Muzzleloader gunsmithing. Truing the breechplug seat.

This tool will aid in properly fitting a breech plug to a traditional muzzleloader barrel. It will clean up/true or deepen an existing threaded beech plug seat without damaging the threads. It requires a minimum of tools, no lathe or other heavy machinery needed though a drill press is an aid. This is for a 5/8" breech plug thread. Larger or smaller threads will require the proper drill rod size to match the tap drill size or a few thousands smaller. A 3/4 thread will need a 11/16 drill rod. Using the proper size will make the tool self aligning with the threaded hole so that the breech plug can seat against a flat surface perpendicular to the threaded shank of the plug and seal properly.

Guess they didn't know what a bottom tap is. I made a tapping set with a bottom tap ground to cut to the bottom of the shoulder. Most muzzle loading barrels are like 1137 which is not real hard and usually cuts easily. Good save and repair.

I have taps ground to absolute bottom and you can still cut into or dimple the face if not very careful.

If this is an operation you have to do on occasion you might want to look into an old school plumbers valve seat reamer.

That is one way to counterbore the barrel, but why not just bore it in your lathe? It would be much more square and take a fraction of the time.
