In today’s video, I’m sharing my wheelchair accessible kitchen ideas, featuring home modifications and accessible kitchen for spinal cord injury patients. In terms of design and functionality, wheelchair accessible kitchens are for people with mobility challenges so they can use the kitchen in not just a normal way, but also focusing on safety and comfort as well. For example, a 36" doorway can accommodate most wheelchairs, but 42" is a lot more comfortable. Lever door handles vs. traditional knobs also make doors a lot easier to manage. There are lots of reasons that people in wheelchairs experience challenges when trying to navigate the kitchen. But, there are many ways that kitchens can be modified to make them more user-friendly for people in wheelchairs and otherwise physically challenged individuals. Some of these modifications include cabinet and countertop height, electrical systems placement, appliance positioning, food storage, and sink placement. If you enjoyed my wheelchair accessible kitchen ideas, featuring home modifications and accessible kitchen for spinal cord injury patients, please remember to like, share, subscribe, and leave a comment if you have any questions or feedback. I hope to see you here again soon!

Thank you. Your mashed taters looked delicious! I have multiple sclerosis and my husband and I are starting plans to remodel our home kitchen. I am planning for future challenges. We are both 66 years old and want to be able to enjoy preparing awesome meals like yours!

Thanks! That means a lot! I've had an SCI since I was 11 and didn't really start making my own meals well into my late 20s! I'd always depended on family or roomates or take-out. It's so empowering to choose what I want to eat, and make it my own way, even if it's something as simple as tater's! Having an ACCESSIBLE kitchen is really a game-changer. My dad always said that in life the job is always easier when you have the right tools! so as wheelchair users, to have an accessible kitchen, with everything barrier-free and reachable, it gives you the ability to access the tools you need to suceed

Thank you for the tips 🥰 I'm not full time wheelchair yet but not far from it and have to start to adjust my kitchen since I cannot handle to stand while cooking anymore. I absolutely get your point with all the cutting, chopping, squeezing vs. chronic pains 🤦 I always did everything by hand (and still do whenever possible) because I believe that the food is better if you put your energy and love into it but a few months ago I had to buy a food processor and have to use it often. I wish you all the best 🍀❤️

thanks for the kind words, Katerina! oh boy, it's nice to talk to someone who knows what it's like to deal with chronic pains :P and I 100% agree, it's strange, but food rally does taste better when its made with care and love. -- Oda

@@CortreeTV Hello Oda and thanks for your message 🫂 it's hard for other people to understand what we're going through. I'll never be able to count all the ex-friends/schoolmates/bosses/colleagues/teachers/partners who simply thought that either I'm a lier or hypochondriac or hysterical etc. and it became toxic for me to keep them any longer in my life. On one hand I'm happy that they don't go through the same therefore lack the empathy, on the other hand I find it sad that we have so little understanding in the world. How are you doing these days? ❤️🌻

@@MyNewEra2012 thanks for sharing :)... I tend to try to focus on the positive things and the things I can change. I like to surround myself with like minded people with whom I can just BE without judgement or undue criticism. I feel that's pretty much all I CAN do! haha. if you ever want to reach out, or if you have any video ideas or topics you think we should cover, feel free to email us at info@sciontario.org thanks for watching, Katerina! -- Oda

I can't quite remember where I got that specific blender, but I've since replaced it, just google or amazon "hand blender" and you'll find some cheap and viable options! thanks for the kind words, please let me know how you like it! -- Oda
