WHEEL THEFT PREVENTION TIPS | My Factory 20's were STOLEN!

Not long ago, the factory 20" wheels on my 2014 GMC Sierra were stolen off of my truck in front of my house. The thieves set the truck back down on the street resting on the rear brake rotors and front ball joints.
Fortunately, my insurance covered the entire loss. I replaced the factory 20" wheels with a set of 22" wheels from the GM Performance catalog. These are basically the 22" Denali wheels. But instead of chrome inserts, they have black painted inserts.
In this video I show a few of the steps I am taking to prevent theft of my wheels in the future. I purchased a set of Gorilla Guard wheel locks. Then I also show you my little trick of stamping the wheels with some kind of identifying mark. This could help to recover the rims in case they do get stolen in the future.

One of my friends has a mustang and he put Shelby wheels on it. He put 3 wheel locks on each wheel . I think at that point they'll just steal the whole car. 😂

I had an 88 IROC that I bought slightly used years ago and it had the wheel locks, but get this - all 20 lug nuts used the key. So a thief would have to drive a socket into each lug nut 20 times! I don't know how or where the original owner got them, but it was effective.

jewllake lol a thief can defeat it easily, lock nuts won't do shit. If the thieve wants it bad enough, the will get it. Not to mention, unless you do all maintenance work yourself, it will be a pain in the ass and a risk because the mechanicc may fuck up your wheels even if you give them your key. It has happened to many people.

very good idea with stamping the wheels, I have a nice set of brand new cragar ss wheels on my suburban and I will use your method on mine as well. I have been worried about mine being stolen since I bought them, you cant have anything nice these days without worrying about it, it seems. I do have a suggestion though, you should put jack stands to support your truck and take the weight off of the pump jack. it not only keeps you safer but it keeps the jack from failing and being damaged as well as the truck when it hits the ground. I only say this because I had a hydraulic seal fail and my jack started to leak down. luckily it dropped down slowly enough for me to get out of the way, but they can completely blow out and drop all at once. I know you only had the truck up on the jack for a short period of time, but believe me it could happen. I'm not a youtuber know it all who shuns people in the comment section, so I just occasionally give advise on things I have personally dealt with before. just advise. thanks again for the great idea, its a lot of work taking the wheels off and putting them back on but its totally worth it to protect property.

Great ideas on wheel theft protection, especially the stamping of a personal ID#. I'm an electrician and use zip ties all the time and just a friendly helpful tip about the zip ties is if they are subjected to winter cold and then the heat of engine compartments or exhaust systems they can get very brittle! I would suggest some sort of thin metal cable about 1/8" thick with a clamped loop on both ends you can put a small lock on then tape over the keyhole with electrical tape then use a hot-glue gun to seal the keyhole end shut to protect it from grime, but don't forget the tape or you may clog the keyhole. When needed the hot glue and electrical tape should be fairly easy to remove. Also just in case the wheel locks only came with one key you might check with the manufacturer to see if you can get a spare going off the serial # if it has one. The last thing you want is to get a flat tire somewhere and find that the key you've hidden on or in your vehicle has been broken loose and lost. If so you might find yourself with a nasty towing bill and have to pay to have the lock chiseled off and you'll end up with one unprotected wheel, the other three locks will eventually also have to be chiseled off as you no longer have the key, and you've gotta buy a new set of locks. Unfortunately, I speak from experience on that one. Obviously "The Club" for your steering wheel is good to, but in the past I've also hidden a small 1/4" microswitch somewhere inside the vehicle that interrupts the ignition signal so unless someone knows where it is they cant start the vehicle, a little harder on newer cars but I'm sure a mechanic can help to find the right wire if necessary, but install the switch yourself. When I did this it had become such a natural instinctive and smooth movement whenever I got in or out that when I dropped my vehicle off to be worked on I hit the switch and left. they couldn't start my vehicle. Good luck to you and your viewers. P.S. Don't forget that unfortunately, if a clever thief wants what you've got they will, one way or another, figure out a way to get it so all we honest people can do is protect ourselves and our belongings in as many clever ways as possible to frustrate or detour the thieves!

One thing I would add is don’t have any regular lug nuts on your car, have the rest be maybe a cheaper kind of wheel lock, that way it’ll take forever for a thief to get the wheels off. Also if you’re going to bother torquing your lug nuts you might as well do it right. It’ll look something like this. 1 3 6 5 4 2

When i was younger and hanging out with people i should not have been hanging out with, I met two career criminals who... Basically they were trying to teach me how to break into houses (got me 6 months in juvi for it too) 1. Find a house near you. Somewhere you can get to quickly, leave even quicker. And you can keep tabs on. 2: Scout the house, learn how many people live there, their routine, when they leave go to work, get back, go to gym in the mornings ect. 3. Find a way in (self explanatory) 4. Find key items right away and get out. Laptop, watches, phones ect. Easy to grab, and leave. Dont take a lot of time, you should be in and out in less then 15 minutes. There was a lot more but honestly i don't want to put a full layout on how to rob someone on here for good reason, but moral of the story, if you don't wanna get robbed. 1. Buy a dog 2. Security system 3. Get to know your neighbors

When they got inside that rental garage they took wheels, seats and radio again. Then he parked it at my place here on the farm and baseball size hail from God himself got it next. Growing up in Detroit I've seen it many times. one thing is keep things well lit up at night. A thief loves the dark. If the area has bright lights they're more likely to stay away ' they don't want to be seen' . Also camera , at least that way you can catch them on film. Many will just take the entire vehicle & remove wheels somewhere else. I even knew a guy who would attach fishing line to his bike leading to a small bell in his room. if someone tried to steal it the bell would jingle. As for tires always have an alarm.

I looked into this problem recently due to multiple wheels theft around my area. Basically I wanted to create and app that is driven by the cars alarm to alert you the wheels have been separated from the vehicle, basically every vehicle alarm only goes off under motion or if a door or hood/trunk has been opened. My idea is to have the wheel connected to a probe that sets off car's audible alarm and also warnings on your smart phone, upon separation from voltage source. I had even incorporated a GPS module inside the tire, just like a TPMS, to alert you of the location of the wheels upon the theft. After looking into a patent I realized someone had beat me to it by a matter of months! Bummer, but I am glad someone has finally gotten serious about this problem. Look into it, research it and you will find that it is very preventable if proper equipment is present before the theft happens.

your wheels are matched to your truck. the valve stem system has a numeric code which pairs to your truck....you can find them by going to your dealer and getting the code for the wheels. See mike davenport video on when they stole his 2107 redline wheels. You can still identify which ones are yours being sold on craigslist. All you have to do is get the police involved and the dealership because your air pressure sensors are built into the rims and it has a special code that matches your Vin number. You can use a Wi-Fi system that can scan and check if the craigslist seller has your wheels or not.

@Toker Pak it's not WiFi. WiFi is 2.4ghz. TPMS is a different Unlicensed ISM band... 315mhz in North America and 434mhz in Europe. You are correct in that they can be read with a wireless TPMS tool and they have unique serial numbers. He could've snagged the TPMS sensor Ident Strings from the control module that handles TPMS on his truck before he overwrote them with the new wheel Ident strings. On the GMT800 & GMT900 TPMS is in the RKE module. Not sure where it lives on the GMK2XX chassis trucks but any decent scan tool should be able to liberate all five TPMS Ident strings. Once you have all five you can read the spare wheel sensor and eliminate that one from your BOLO. The first thing I would've done is to read the TPMS Ident strings for the stolen wheels and post them on the STOLEN thread or sub-forum on several GM tyruck forums that I frequent.
@TokerPack
@TokerPack 6 жыл бұрын
TheOcculus I forgot I left that comment and when I think about it now I have no idea why I said Wi-Fi. Maybe I meant to say ID system or something. I use voice to text so it jacks up sometimes. But yes there is special scanners made for that reason and they can definitely use them to find out if they are his rims or not. Also you don’t technically have to scan for your original rims code 1st because the dealership will have that data on file if not the manufacturer will and all they need is the Vin to find out the original IDs.

Used to be a auto mechanic before changing professions, I used to bust of wheel locks all the time. So many lost their keys, or didn't have the key with them. I had a number of ways to get locks of, and some of them you would think would be the hardest, were the easiest to get off. I've pulled off just about any style you can think of. Some locks are so simple, it didn't slow me up much from a normal lug. Hand torqing your wheels down is always best. Request they do that if you have someone else touch your wheels. Use 2 completely different sets of wheel locks!. Different brands. That twisty thing in the lock wouldn't slow me down much. 2 completely different sets will slow the people trying to steel them even more. A security camera pointed at the location of your car/truck also good. But it needs to be a good one. A crappy recording doesn't do you or the police any good.

Thieves will take "it" if they want it bad enough. In your case, the worst was to drop your truck on the ground like they did. Ug! Well, as you probably knew, many times thieves steal things the first time is so they can come back for the new on the 2nd time knowing most owners will have to replace them. Having insurance is one thing ( but you have to go through all the hassle and you future rate will increase...), may be better to invest in a GPS based protection system (including sensors to your individual tires/spare, muffler and etc), you will be notified as anything moves or triggered by vibration and so on depends on your settings... You can find many of this type of device on the Internet. BTW, you may also consider adding a camera (with motion session) from inside your house to watch the truck 24x7 if needed. Good Luck!

I wonder if someone could write a Bluetooth app for your phone which would keep tabs on if the TPMS sensors were unloaded. (Meaning that the wheel was just removed or tilted) and then alert you. Also, because these sensors are wireless, could the police carry a similar app for their phones to scan a suspect garage or service depot etc?

TPMS sensors use a different frequency than bluetooth and the range has to be super close if you wanted to read a sensor directly. If you put a more powerful transmitter in to help locate them, then you'd need to supply more power. Not impossible, but a cool challenge to design..

If you have a TPMS on those tires and you have an idea or where they might be, the TPMS is codes on the vehicle for the truck, so if you come across a listing for those wheels or a vehicle which has wheels similar to the ones which were stolen from your vehicle, there is a computer you can contact a dealership and have them help you, you can actually prove those tires are for your vehicle, I have seen it done here on youTube. I am not exactly sure what all it requires, but I have seen it done. Actually there is a video somewhere let me see if I can find that link for you.

I have found out over time plastic stays deterriorate! In are out of the sun, cold and heat breaks them down as well.They become brittle and easily break. I would use a galvanized piece of wire. One can make a small circle with a short piece of wire. You can bend each end of the wire and make a small hook on each end. With tension between them they will hook together securely! You still can use the plastic stay and you will have two chances to keep your lug nut key safe and sound! If you have a flat/blow out on the side of the road, you want to be darn sure you can find your lug nut key where you hid it!

correct, brute force then twist, these wheel "locks" are not going to stop any thief that wants those wheels for drug money, all wheel locks are actually good for is pissing off mechanics/tyre shops when the owner loses the "key" and needs the wheels off........... same process every time no matter the type of lock..... smash smash smash then twist ;) also in case people don't realise, all of these wheel locks have the same HUGE flaw.... there are only a handful of "keys" no matter what the manufacturer claims, buy or steal a handful of "keys" and you have yourself a set of "steal any wheels you like keys". The one saving grace of wheel locks, is that they slow the thief down and make the process noisy, unless they have a few "keys" on them ready to go :P

very sorry to hear about your loss. i just saved up every penny i could for 3+ months to buy new wheels and tires for my truck. so worried about putting them on my truck as the wife's car is the owner of our garage. i totally love your idea of the stamping! there are already random codes stamped in seemingly random places around the wheels and i wouldn't pay any attention to them if i saw them. i only wonder though, if you saw them on craigslist and went to take a look at them, how would you go about getting them back? i think it could be very dangerous to confront them, nobody enjoys going to jail for grand theft. well, cross that bridge.... but i really love the idea so much! i saw the stamp sets are only $10-25 at HFT. i will definitely be buying some and mark them before i mount them on the truck. really thank you so much for the tip. at least its a last chance to be able to get them back and the responsible party to enjoy their karma behind bars. and as to hiding the key, i cant agree with you more. i watch all of these videos and every previous video says throw your key in the glove box. ok, im a thief, where will i look? haha. one more thing i would like to add is that you can get a full set (not just one per wheel) of splined lug nuts. yeah you can pound a socket on them and get them off. but if you are pounding sockets on 26 times! HOPEFULLY someone will hear. but hopefully it will change someone's mind when they just see them. i will use 5 splined and one of the locking lugs per wheel just to make them change tools to slow them down a little. yes, if they want them bad enough they will still get them. but thats where the markings give you one last chance to get them back. you are my favorite person of at least today. much love brother !!

One way you can identify stolen wheel is with tpms. If you bring the wheels near the car the truck will notice and the tire pressure dash light will go off. Another way is also with the TPMS but you can have someone from the dealer come to your house and they can get the serial number from your TPMS from your truck and then they do the same with the wheels and then if they match up, they’re obviously your wheels.

A stamp on the front would take longer to remove leaving no trace as it requires a milling machine (preferably a C.N.C. The guy in the vid got his insur claim paid, net of the deductible, and then bought tires that were 1/2 the price of the stolen ones so he wasn't out of pocket any money.

You should replace some of the studs with left handed studs

Amazing idea as long as the studs don’t just break off.

It’s way faster to snap a stud than wind off a lug

Derek Stone you won’t be able to snap them. They would probably destroy the threads but that makes it even harder to take off.

9914life I work in the automotive industry. Trust me it’s really easy to break a stud. It only takes about 120 foot pounds to break a 12mm stud. We get vehicles in all the time with cross threaded lugs so we just snap them off and replace

Derek Stone I work on heavy duty trucks all the time and I’ve probably stripped hundreds of nuts with impact guns but I’ve stripped the stud.

How would the thief take off the wheel locks? Don’t they come factory on cars/ trucks? Also where were u to not see the thief take out a jack stand and undo the wheels and move around the entire truck, also wouldn’t u hear the power wrench or whatever that tool is called again?

You dont have to use a big jack like that, & can use a breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts and a cordless impact to remove them quickly. I’m sure a guy or two can get them off in 5-10 minutes no problem. Also some offroad jacks have offroad wheels that are quiet

The issue is many theives have the "keys" already so that doesn't detour them. The best thing to do if you have expensive wheels that you dont want stolen is get an alarm with a tilt sensor that will activated if the vehicle is jostled or jacked up when alarm is engaged.

I have used fish hooks and razor blades to deter a thief. I found blood too.
