tallanvor so much. I can't think of anyone else even mentioning it before.
@kellyranger2 күн бұрын
Lol. I actually read Luca differently. I think this is a Nyn POV problem. She yells "I'm not yelling". I think she may actually be sending mixed signals. I'm not saying it's a good healthy dynamic. Or that it isn't colored by RJ writing a woman from a man's perspective. But nynaeve's own P.O.V. reflects that she actually enjoys that Lan pursued her even harder. It's not my preference for interaction either. But it seems to be her kink. So I think the character of Luca recieves some grace in that situation from my interpretation. I can fully imagine a situation where she is leaning in talking to Luca and then backing away, not so far away that she is making it actually clear she wants him to eff off, but instead a midway distance where she is almost challenging him to display his desire even more blatantly each time. As if she is seeking a grandiose display. Like the one she received from Lan. Tallanvor. I get the loathing. He is so cringe. He's constantly giving ultimatums. He's clingy. He just kind of expects that doing his job of protecting his queen, should be enough for her to love him. He!s awful.
@this.is.a.username2 күн бұрын
Lini helped raise her, i doubt she would take Tallanvor's side in that if she thought Morgase felt nothing for Tallanvor. It's RJ being RJ. instead of just letting Morgase decide men have been bad for her for years, and she should take time to herself his/"her" thought process was "Thom, Gareth, and Gaebril all betrayed me, but Tallanvor swore blood oath to protect me and has stayed even now that I'm no longer queen... maybe he deserves my love back." I can see the cringe factor, especially from younger readers, he's basically love bombing her.
