Billie Eilish is the most talked about teen on the planet. So let’s talk.
She amassed over a billion streams before even releasing her debut album. In part due to the overnight sensation that was, “Ocean Eyes.”
She was only 13 when it was recorded but otherwise it’s a pretty straight-forward pop tune that displayed her sultry-vocal talents and her brother Finneas’ production prowess. The brother/sister duo shared the track on SoundCloud and it took off shortly after. The platform is usually known for giving rise to DIY-hip-hop artists -- it’s not common for a pop act to find overnight success on SoundCloud -- but then again, Billie isn’t your common pop star.
Her EP was strong but it’s her debut that proved the buzz to be worthy. WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? is consistent, cohesive and self-aware. A whole piece of art with songs that service one another. One of the best selling records of 2019, it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 -- making her the first artist born in the 21st century to do so. Yeah -- she was born after 9/11. Feel old yet? It became the best performing album of 2019 in the US with 12 of the album’s 14 tracks charting on the Billboard Hot 100 -- the most ever for a female musician. She’s garnered six Grammy nominations including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Making her the youngest artist to ever be nominated for all four major categories. In the following months, she will be the youngest artist ever to record a Bond theme.
To understand what’s so special about Billie and her music, let’s analyze her biggest hit to date “Bad Guy” subverts genre, musical form, narrative perspective and even gender roles.
Billie Eilish swept the big four awards at the 2020 Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year
She also took home Best Pop Vocal Album and her brother Finneas picked up two awards himself: Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. Billie Eilish will now grace the March issue of Vogue magazine. Billie Eilish releases No Time To Die, the new James Bond theme.

People complain about her music being trash, yet people complain about bubble gum pop-music that is made to be appealing to a mass audience aka “mainstream”. I think she’s doing her own thing, I’m not a fan of her music personally, I can’t name one song besides Bad Guy, but I am a fan of how she did it. Her brother is the mastermind behind it all. That’s what I mean by “revolutionary”, these are just kids making music in their bedrooms. Music back then used to be pumped out of like factories, genres like country & mainstream pop were fed to us through MTV & whatever was on the radio & people didn’t like that & they complained about it, that’s how underground music started. Now there’s kids blowing up because a large audience liked their little songs they made with their laptop. Nobody is asking you to like Billie Eilish but understand that these were just kids trying to have some fun making music & their dreams came true. & I think that is revolutionizing music, shedding light on those who aren’t being heard enough.

I’ve seen a lot of people say that Billie is this generation’s Avril Lavigne and that makes me worried that her career is going to end up like Avril’s, with a promising first album, a fantastic follow up that lived up to that potential, and it’s all downhill after that and she starts working with generic hitmaker producers like Max Martin to stay relevant

@r s People thought that the same thing was going to happen with Avril, But after that second album (which was fantastic), instead of continuing that sound but with more maturity, she decided to become an overproduced diva out of nowhere and ditched her old producers (most of which had a background in rock music) to work with the same guy that produced a bunch of songs for Katy Perry and Kesha for some ungodly reason, easily the biggest sellout move for me a female artist since Gwen Stefani’s transition from No Doubt to her solo career, really praying that Billie doesn’t do this because I really enjoy her music so far

@Avocado Pirate She sold out way before she had Lyme disease, her music took a massive nosedive in quality after her magnum opus, Under My Skin, Best Damn Thing had a few good songs but overall it was an overproduced and even at times unlistenable disaster and didn’t improve at all after that, especially with her new album having some of the worst mixing/production I’ve heard in a long time in addition to being musically lacking

this video brought together so beautifully, billies intentions and experiences expressed in her music. I love her music and I always will love her for being the soul of my happiness and reassurance when I was in a dark place. I cry every time I watch her documentary, and as a movie lover, I appreciate all of the artistic choices in it too. Its harder to reach out to all of us who joined her fandom when she was a teenager, because shes at a place where shes better now, and we are so proud of her for doing that. some of us just prefer her when she was an angsty, moody teenager because we could relate to her more. but her music and movie arent going anywhere, and thats the amazing thing about art that Billie appreciates too. this career lets you grow because whatever you make is here to stay if you want it to, and it wont go anywhere.

I think she is just the best manifestation of the depressed zoomer generation. I think artists like her will be even more popular in the future. Doomed economically and socially by the Covid crisis, doomed politically because of the radicalisation in the first world and doomed in global prospects by the climate deterioration and the rise of China. We feel like we have good chance of becoming the second lost generation of the West, and many are hopeless. Hence the riots, suicides, shootings, and sad lonely music. And the general acceptance of depression as the “cool” standart.
