Get a knox armored shirt, the urban pro is AA and the honister is AAA rated. They are fully vented, offer slide and impact protection and really easy to add warmth or rain layers. For knee protection as a old man with bad knees the leatt z-frame is amazing, but the c-frames offer better feel as the brace is mostly on the outside of the leg, they are a bit more comfortable imo.

When I was first learning to ride my euc I hit my ankle too many times to count. I couldn't believe that out of all the safety gear and instructional videos/tutorials not 1 mentioned a solution. I can't speak highly enough about the ankle braces that you quickly touched on at the very end. These things provided me with instant relief and protection. They also provided more strength that I didn't know I would benefit from at the time as my muscles were developing.

Can't count how many times i've fallen during offroad / jumping / race track / pump track, these are places where you must think more of "when" rather than "if". Every tip Adam gave in the vid is totally true, i could add from myself - i prefer hard plastic protectors because they slide longer on any surface, dissipating friction energy over a longer distance and tend to stay more in place. From the other hand i've literally never had crash with the car/bicycle/pedestrian, while riding around the city - imagination and situation awareness is the greatest protector. Though it's worth to remember wheel can fail itself (ekhm inmotion V12...) So many stories of people who fallen on back of their head because that shit self accelerated. 🙉

A good helmet can make a big difference even in lower speed crashes. I wanted to mention that the tsg pass is a very bad helmet for protection against concussions. I had a low-speed cutout on my Veteran Sherman (eventually figured out they had left a razor blade under the heat sync during manufacturing that apparently was interfering with heat dissipation and lead to a MOSFET meltdown). I was maybe doing 30 kph on a dirt road. I was fully kitted up with a DOT motorcycle helmet, motorcycle jacket with level 2 back/shoulder/elbow 3do pads, wrist guards, and Leatt knee/shin guards, but still ended up with a mild concussion and a radial head fracture near my elbow that has left me permanently unable to straighten the arm. I'm very fit (long distance cyclist) and was really geared up and going fairly slow on a softer surface, but I still was injured. I would say the following based on this experience: - cutouts are incredibly fast and you will face plant - I assume I stuck one wrist out as the wrist guard on one side was shattered. I think it transmitted the force up to my elbow, but likely saved my wrist. I consider wrist protection mandatory now. - even with my DOT motorcycle helmet on (certified for high speed highway riding), I still sustained a light concussion. I think this might have been due to the fact that the helmet had one of those offroad visors on it and when I hit it snapped my neck back due to the extra resistance. A smooth helmet front would not have done this. For this reason, I STRONGLY recommend removing those visors. When you think about how you go down during a faceplant, it's pretty obvious that extra flap of plastic sticking out will cause the helmet to rotate backward with force before that plastic finally gives way. The helmet I was wearing actually specified that you must remove that piece while using it for highway riding (I assumed for air resistance, but not I think for this reason as well).
@SkeptikosUTube3 ай бұрын
Dang, terrible luck with the elbow. The level 2 D3O pads should be pretty good and usually prevent that (as long as it's not Amazon knockoff stuff). It's pretty normal to get a concussion when you have a hard head impact, even with a motorcycle helmet. All the testing is focused on severe head injuries rather than mild concussions. So you were probably saved from something much worse. If you get a helmet with MIPS or something similar, that can prevent more concussions

For me personally, I will put on wrists guards for a short ride before I put on a helmet. In the end both are important. But when we fall it's natural instinct to protect the head, and we do that by using our hands to control the fall. And even in a simple slip when you fall on your butt you can end up breaking your wrist where your head wasn't even at risk. TLDR: I feel wrist guards should be considered just as necessary as a helmet.

Regarding helmet styles: low speed pedal clips tend to twist you around so you are likely to land on your shoulder. The wobbles also twist you around, but a face plant is still possible. However, a cutout will dump you with a very high probability of a face plant. Chin protection is a real hard choice. It is possible to protect your chin while getting garroted with your neck strap. Think about this: If you fall on your chin, and a protruding chin protector keeps the pavement away from your chin, where does the energy get transferred to that protected your chin? A neck strap that includes a chin cup can keep the pavement rash away at the cost of a broken jaw. If the energy gets transferred to the neck strap then you could crush the trachea and strangle yourself in a crash. You can recover from a broken jaw, but not a funeral. A full body suit, motorcycle style, is called a bone bag. I met a rider in the hospital who was in traction, he griped to the doctor that the bone bag didn't do him a lot of good with his broken bones. The doctor said, "Are you kidding? You are not looking at six months of skin grafts." Six weeks for fractures, six months for skin graphs, something to think about, especially with the need for income. Protection has limits, but no protection is foolish.

They're not perfect, but they've held up pretty well in falls. While I'm interested in switching to something that will stay in place better I'm hesitant if it means losing multi-crash durability, or not sliding and having my foot get bound up in a crash, or having more impact force transferred.

hey bro I'm wondering if you may be able to talk about knee pain or knee strain? I'm just starting out learning EUC. I have 100 km on my begode falcon. I can mount/dismount from both legs pretty well now, make tight turns in all directions basically. I started trying to learn how to pendulum and ride backwards (that part's not going to well. will take some time). I'm focusing on all the maneuvers that should become second nature so I can ride safely in the city. after the first few sessions, I started getting pretty considerable knee pain primarily in the outside, lower sort of "divot" in the knee below and to the outside of the knee cap. I believe it's strain on the tendons or ligaments, not my leg muscles. I can ice it a few times a day and it will reduce the pain the next day. but when I get back on my wheel to start practicing again, I will get the knee pain again within around a half an hour of riding. if I just keep pushing through it the pain will intensify and I will have to take several days off from riding to recover. did you experience this pain when you started riding? how did you overcome it? love your videos and thanks as always!!
@ThomiX0.03 ай бұрын
I understand these issues, as being beginners pains, that is why a have wheel in the first riding efforts, do harm your body which is not used to these forces. It isn't just the weight of the wheel, which should not exceed halve of your bodyweight, but also the weight distribution of the wheel you use. See, the higher the weight is situated, the more weight will push against the knee joint, specifically at lowspeed manoeuvring. I had the same issues with a 35kg wheel and 60kg body.. So, my practicing is most of the time 'go straight forward and become precise in aiming the spot I want to ride, and after an hour I do some slow turns etc. All in not overdue the stress barrier, the pain you described is gone. You will get there anyway, do not worry, time is our play. Exercise your knee muscles and movements by slowly bend your knees and not drop yourself in a couch as usual is just one of the things which will help, and you know much more of these, they will help. Enjoy the ride anyway, good luck :-)

@@ThomiX0.0 thanks today I removed the small plate used to adjust the pedal angle on the begode falcon. the plate was installed with it set to the lowest pedal angle, but if you remove it completely the pedals will be a few degrees flatter. I rode for a couple of hours today practicing trying to ride backwards and the knee pain was substantially less than before. I can also ride much better now generally speaking. I don't have nearly as much trouble getting on and off the wheel as I did before. I fell off the first time mounting because I was used to how tilted the pedals were but after that it felt much better and I seemed to be able to control the wheel a lot better. so it seems like too steep of a pedal angle was causing some extra strain on my knees. i feel like the pedals on the falcon are already so high up that they don't really need to be angled so sharply. I can still turn very sharply with them as they are now.

You don't need a heavier motorcycle helmet for faster speed only a DH rated bike helmet for a strong chin bar, the speed rating for motorcycle helmets is misleading because they're only drop tested from 10 feet, you won't survive an impact in a motorcycle helmet that you wouldn't in a DH rated helmet. Some of the requirements for motorcycle helmets are arbitrary like 1" of styrofoam, and there's the abrasion aspect that doesn't come into play on a 60 mph EUC crash
@SkeptikosUTube3 ай бұрын
You definitely still need more research, lots of wrong/confused facts there. Motorcycle helmets have higher (substantially higher) impact requirements than the DH helmets, so they really are safer. The 10ft thing isn't meant to equal riding speed, it's the speed of your head impact, which is usually slower. But you're partly right, if you ride head first into a brick wall there's a good chance you'll die in any helmet.
@-JohnSmith-2 ай бұрын
@@SkeptikosUTube the g forces sustained in a 10 ft drop in a motorcycle helmet test can't exceed a certain limit, DH helmets are tested from I believe 6.5 feet and can't exceed a certain g forces, a helmet has to deform more on a lower speed crash than a higher speed crash so if it passes the lower speed test as long as it doesn't completely break apart on multiple hits it will protect you in the 10-foot drop as well, also if you fall backwards on a lower speed crash it's easier to keep your head from even hitting the ground in a 1.8 pound helmet vs. a 4.5 pound motorcycle one
@SkeptikosUTube2 ай бұрын
@@-JohnSmith- Seriously though, you should do more research and double check yourself. For example, motorcycle helmets are not 4.5 lbs. (But some of your other facts sound more correct.) It doesn't make sense that helmets tested for lower drops will work for higher drops-- and when there are multiple test drops, the drops are usually done on different parts of the helmet. So it's not the same as one big drop. You've got some things right, but your overall batting average is not high. Helmets are a complicated topic and you don't want make decisions based on half-informed theorizing about them.
@-JohnSmith-2 ай бұрын
@@SkeptikosUTube helmets reduced g forces to the brain by absorbing impact they absorb impact by the shell flexing the liner crushing or the exterior cracking and breaking in the case of bike helmets. A stiffer more rigid helmet will not flex or break in a lower speed crash so the energy is transmitted to the brain, that same helmet in a higher speed impact will compress or flex which results in fewer g-forces to the brain in a higher speed impact. Think of breaking boards like in karate demonstrations, the board has to break so the energy isn't transmitted into your hands so hitting it faster and it breaking is safer, if the wood is less rigid and thinner you can hit at a lower speed and it will break absorbing the impact, hitting at that same slower speed on the thicker more ridgid board results in more energy transferred because it doesn't break absorbing the energy.

What do you do for the cold? Anything above about 20mph and my eyes really sting! Do you need a enclosed visor or any kind of visor?

Either a visor or goggles/sports glasses

if you have a head crash with a MTB helmet vs a motorbike one U will know that U shouldn't use a MTB helmet anymore anytime ever. cheap Chinese motocross helmets are half the price and double the protection
