This takes me back. Had a GT Turbo for a few years in the early 90's - cost me £1200 to insure! Got nicked (twice) from outside my bedroom window in Newcastle - even with an alarm and crook lock! Despite the reputation for reliability, mine never missed a beat, and I didn't treat it kindly - you could get the discs and the turbo to glow a dull red at the end of a spirited drive! Rear inside wheel would tuck up if you cornered a little enthusiastically with a good 'thump'. Makes me cry to know how little I let it go for to help fund my flying training - moved into a Dutton Phaeton for a couple of years for some super cheap motoring - a totally different beastie! Looks like it didn't last very long after I sold it - hasn't been seen since 1996! :(

Ahh I owned one in 1990 a stunning black one 1989F reg I adored it it was my 3rd car and one of my absolute favourites of 15 cars I've owned. It was brutally fast and a total thrill to drive every day. It cost £1,300 to insure for the year, I past my test at 21 and I was 23 when I bought it. Dad helped me out with the insurance but caught me with all four wheels airborne tanning it down the lane as I drove over the railway bridge, he was driving up the lane at the time. Ahh happy memories. Drove one few years back and was astounded how hard it was to park no power steering

I had one back in the day. It was a bit of fun, though it was about as reliable as a baby's bum, you knew it would poo itself, it was just a question of when. The hot starting problem was a regular thing and it was in and out of a local garage so often that the mechanic eventually became a friend. 😀 I was the second owner and it had 30,000 odd miles on it, but in my care it needed a clutch, a new turbo, the fan switch died among other niggles. I even scrapped an otherwise good one for spares, most of which I still have in my shed all these years later. Got rid of the car though. 😀 Funny, I did think they'd be worth more than they appear to be, especially when you see the rising prices of other cars from the era and later over the last two years.
@slasher98833 жыл бұрын
So a typical Renault then? Wouldn't say no to one though, great fun to drive by all accounts.
@MrGrentch3 жыл бұрын
@@slasher9883 Badly needed an LSD though. I found they could be lairy at the limit and gave little warning. Grip, grip, grip.... hedge. 😀 Pretty practical car though as the R5 platform was. Wouldn't like to have been in any sort of collision in one mind you.

@MrGrentch3 жыл бұрын
@@slasher9883 In my humble the Pug 205 was/is the better car. Peugeot were at the top of their game suspension ans dynamics wise back then. Less fragile too. Better seats in the Renault.
@slasher98833 жыл бұрын
@@MrGrentch The 205 was a hoot to drive and the engine quite punchy. Certainly lived up to its reputation dynamics wise but it was like driving a tin can and interior bits were always breaking/warping etc (I am in Australia, french plastics hate the sun here). Still I wish I held onto it! Renaults 5's never officially sold here so they are a rare beast and I have never have had a chance to drive one unfortunately.

@leneanderthalien2 жыл бұрын
