The Commodore is old now. Old tech, old looks, and old engine. Try and hit your fender on the Arteon and you'll have to either fix or change the bonnet as well because of that design that goes down to the wheel arch. The Stinger is also available in AWD and will probably be the most reliable down the road. Way to go, Stinger.

Well there's a ZB Commodore but it's really a Commodore. It's actually a Vauxhall/Opel Insignia which is basically a transverse engine, front wheel drive (or all wheel if you have the money) car. The car itself... there's nothing wrong but naming Vectra's successor as Commodore obviously IS! Surely there's no rear drive V8 option cause it's the Insignia. Because of that, either Arteon or even Stinger are worth considering. I would choose either one of them over ZB Commodore to make Holden think twice about their future Commodores or make them rename it back to Insignia at least.

the ls3 engine is a classic ,it will be as reliable as any subsequent engine, it is highly upgradeable ,with no decrease in reliability . The fact is ,it is old tech,but it has been developed to its fullest ,leaving us with a brilliant car,the stinger will out perform it but will be but a footnote between the fossil fuel and electric hybrid

He compared the interior of Stinger 330si the lower model to the top of line SS-V. He should have used the same comparable price model the Stinger GT to the SS-V. The best interior is the VW, but you have definitely compromised by having the worst performance out of the 3 cars and accepted a lower warranty level from the manufacturer compared to the KIA. Did he mention any of the Active and Passive safety systems that the KIA or VW has. The Holden has barely any of that. This is one of the most ill informed review.

Yes, I sat in a Stinger GT a couple of weeks ago - it was I think, nicer than the Redline - which is a good interior, but already starting to feel dated. Definitely nothing cheap about the Stinger GT's interior, if anything it feels like it belongs to a much more expensive vehicle. Of course the Commodore is a dinosaur in most ways - all that power yet it only manages a 13.5 quarter - clearly some very poor traction management going on there - or very mismatched transmission ratios, or the engine power is over-rated - which is something Commodore have always been good at doing.

Same about the Commodore. The VW is surprisingly quick for a 4 cyclinder. I have heard there is a V6TT engine on the cards soon.

Wasnt a great review IMO. Spent a good portion of the video on a drag race for some reason, but only then said general impressions - used the cheapest 6cyl stinger (not the GT that dominated the sales for the stinger), no mention of tech/features and cost.

Blessed is the country where you can afford to test these cars, and this in a common way. I love Australia for that. I just found this channel now on KZbin and what a wonderful gift. I was delighted, my passion Holden Commodore facing the one who wants to replace him the incredible Kia Stinger. Thank you Wheels folks. Oh, I forgot, Volkswagen is a mere helper in this Shakespeare play.

Having just watched an Arteon review from the UK, it's a bit of a cop out to say it has a much better interior than the other two. The other review pointed out all the naff bits in the Arteon interior which weren't mentioned here, so I'm not convinced it's much better.

I had an Arteon for a year and it was great but it needs more power (V6 400hp+) and a little bit more luxury inside by removing some of the plastic etc. But the Arteon has a really nice and easy tech inside it. Plus it’s gorgeous.

Kia has a all-wheel drive version in the GT plus they have aftermarket exhaust system for the car which sounds really good

I love the outgoing commodore. Never really driven one as holden commodore are not sold in SEZ. however I was fortunate to get into one when i visited my relatives in Australia. To me it was awesome, plenty of go. Now that i hear its gone and there will be no more aussie made commodore i am sad. Same goes for the aussie made ford. Kia stinger to me looks the part and may have better torque figures but will never be a true commodore SSV replacement. The arteon it too looks nice and has a sweet All wheel drive and nice cabin but to me will always remain a German car dont get me wrong I like it but will never replace the V8 commodore.

You say that the interior in the stinger is the lower out of the 3. But Your comparing the top of the line SS and VW with the lower spec stinger.... the GT stinger has much nicer interior and it will match if not beat the interior of the other two. Especially the dunny door. The VF’s do have the nicest interior of all commos but it’s still full of cheap plastic everywhere and cheap leather Side note to Kia. Please bring the AWD version to Australia !! Please please please.

i'm disappointed that you didnt use the Kia GT ,I bought a ssv redline just for the joy and involvement of the engine.The breakouts are predictable and fun ,and one other thing ,this is the only one of the three that offer a manual,which i have. The manual is where the ssv redline shines , performance figures are irrelevant ,i mean who cares if you're half a second behind ,as long as there is a smile planted on your face

A You cant get in a manual!!! B sounds like shit!!!! now thats about all i need to say but there is a C ,there are so many cars faster than both the Stinger and Redline and on the figures the stinger wont really disappear into the distance, driver ability will determine that,I said half a second but its more like 0.2 of a second. The Stinger is a good car ,if they could offer it up with a decent exhaust(the reason its shite is to pass euro specs) ,id have been interested despite the lack of manual option

I purchased a 2018 Stinger GT2 AWD (USA) in January, and I have very few complaints. I notice a lot of reviewers constantly harp on "quality" but it feels very bias. Prior to this, I had a fully loaded 2013 X5 50i, 2010 fully loaded X6 50i, and a fully loaded 2008 335i CV. I mention "fully loaded' only because I'm trying to highlight the fact that I didn't just get an inventory special off the lot, and therefore the highest quality was expected....and never delivered. In all three of those vehicles I experienced an unbelievable number of squeaks, rattles, mechanical issues, and cheap scratchy plastic items that seemed beneath such a product/brand...and yet, all 3 vehicles were plagued by those issues. While I can't say that the Stinger handles as well as a 335i (partly because its much larger and heavier), I do get far more tech features for at least $10k less. And lets be honest...a well equipped Stinger looks far better than any 3 series. Ive had so many more looks and compliments with the stinger than I ever had with my X6 which was an "edgy" vehicle at the time. And considering how dull and soulless BMWs have become, I can't say the marginally better build or finish quality makes up for the massive price difference. My complaints about the stinger? Maybe a little more road noise than I'd like, and other weirdly cheap omissions like one-touch up/down windows for all 4 windows (only the front ones offered), and no 360 degree parking cameras, though I understand other countries get those options. Performance wise, yea its not quite as sticky in the corners as a 335i, but how often are you REALLY going to take a corner at 60mph? As for the Commadore SS they compare it to, well...thats just an old pontiac/Chevy here in the states. That heads up display is literally NO DIFFERENT from my old Pontiac Grand Prix I had in college. The V-8, while loud, is gutless in comparison to modern engines. That infotainment system is garbage. The interior just looks paunchy and dated, and If you're familiar with GM brands here in the USA, its the same old drab, low-tech BS they've been pushing for years under different names. But yey for a huge back seat I guess? I mean, really? It took A LOT to stomach the fact that I was spending BMW bucks on a Kia, but it was well worth it in my opinion. Don't get sucked into brand snobbery. The days of conspicuous consumption are better left to the douchebag MAGA assholes in lifted micro-penis trucks. If you value the biggest bang for your buck, The stinger is unrivaled.

This video is full of inaccurate information at least as far as the Stinger is concerned. Which throws into doubt the accuracy on the other two cars. It also fails to take into account so many more variables when looking at a new car not just how big the engine is and how it sounds. How about the tech? Holden won't want to talk about that much as it is such garbage.

What information is inadequate? Perhaps it is, but you need to specify? And last time I looked Holden didn't make the Stinger or the Arteon, or the SS-V any more. So which Holden are you referring?

68404 I didn't say it was inadequate. I said it was inaccurate. Here is an example... I test drove the 2014, 15 and 16 Holden (HSV but is same across all Commodores) and it constantly gave me false alarms such as oncoming traffic. But I usually try and keep my comments brief least no one will read them.

I have a 2017 Passat 206TSI and came into it from the old SSV... Was absolutely blown away when on the test drive. Yes, it isn't the fastest car on the road, but it sure makes you feel special when matching/bettering toey V8 drivers at the lights 😁😁😁

What a rank review. Complain about features not in your test model stinger, but standard in the GT. Before buying mine I priced the Arteon R line, and it was dearer than a Stinger GT, and not by a small margin either. I also own a Calais V Sportswagon, and although it’s a good car does not match the build quality of the Stinger.

I wish the commodore came with Arteon’s interior, gear box & AWD system. We cant deny the fact that its a handsome sedan with great engine & sound. If it had a better way to put use of all that power it would be a winner

Hayden Davis the arteon is definately not an enthusiasts car. It's basically a longer Passat built on the economy MQB platform. The Stinger could full under that category. It just sounds trash.

TheWretchedWorld trash they may sound, but their performance can’t be disputed. Kia’s first attempt at making a true performance vehicle, and it sticks it to a Dunnydore; a well and truly developed car that has pleased the typical Australian for over 30 years. To me, that’s astounding.

Excellent timing! I have actually been cross-shopping these three, among a handful of others - so it's interesting to see them in the same video. They're not competitors in the traditional sense (ie, same concept with similar execution). They are very different cars, and which is "best" will depend entirely on which most closely aligns with what you personally want in a car. For me, I basically want an every-day useable GT - comfy, lazy, effortless for the daily grind, but able to have a bit of fun up to, say, 8/10, when the opportunity presents itself. Personally, these three all fit the bill to varying degrees, but none are perfect. If we got the AWD Stinger, or the Arteon had the turbo V6 rumoured to be in testing, or the Commodore didn't have such a horrendous thirst, things would be easier. Likewise, there are some question marks around the brands - what will become of Holden, VW's reliability woes and cost of repairs, and how Kia/Hyundai will evolve into this new territory (and whether it will stay in that segment). As far as the post-sales experience goes, Holden and VW have both shown an indifference to the plight of customers over the years, and I'll be interested to see how Kia go in this space once the first few issues arise now that they're entering a market in which the vehicles will be driven harder and quite possibly modified. Interesting times ahead, if only I could make up my mind!!

Sounds like you made your choice: Kia; No Arteon (beautiful but expensive running-cost), No Holden (V8 is cool, too thirsty and already old model). What did you choose in the end?

It's a good thing that rear wheel drive was found at the back end of two of these cars. I wonder if there was drive to the rear wheels at the back of the VW - maybe the rear wheel drive was moved to the front...?

Good vid wheels. And you are right the world has changed, so why do we keep getting drag race tests. The focus of a Holden SSV red line is track days. FE3 suspension and Brembo brakes are for circuit. Can we PLEASE see a comparison video like this one with the circuit in mind .

The Stinger lacks 2 things by design when launching. 1. restricted engine noise. 2. restricted throttle in the beginning to protect the longevity of the transmission.

Out of the 3 I’d definitely take the Stinger or the Commodore. If you’re just after performance then you can look to the past and get yourself a BA/BF XR6T or an R34 GT-T (or even a JZA80 turbo if you look hard enough) and take them well beyond this level of performance at a fraction of the price. The Australian market is pretty lucky in that regard.

Did i miss something? "[The Arteon] competes in a segment not previously occupied by [Volkswagen]". The Arteon is essentially just the new Passat CC, in exactly the same segment - the 4 door coupe style sedans.

Love that v8 sound nothing like it but it's definitely the stinger hands down with all the tech you can ever ask for and awd and with just a plug in tune for under 400 dollars adds over 100 hp and tq I'll run out the life of both those cars lol and on top of it all the stinger has a longer warranty then both cars. 💪💪

VW has a reliability problem and a FWD based chassis will never handle as well as a well sorted RWD based car like the Stinger.

That might be true for at A3/S3 and the TT, but not for anything above in the Audi line up. A FWD has limitations, but these have the rear wheels to help and handle better than many RWD.

Chris Povey what you are saying is "handle well" for a FWD car. It's still going to understeer, just less with the trickery. Lap times are only a part about handling. There are cars that are absolute dogs at handling but being fast for sure wide sticky tires to make up for lap times. Overall decent review but a couple glaring missteps... at 5:15 he said that neither VW nor Kia had entries in this segment before. Well it's a bit vague as to what segment exactly he's talking about but surely it can't be the large-ish 4 door coupe segment since VW at least had the CC before the Arteon. Secondly at 5:49 he says the Kia has more torque than the Holden but the figures they posted on all three cars earlier shows the Holden having the highest torque figure

I just want to know what model of the stinger he used... I have a GT2 and I'm no fan boy or anything, but the interior is quite nice it it, not plasticy, the wheel is different to boot with leather trim and nappa leather seats... Just kinda interesting that he decided to compare a lower quality model... Also the stinger has an all wheel drive option which further decreases it's 0-60 time. Just some things to take into consideration that I noticed and figured I'd share.

No Gabriel, that all wheel drive option is NOT available on the Stinger in Australia. Only in overseas markets.

I have a 3 litre twin turbo v6 nissan motor and 500hp is easy but defiantly not cheap to achieve. My engine $25000 + Stinger will be exactly the same story. unless you are just kidding yourself.

That doesn’t surprise me. You can squeeze a reliable 500 out of 20+ year old RB25s with nothing but bolt ons and a solid tune. I’m looking forward to seeing what the after market has in store for the Stinger’s V6 in the future.

WoW. Wheels Australia. Do u even research before u do these comparisons? At least compare the Stinger GT model not the Si. Your complaints about the interior are moot..Seriously, u said, “step up to the GT where the sports exhaust is a standard”. GT doesn’t come with sports exhaust, it is a dealer fitted optional bi- modal exhaust. I agree, Arteon is a good fastish sedan but come on, saying Volkswagen is a company that has been doing great interiors.? V8 roar is great? Yes, absolutely. Is SSV Redline fun to drive? Yes, when they run. But, Holden and reliability have never been used in the same sentence before, probably never will be.

Maybe I shouldn't say this here but after many years of V8 hoons letting rip outside our house while leaving the nearby servo, each one convinced he is the only guy that has a super powerful loud arse ute (there were at least 20 per day and one day two hit each other hard!) we are glad we might get some sleep now, and the AMG 6.3 shitboxes with previously illegal exhaust diverters I hope will shit themselves in the first 100 K, they sound HORRIBLE! PS I think the utes dwindled when the boys found they couldn't afford new tyres every 20,00km.

A 6.2 v8 was matched by a 2.0t and smashed by a V6 t says it all progress wise. Time to move on and let the ol Commodore R.I.P. why not review the new commodore with a v6 and AWD. Better matched style and character to the cars your reviewing?

arteon is a big heavy FWD car with a haldex on rear axle. That's doesn't mean is awd car, torque to rear being pathetic low.. as you hear and see at start (if you check, will be obvious looking at 60ft regular for a FWD car!). The only vw big cars who's not just "bigger golf's", are the Touareg and Phaeton.

They don't sell it in Australia as the typically warm, sunny weather negates the need for the added traction. It seems Kia are only offering AWD in markets where it snows. It also adds weight, cost and increased fuel consumption.

Yes... but what about the ZB Commodore VXR (Opel/Vauxhall Insignia actually)? I bet we all agree that the ZB Commodore is NOT a Commodore. Surely a Kia Stinger is proper replacement for die hard Commodore fans where a "ZB Commodore" is a Front Wheel Drive joke.

It surprises me all the people rooting for Kia. In my friend's Kia, if you drum on the steering wheel to the radio, each tap causes the interior lights and dash to flicker. The power windows need help getting all the way up. Those are just two visible issues. I can't trust what I don't see.

turbo are not reliable as normally aspirated engine. I have a 2006 Kia Optima here in the United States. The turbo went out around 33,000 miles. It has to be replaced. The only good thing it was still under warranty and they provide me with a loan car while they are fixing my car. Kia warranty are great. The technician said if I didn't have a warranty if would have cost me almost 2,500 to 3,000 US dollars to fix. Now, that the warranty is over it makes me think twice about purchasing cars who has turbo's in them.

At the drag race you state the Kia has 510nm, commodore 570nm. Then go on to state the Kia has more torque than the commodore. It does have the torque down low but it still doesn't have the torque of a v8

Pretty strange that he puts them on a drag strip, and then ignores that the commodore gets smashed by the Stinger by 0.5 to 100ks and a second over the duration. That is massive. I dislike both Kia and Holden marques, and have driven both extensively over the years. To be fair, Kias are looking very well built these days. Aussies (like Americans) like to bash what they don’t know, and European cars fit that bill for many. There are hundreds of great German cars. Why do you think that they are so popular around the world??? Is everyone else stupid? If they kept falling apart, they wouldn’t be viable, or result in long lasting sales Just look at the death of the British car industry, and in recent times here the rise and fall of Jeep. I’ve owned 4 VAG cars, and enjoyed them all for varying reasons. Commodore is a loveable beast, and a great sofa on wheels. Fast Commodores I do not know. They look and sound like great big angry dinosaurs, and what little boy doesn’t like a T-Rex? “but the game has changed” the presenter claims. The game changed 15 yrs ago, Holden didn’t react, and that’s why this GM offshoot died. PS. How often do you see 5 big adults in a car?

The commodore probably feels the same inside as the Kia. They arent that great inside at all. Not entirely sure why the Kia therefore gets a ‘black mark’ against its name for interior quality, especially when the ergonomics are far better than the commodore.
