As a Knights fan talking to other Knights fans, you have no idea how many times I have referenced this comeback when fans get too cocky. This year in the playoffs and the final, I could not get this loss out of my head. Every game, 10min left in the 3rd I would always think "is this where we fall apart again". Luckily it didn't happen, but this HANDS DOWN is one of the top 5 comebacks in NHL history. We didnt lose cause of the bad call, we lost because we let the bat call rattle us, resulting in the complete collapse of our play style.

As a Sharks fan, I remember seeing the look on the ice, and it appeared to be a cross check, then a sluefoot, but when I saw the other angle, I thought 5 was a bit much. That being said, I'll never forget Couture's first goal and him shouting, "THATS ONE!" Epic comeback, but the hockey Gods knew better. Pittsburgh killed us, and rightly so. Oh well. One of these days I'll get to see the cup in San Jose.

I wouldn't call it the greatest comeback given the circumstances surrounding it. It was a blown call, giving the Sharks a 5-minute pp. Sure, the Knights should've focused on killing it off, but it was their piss poor response to the call that allowed the Sharks to capitalize on it. The fact that Pavelski was injured on the play makes me not too worried at the 5 minute penalty being the "wrong" call. The refs could have added an attempt to injure penalty, or a double minor, or 2 seperate penalties for cross checks putting the sharks up 5 on 3, etc. It was over the line and uncalled for on the part of the knights.
@glenmiller1437
@glenmiller1437 Жыл бұрын
Sharks fan here. Most comments about the play (including in the video here) question if the crosscheck was a major penalty. To me that was never the issue. The crosscheck was an OK hockey play, and frankly not even penalty-worthy in most circumstances. Instead, while trying to regain his balance from the crosscheck, Pavelski got a second push from another player that forced him back on his head. That was a very dangerous play against a player who could not defend himself, and that was worthy of the 5 minute major. It was a nothing push in most situations, but in that situation, very dangerous. Consequently, the 5 minute major was deserved, but for a combination of the two things, which probably isn't really a penalty, but rule books can't cover every circumstance.
@TheMetzor
@TheMetzor Жыл бұрын
I disagree first the guy who you are attributing the danger to wasn't the one penalized it was the initial contact. 2nd I don't think we should have penalties being called decided by whether a person was injured or not. Even the 2nd hit wasn't that bad guys get hit all the time that are off bal7lanced or not in spots where they can protect themselves. I would be okay with that penalty on the second guy if he was out of control or charging into him but a shove to try to clear space even on someone falling isn't intentionally injuring someone and warrants penalties.
@glenmiller1437
@glenmiller1437 Жыл бұрын
@@TheMetzor True, the penalty was called on the first crosscheck, which (as I mentioned) was not penalty-worthy. (It was technically a penalty, but that's never called in NHL games.) The league does call penalties based on injury on a regular basis, per the written rules. (High sticking, drawing blood, gets you a double minor instead of a single minor.) You may not agree, but it's not out-of-the-ordinary. The second hit, on its own, was hardly anything, but it was very dangerous in that situation. There was a disregard for another players safety. Additionally, Pavelski was not vulnerable because he was skating with the puck with his head down, or some other action he took on is own. He was made vulnerable because of the actions of the opposing team, and once vulnerable, was injured by additional action from the opposing team. They put him out of the playoffs for a few games. There should be a price to pay for that, or what motivates teams to avoid doing that kind of thing? It's wrong to do that. It is odd to have a game where players are supposed to be concerned about the safety of another players, yet per the rules, they can deliberately go crashing into each other on purpose. Perfectly legal hits injure guys all the time. It's hard to justify some of that. All that said, Vegas failed the safety test with Pavelski, and they caught a major penalty because of it. Technically, it was called wrong on the ice, but the result was (I think) correct anyhow. Sometimes that's the best you can get.
@TheMetzor
@TheMetzor Жыл бұрын
@@glenmiller1437 By the books they could call infractions almost every 10 seconds. It sucks injuries happen and I do think the refereees need to call blantant ones to stop from retaliation see peitrangelo and dreisatl incident this year. However the play in question weren't called correctly the league even admitted it. It sucks that Palvaski got hurt on it but do you think they still call either shoves if he gets up right away and isn't injured ? The issue I have is they only made the call because he was injured and not because of what happened. It wasn't player safety issue it was referees not watching the play and thinking something happened that didn't. They then made the mistake on it with no way to correct it. Anytime you have live contact and players making split second decisions you have that risk.
@glenmiller1437
@glenmiller1437 Жыл бұрын
@@TheMetzor I guess I have to go back to my original comment. Rule books can't reasonably cover all circumstances. It was a missed/botched call that got it right in the end (in my opinion) anyhow. I don't know if the play was then (or is now) reviewable, or something a coach can challenge. Maybe that's a good compromise; allowing the refs to take another look with video review. Frankly, I've lost track of where we disagree. I guess it's "injury based" penalties. I think there is a place for it, and you (I think) don't. I feel that way due to player safety. It's like knee on knee hits. That can be career ending. Everything that can reasonably be done to discourage and penalise knee-on-knee should be done. (Even to your argument about it only being injury based... Pavelski didn't have the puck and they pushed him to the ground. That's at least interference. That's a minor, which could have been called.)

@@TheMetzor - the nhl rulebook in effect at that time called for penalties to be called depending upon if a player was injured. The penaly call was correct since it led to injury intent or no intention does not come into consideration.

Goodrow had sat almost all of the 3rd period and OT. Sharks coach pete deboer would shorten his bench early if they were down or only ahead by one. The burst of speed along from the attacker with the weak stick check from a tired defender tell it all.

It's difficult to debate about this with Knights fans because the response is always "It wasn't a major", if you believe that or not, doesn't matter. Bad calls happen in this game all the time. After watching this happen in real time and again in the video, the thing that strikes me as the most insane part of what happened here is not the bad call, or Vegas' reaction to it, or the Sharks getting 4 straight PP goals, or Vegas coming back to tie it. It's Brayden McNabb's play on the OT goal. With four men back and only three Sharks on the rush, he freezes in place and barely challenges Goodrow driving wide at all, while he's in no way gapped up on Karlsson and there's two Vegas players in better position to do that anyways. Just horrible, atrocious defense by a guy who somehow, with all of Vegas' turnover since, was still there on the Cup winning team. I'd have fired him into the sun after this game.

refs are human. they will make mistakes. you have to accept that. then you have to kill off the penalty. if they get one, so be it you have a 3 goal lead. they gave up 4 goals. that's not on the refs that's on Vagas.

I feel the same way about this call as the Saints/Rams Pass Interference missed call a few years ago. The Refs didn't make Brees throw that Interception in Overtime. The Refs didnt let the Rams drive down the field in less than 2 minutes to tie the game. Is anyone mentioning that missed facemask call on Goff which would have given the Rams 1st and goal at like the 1 yard line (missed call resulted in a field goal instead of a TD on that play.) Shit happens in sports. You get blessed and screwed over sometimes. Good teams overcome it.

I'm a Sharks fan and I still remember getting so frustrated by the third Vegas goal that I turned my TV off, only to get an incredulous text ten minutes later asking if I'd seen what the Sharks had done. From then on, I've refused to give in to the frustration because that moment showed me just how quickly everything can turn around in hockey.

I always think of the hit on Pierre Turgeons that immediately ended the 1993 Islanders story book playoff run. The Islanders had just beat the reigning champ Penguins in seven games in a legendary series. Overcoming prime Lemiuex, Jagr etc...But after that Turgeon hit despite the Islanders best efforts it became obvious they weren’t the same team anymore. That series was all but over after the first game. It was such a dirty and uncalled for hit as well. The worst way to decide a playoff series like that. Even if I wasn’t an Islanders fan no way I would ever forget that

The knights got away with many, many headshots that series. Im sure the sharks were letting the refs know about them game after game. Refs were likely primed to be looking for head contact when this play happened. If the knights didnt play that style, who knows, maybe the call wouldnt have gone the way it did. Also, The Sharks got called for many petty calls that series as well, so it wasnt a clear case of 'thats playoff hockey. Whistles get put away."

I don't understand the hate agaist the official. He did a great Job given his tools, the League just failed in providing him the needed Tools for such a situation. Honestly seeing this in real time and having to watch what is happening to the Puck, I would also have called a Major, when after a Cross check the opponent is in this much distress. Up to this Point the Players and officials dideverything they could, the Problem came from a single source, a weak Rulebook

There was no need for Eakin to cross check him in the first place. Your up 3 goals with 10 minutes left, why are you cross checking off of the face off? Even if it was the wrong call. If he doesn't cross check him, all this never happens.

I think it's like the old saying pride comes before a fall, the Vegas Knights thought they were the best and could win the 7th game with ease. However, their careless attitude toward their opponents safety caused a shocking powerplay epilogue that very few would have liked to see except the San Jose Sharks and they defiantly picked up the pace and wrecked them.

Hate to say it at best it’s a double minor as a clear cross check can’t be erased and 50/50 on he’d hit with second knights player or interference as there is no clear intention to avoid the hit and at worst the interference call I mentioned it taken at hitting a vulnerable player and can be a 5 and a game anyways with an additional cross checking penalty.

For a historical video consider researching Mario Lemieux average goals and assists per game calculated as if he played full seasons for his first 13 seasons, then tally the number for his career. His points tally if he had played full seasons will blow your mind. Also look at who his line mates were prior to Coffey arriving. I only suggest this to you because you make the best NHL videos and the hockey world really needs to know just how good he was. Who better than you to present it! Here is a clue - it's easily well over 1000 goals and 2000 assists for his career.

That is still crosschecking, ruslting in an injury, a double minor. You see the issue is: If the stick had hit Pavelski in the face, that would have been High Sticking, resulting in an injury, 5 min major and game misconduct. Crosschecking doesnt have to be in the face. It can be on the KNEE or anywhere else. High Sticking is always in the FACE, that's why there are two rules, not just one. So, even a crosscheck that isn't to the face CAN be a 5 minute major and game misconduct: The ref has the right to determine the length of the penalties. That was a dirty play by Eakin, and since the puck wasnt present at the time, it was also INTERFERENCE which can result in a 5 minute major, because it caused injury. The old rule said crosschecking is defined as both hands on the stick and no part of the stick on the ice. They removed that line and just call it when they feel like it, which is next to never. Darien Hatcher was an expert at legal crosschecking and used the technique to keep the front of his net clear without getting called for crosschecking, because he kept the blade of his stick on the ice.

This is one of those plays where even though there may not have been a cross-checking penalty, Pavelski's head got smashed into the ice because of 2 Knights players. It's hard to say that shouldn't award a major penalty imo, even though it was not Eakin and probably not intentional on Stastny. But I saw it as along the lines of hitting a defenseless receiver in the NFL.

The one correction I’d make is this was actually the correct call. With the rules at the time, a play resulting in an injury was going to be accompanied by a 5m major penalty. Obviously there are exceptions but what Eakin did was unnecessary and downright stupid. His play caused Pavelski to lose his balance and then he falls and is injured. The correct call at the time with the rules they had was 5m major. No the officiating wasn’t bad in that game, nor was that call incorrect. The referees did exactly what they were told to do with the rules they were given. The correct call was made, Vegas lost their shit for 5 minutes after playing a perfect game and lost the series. They have nobody to blame but themselves because they had killed off 4 previous Sharks’ powerplays in that game. Why would this one be any different? It shouldn’t have been but they let their emotions get the best of them and lost.

There has always been a great deal of debate about the 5-minute major which kicked off the Sharks comeback, and a great deal of grumbling from Golden Knights fans about the same. I have always believed this to simply be justice provided by the hockey gods for the absolutely egregious goaltender interference call against Logan Couture in Game 2 of that series. That call, which took away a Shark's goal that would have given them a 4-3 lead early in the second period after falling down 3-0 in the first and storing back to a 3-3 tie before the end of that period resulted in the Golden Knights scoring a power play goal on the subsequent man advantage, is probably the primary reason why that series went 7 games.
