Dr Charles deals with an impatient sick person that rubs him the wrong way.
Season 2 Episode 14 "A Cold Front"
The hospital is put on high alert after they become overwhelmed with patients involved in a multi-vehicle pile-up during a blizzard. Dr. Manning and Dr. Halstead force a patient to make a decision on whether her son or her nephew will receive a blood transfusion. Dr. Choi tends to a burn victim whose condition is deteriorating and tries to see through his dying wish to say goodbye to his wife. Meanwhile, Dr. Rhodes is forced to do an emergency cesarean section on a haemorrhaging patient and Dr. Charles meets an agitated patient trying to get a prescription refilled.

@@Butterfly-op8vf I think it was. He pretended to have killed himself just so that he could get someone's attention. Imagine the feeling of being told someone killed themselves and you could have stopped it. Pretty bad feeling, right? Then imagine feeling that for a whole day, then that person suddenly showed up and it turned out it was just a prank. He was going to get seen to, all the needed to do was wait for the doctor to be available. But he couldn't wait, so he faked his death, then snuck in the hospital and watched the TV there all day. It's true that he needed help, but the hospital was so busy at the time (treating people who were dying) that they even had to have a guy who had a serious hand injury, wait for over an hour before seeing him (which usually takes priority over drug addicts).

How compassionate is Dr. Charles? Most hospital staff have zero patience with purely drug-seeking patients (although seeking a psych med is admittedly a very different situation from seeking an analgesic one), and you can understand why. That sort of thing could really burn you out, after a while. But Dr. Charles is as respectful and gentle with him (aside from the, "Shut your mouth," which I think was pretty reasonable, under the circumstances - and was a reaction to his shitty, manipulative actions and how they profoundly personally shook him, rather than their initial exchange) as he is with every other patient he meets. The man ought to be canonised, or at least thrown a really good street party.

Imagine a show centred around this character specifically. Steadfast, always willing to listen and go an extra mile but no pushover. All while navigating patients with mental health issues/disorders/illness and their treatment, _in combination_ with scepticism from his colleagues, social stigma towards both him and his patients. His personal life and how it is affected by this kind of profession. Honestly, I have never watched this show but I watch these videos only because of the character of Dr. Charles.

How is seeking an anxiolytic different to seeking opiates? Both have very large potential for misuse, both result in altered state of mind, reduced anxiety, and are both CNS depressants. I might agree if he was seeking an anti depressant and not Alprazolam. His 72 hour hold was completely illegal and showed how his emotions can get the better of him. Sure its awful to pretend that someone shot themselves after turning them away, and especailly to a psychiatrist whoi likely deals with this, and will feel even more responsible than a regular triage nurse, emergency medicine MD, or internal medicine MD. However the psychiatric hold was purely personal, and spiteful, and would get his licence revoked under the circumstances. Yeah the patient did something awful, but you can't hold people as revenge or punishment for it, which is EXACTLY what he was doing.

@@PBMS123 sure, and it's things like that that keep him from being a Mary Sue type of character. His moments of weakness are real, and tangible, but his motivation is consistently good - even if flawed, as we see here. I think he's a fantastic character. He's so kind. He's consistently doing his best; as a doctor, as a mentor, and as a human being. I admire the Hell out of him.

Clearly just someone who is dependent on the drug. Completely unprofessional and illegal to hold him, and he knows it, this is being done out of spite, and that is not okay. I’m not sure it is out of spite. He is obviously unstable and Doctor Charles could genuinely be concerned for his welfare, especially seeing as how desperate he is to get hold of the drugs. He could intend to overdose or take too much accidentally. I think he definitely needs to be reviewed and for his own safety a 72 hour hold is best.

True, but you must remember doctor Charles may have been quite unprofessional and snappy but the patient has no right to talk to him that way, I understand that he has a personality disorder but therapists still need to remind the patients that there is a line where they need to understand what is right to say and what is wrong to say just because they need medical help does not mean they can be that disrespectful and like I said therapists need to remind them about that, but I see where your coming from.

Some explanations from Him helped me with my life, I am already a boy with Asperger and many people did not understand me including my Parents and my Brother. When the chapter that they tried to kill him arrived, I was very scared and the only thing that crossed my mind was to please not die, since the series is not the same without him. What makes me sad the most about him is his life that many times he has not been able to be there for his wives and daughters. If he were my father I would be very proud of him because at least in my life I would have someone who understands me and I wouldn't mind if he didn't spend a lot of time with me because of his work.

For people saying that it's just an addict- have you ever been through a benzo withdrawal? It's far worse than heroin. And one of the few withdrawals which can and WILL kill you. I can tell you how it feels like, been there myself- first comes some sleeplessness and anxiety. Some mild confusion. If you were taking it for panic disorder, it comes back. Then come huge disturbances in thought, you can't think straight, every single little thing irritates you. Every light you look at seems like staring into the sun, everything you hear goes again and again in a loop in your mind. Your blood pressure spikes to dangerous levels (mine was 170 AFTER I managed to calm down somewhat), heartbeat goes up, sometimes jumping up to 200 bpm. You would do anything to make it go away, lying, manipulation, fuck it- you'd rob a drug store if you had to. Or just off yourself then and there if you were suffering from severe depression. And then comes the funniest part- delirium tremens. You start seeing and hearing things which are not real. All of them terrifying, like being awake and living in a nightmare you can't wake up from. Your brain was overloaded for too long. You start seeing auras- signs of whats coming next. Grand mal seizures. Not small ones, that brain hyperactivity which was building up for days now doesn't just go away. You don't get urgent medical help at this point- there is a good chance you are done. Luckily, I live in a country with great health care. Went to ER, got diazepam straight away and a prescription for some other long acting benzo so I could taper until I see my psychiatrist. And the funny thing is- I did not abuse benzos in the first place. I used them exactly how I was supposed to, and I just wanted to get off them a little bit earlier since I thought my antidepressants were working good enough for panic attacks already. I simply ended up tapering too fast. Thought "fuck it, just one day at a time, will get through this and it will be all fine". Took some days off for this, tried to relax as much as I could. All until I suddenly started seeing auras and hearing some kind of girl humming non stop. A beautiful, yet absolutely horrifying sound. It felt like death itself was calling to me.

People who didn’t experience it, will never understand. Not worth to explain them bro. We know how bad it is. I’d rather have several injuries like a broken nose, an eye poked out than a benzo/opiate withdrawal for months. I’m dead serious.

He is also my favorite character from Chicago Med.

I don't even need to make a call... I can fill in a form online, using a very specific form of digital identification that is tied to me without being possible to replicate, and request a refill. If it is an ongoing medication, then I will get the refill. Granted, there are quite a few things that are done through digital means in my country.

From a medical perspective, drug addiction is a mental illness. It can be a serious one. We can blame people for it, because it’s easier for us to understand and cope with that way. But reality is, he might’ve been desperate, his withdrawals might’ve been unbearable. The answer isn’t to give him more drugs, but we can at least offer understanding and hope (“you don’t have to be dependant on this stuff, you could have a life where you don’t need it to be happy”)

In all seriousness, they should do a much larger episode on a patient on withdrawals of Benzodiazepines. It is literally like being tortured alive, for days on end. I've been through some pretty painful experiences in life, and I can safely say that suddenly going cold turkey on Xanax easily ranks in at number 1.
