The airlines can lie to you and say it's about safety all they want; we all know it's really about greed and money. Having space on planes for wheelchairs that might not always be filled would mean fewer seats that would likely always be full. I'm sure the idea of not having every possible square inch of every plane crammed full of paying customers at all times gives the greedy folks at the top of the corporate chain severe heartburn. Like everything else, I'm sure it all comes down to money money money. Such a shame, and so unacceptable that it means disabled people can't go wherever they want and need to go.
@i.am.mindblind4 жыл бұрын
They could have regular seats that could be designed to clip into place if no wheelchairs were on the flight. Minivans have removable seats, it can be done. Plus if airlines allowed wheelchairs on planes more disabled people would fly and I bet there would rarely be an empty wheelchair spot.

Katie Marsh Not really. If there would be more disabled people than „normal“ people it would be the other way around. And then the „normal“ people would complain. Great to see light being shed on this topic! I am a C5 quadriplegic. In the last year I have flown seven times. None of which have been a smooth or easy process. The worst situation took place following a crash landing onto the runway. Resulting in significant damage to the plane and requiring immediate evacuation. The airline had absolutely zero preparedness for getting me off the plane. I was asked several times “can you take just a few steps“. Once I was off my wheelchair was not accessible until late late later. The complete lack of preparedness for someone of my situation continued. They tried to put me in an aisle chair which I refused. My best option eventually was a general discharge from the hospital after a knee surgery wheelchair. Important medical equipment for my evening and morning routine’s remained on the plane until afternoon the following day which created in myriad of problems. All along I was assured and reassured everything would be returned to me shortly. As the day progressed into the evening and it was evident the airline had no plan for me paired with escalating pain due to inadequate seating I was taken to the ER. All of this took us back to the drawing board to rethink how we should better prepare ourselves for these situations. However, it takes two....Airlines badly need to improve their accommodations for our population

That must have been so frustrating. Liz has the patience of a saint. I'm afraid I wouldn't have been able to keep it in as well as she did. They are going to start letting miniature therapy horses on planes, but not wheelchairs for the disabled. Makes no sense. Petition signed and shared this video to my FB page.
@jennhoff035 жыл бұрын
Therapy horses?!?! Gaa! I miss traveling so much. I have a condition called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, which is basically extreme allergies. When they started allowing pets on planes, I started going into anaphylactic shock more and more often when I'd fly. And they make me- who has absolutely no say in my condition- wait around for another flight rather than the person choosing to bring a pet. There is no person on this earth who is well enough to fly but not well enough to be separated from their miniature horse for an hour.

@jennhoff033 жыл бұрын
@@xx-yd5mm I'm not saying it's not a service animal. I just think it's not fair that I get booted from a flight when I was born with Mast Cell. I have zero choice or say in it. But people have a choice to fly with or without a horse.
@xx-yd5mm3 жыл бұрын
@@jennhoff03 People don't have a choice when they are born disabled or have a terrible accident but here we are. Then another nurse from the company insisted on coming out & measuring my legs as they thought I couldn't possibly have a 38" inside leg with UK size 11 feet (12 us)... @@NotAnotherKuromi for my dads pressure stockings he needed a different size for each leg and the "off the shelf" ones that the insurance covered didn't fit properly. The Air Carriers Access Act only applies to US airlines and any foreign airline that has flights to or from the US. If KLM never touches the US, then the ACAA doesn't come into play. It is indeed sad that wheelers are excluded in the EU. But until they also have their own ACAA, there's not much USAers can do except be squeaky wheels who speak only in terms of money. A Google search shows that the airline DOES have flights into the US so they should have to comply with the law. Doesn't mean they will. Could also mean that they only use the bigger, more "accessible" planes for those flights. Their smaller planes would not apply. I think. Regardless, major PITA.

Far too often accessibility is more of a concept than a reality. Your advocacy makes a difference, thanks!

Liz has way more patience than I do. I hate being put on hold and I've scaled a phone across the room on a few occasions. The petition has been signed and this has been shared.

Great video! Keep bringing these vital issues up. Only when we ALL speak up and insist on fair accommodations will things change. And, we all win when this happens. Love to you both.

Hey guys. I discovered your channel during social distancing and I am hooked. I heard Shane mention KLM and it brought back memories. I am a paraplegic. 25 years ago I went on a trip to India with my family. Got to India fine. Managed to get around India. Got on the plane to come back to Canada and KLM did not put my chair on the plane. They kept my chair. I haven't gone on an International trip since.

I was saddened by the title of this video. I’m sorry that you went through this. The Air Carrier Access Act: I thought this is a US only law?
@rhino18765 жыл бұрын
Tieia Middleton it is only a US law. Even if it was in place they would have had this issue regardless.
@rainbowzebra16045 жыл бұрын
The Air Carrier Access Act only applies to any leg of your trip that is within the US, departing from the US or arriving to the US. It is very frustrating I know. As an American expat living in Germany I can say that there is nothing as good as the American's with Disabilities Act here in the EU. I've heard the UK isn't too bad, but here in Germany it was hard for me to find doctors whose offices are accessible. Personally I only take trains within Europe, because I can stay in my chair. I am sorry Shane and Hannah for how difficult this was, but unfortunately it doesn't violate any European laws. I agree that the law should change.

I’ve found that Europe definitely doesn’t have laws to help handicapped people- there is no guarantee- I’ve traveled with handicapped relatives and it can be a nightmare!

I can't believe this nightmare exists in 2019! The airlines won't allow people to stay in their wheelchairs because they'd have to get rid of a seat or two to accommodate a chair, and they aren't willing to give up the few dollars they might lose when there isn't a wheelchair on board :/ Liz is amazing!
@sexyangel0725 жыл бұрын
ANTieT more than a seat or two, if they have multiple people that need space for wheel chairs. As the demand would be higher than the supply

If my 2014 minivan can make four built in car seats disappear in hidden under feet compartments with the expertise of none other than a chunky 36 year old housewife(me). Then a high tech plane company can figure something out too. They just don't want to. No wasting money on seats that have to be permanently removed causing loss of revenue. And no wasted space for when there is not a need for a wheelchair spot. And before I had a 2014 minivan I had a 1998 minivan where the whole back row unlocked and could be removed from the entire car. It was heavy as crap, but removable and returnable without damage or safety issues. So if Dodge can figure it out so can Boeing.

Joni Thompson yea my dads van has seats where you flick a lever and they lift out. Leaving a flat floor (except some recessed connectors- which wouldn’t interfere with a chair.) 🙄 it’s so possible- just not wanted by these corporations.

You are blessed to have Liz. My philosophy is that I must fight for things because others can’t fight. Thanks for sharing. At my weight it is hard to get out of the airline seat. The arms don’t move or I could at least roll onto the floor. Airlines also can’t deal with my diet.

“Customer care, this is Jayden, how can I assist you this evening?” “Hi, I was calling to see what information you could give me on transporting a wheelchair for a disabled person in my party on an upcoming flight to Krakow. I’ve had to deal with loads of hassle with this issue before, and I know some planes have different sized cargo doors so I wanted to see what was the maximum size or weight limit for a passenger’s wheelchair?” “Well I’m glad you asked. Just to give you a heads up, there are a number of things you have to do, but I’m here to walk you through all the procedures and it’s really nothing too difficult, you just need to follow a simple series of steps, does that sound alright?” “Um ok, so where do I start?” “First, you must abandon all your worldly concerns and leave Earth’s gravity on a trajectory to Jupiter. There, you will be intercepted by a black monolith which will bend the fabric of spacetime, teleporting you to a cosmic realm of pure chaos, eldritch mysteries and dark energy which will irreversibly fracture your psyche and awaken the long-forbidden senses of the mind. You shall awaken in a room wherein you shall have to face your greatest foe of all: a living incarnation of your own frail mortality. Ye will be reborn as a star child and hurtled toward Earth, but an unfamiliar Earth from a sister dimension. This world will be a dark phantasia of horrific wonders and beautiful terrors, of dreaded monumental cities and tombs of Elder Gods buried betwixt the waters, but you mustn’t let yourself be led astray from your sacred quest. After 99 successive virginal and ascetic lifetimes of pure and noble deeds, you will at least be approached by The One Guardian of the Threshold and given a golden amulet. Finally, you must thrice perambulate the Aetherworld portal widdershins before a bridge troll will ask of you three riddles. Answer wisely, and the golden amulet will open, revealing the Vespertine Gem of the Undying. Cross the bridge, defeat the dragon inside the lair, rescue the crystal princess, and place the blood of the dragon and the holy Vespertine gem into the Chalice of Uhltroar. If the wraiths of the fallen kings of old deem ye worthy of spirit and of deed, then, and only then, may ye be granted the passage ye seek for your disabled party member and successfully arrive in Krakow without having to cancel your hotel reservations and other plans.” “….So he can’t just bring his own wheelchair onto the plane and sit in the goddamn thing? And....did you say widdershins?”

Shane/Hannah/Liz I love you guys and it kills me when something doesn’t go right when there should be problems and there is. All my life I’ve had either family or friends that have had disabilities from Muscular Dystrophy to Cerebral Palsy so having this connection to you guys is very Heartfelt! I advocate constantly for causes I feel should ALWAYS be WORTHY! GOD BLESS YOU ALL! Love you guys and never change!

How hard is it to strap a wheelchair IN a plane?? All they need is some space and boom. 😑
@amandalane49715 жыл бұрын
I know right?! Military planes transport freaking vehicles in the planes. Strapped and anchored of course. Ugh.
@eege7425 жыл бұрын
There is no space, not even for an average children's buggy. They would have to remove one row of seats for it. They could offer first class as hardly booked out. SWISS is good.

Military planes aren't loaded with people. Military planes house cargo and personal in the same space sometimes. The Military isn't subject to being sued non stop by every solider serving...

John Wick People aren’t often willing to accept that the world is not built for everyone, but yet the majority, which is more than reasonable and fair. Reality is harsh and this young man, Shane, needs to accept it. All this coming from a wheelchair bound paraplegic who also struggles with reality but it is what it is.
@BrookeKatherine.4 жыл бұрын
jeremy wells the thing is, the word CAN be built for everyone? Especially something as simple as wheelchairs. I’m a wheelchair and that seems like giving up to just completely throw out the idea of society accommodating people. Makes it sound like you get pushed around and bullied by people because they think it’s an inconvenience.

I signed the petition, wrote a narrative and then posted it on Twitter. My husband just recently died (July 26) and wasn’t able to return to his home in Kenya because of the same malarkey. His accident happened here in the States. It wasn’t fair that he wasn’t able to go back home to see family when his chair would have been safer than a airline seat. Great job advocating all of you!❤️
