In this video you can see how I make the breech plug for the barrel. It will have a M14X1.5 mm thread. That will fit well to the .50 cal sooth bore barrel. The making of the raw part took some time. The badest part is the cutting of the thread, because it is a tough job.
so thanks for watching and dont forget to like and subscribe.

Nice work, you make it look so easy. But I know it's not. You use two of my favorite tool's hack saw and files. Can't wait to see more , take care.

Thanks Guy. Surely there will be more and a lot of filing and sawing is needed.......and maybe even more filing....

Great video You are quite the purist, I use a section of bolt and a slice of angle iron then weld them and fit to the barrel after tightening.

@@homemadehistory7537 Good for you and keep it up. Every time I make something from scratch I thank the ones who invented the tools I use. I am a millwright by trade and understand how difficult it is to hand cut round stock to the correct size and then thread it.

@@saxonforge Since nearly 31 years I build steel mills .... pipework and mechanik and I love it. what kind of mills are you building? grain , stone concrete? One time we build bearings for a concrete mill that was so interesting.

I just have to thank for this video men! It seems that you guessed what I intend to do this week, this helped me a lot because my idea was to forge this manually, what you did without doubt is extremely simpler, the only problem is that I do not have this tool to do Screw thread, I know that you can use Screw nut to do more is impossible to find some with a steel harden, I've seen in just a few old photos of people doing this manually using files, I already tried and it got really bad ...

Hallo Gabriel, nice to hear from you again. Maybe you can check with a local mechanik or at a car workschop first. I dont know if the material of the normal nuts is posible to harden. You can check out a local plumper too. They probably have inch thread cutters. Good luck!!!

That came out very well, you really need to get a small milling machine, all that grinding dust makes such a mess everywhere and gets into your lungs, you do very well with those cutting discs, every time I make a cut like that it uses a disc, so I use a hacksaw, also less dust, you got a very good finish on the thread, it must be a nice piece of steel you used, take care.
@homemadehistory7537
@homemadehistory7537 5 жыл бұрын
The disks I use are only from high quality. Since I nearly loose my nose by cutting. The disc breaks and the grinder jups up to my face. Mostly I use 1mm flexible disk from PFERD or KLINGSPOR. The material of the part is ST52 but the threadcutter is brand new, so the cut is perfect.

@@homemadehistory7537 That is one thing I am always wary of, the disc fragmenting, I will have to give them another try, but they produce so much dust and filth I end up hacksawing, the threading I usually do on the lathe by screwcutting, I find I get a much better thread that is dead square to the axis that way, I can also machine the concave pocket in the end, and get a dead square shoulder, you should start looking for a Lathe and Mill, with all the small engineering companies closing down they are out there, schools and colleges are also shutting down their engineering workshops as well.

@@453421abcdefg12345You are right and I am on the watch for some machines. My neighbor has an old laith from the 1930s in rather good condition. There is some checking like how to get it into my barn and what can I do with it and what power is needed. ;-) and than it will be a litle bit faster and easyer.

@@homemadehistory7537 : You will find it much easier with a lathe, you will need a 4 jaw chuck for use with square and octagonal workpieces, but a Lathe from the 1930s should be just right, a Lathe from that period will probable not has screwcutting facilities, but it is easy to make a tailstock die holder. The one essential is to have room to set it up, and you have plenty of that .

What sort of steel are you using for the breech plug? Is this mild steel or a higher carbon steel? Fantastic work.
@homemadehistory7537
@homemadehistory7537 Ай бұрын
For the barrel I use mild steel, seemless hydraulik pipe. That fits well to the preasure and should have at least 7 mm wall thickness at the raw material. Cos with the oktagon it will loose some thisckness...... The breech screw is mild steel as well 😁 hope this is helpfull to you 😁

I am having a go at making a wheellock and would like to ask a few questions. first the wheel, dost it need to be made from hardened steel like a flint lock frizen, what makes the sparks dose the pyright create the spark or is spark coming off the wheel. How far dose the rocker locate in the wheel notch.
@homemadehistory7537
@homemadehistory7537 5 жыл бұрын
A wheellock is the most complicated but as well the most resiable system ;-) You will love it. The wheel is hardened and the sparks are coming from the pyrite. It makes more and hotter sprks than a flintlock. Here are two liks that will help you: www.feuerwaffen.ch/waffenkonstruktionen.htm www.engerisser.de/Bewaffnung/Bewaffnung.html Sad to say that everything is written in german but i didnt find something like that in english. So have some nice building time
