They’re still out there, at least 20 series 71 and 92’s are listed for sale every week at Old Forge Power Products in Scranton PA and hundreds are listed elsewhere…..if you want to save them I’d suggest buying a few because when they don’t sell they go for scrap. The good news is even though they were pretty negligent in firing this one up it is likely still fine and a perfectly rebuildable core engine. As long as you don’t throw a rod or spin a bearing these can be rebuilt over and over again. In this case they did at least have it cranking long enough to build oil pressure before it ran off and it’s likely the bottom end survived since it was as still rolling over freely afterward.

When you go to start it after a while, take the valve covers off and make sure all 8 of the injectors racks move freely. These work just like the governor on the engine of a lawn mower. They are in full fuel when it's off and then move back to idle or full throttle when running. (Depending on the position of the throttle lever) The injectors can get stuck in full fuel. Leading to a runaway. Even if it's just one injector. If that engine ran like that for say about 5 minutes, it would seize up prematurely or worse, throw something out of the crankcase. So always make sure that the racks are free before starting if it's been sitting for a long time.
@rad37669 ай бұрын
Pull the valve covers, put a pair of vise-grips on the rack so you have control of the rack while starting. A Detroit of this vintage will have the older style rack (2 screws), even one hung injector will hold all the others at full fuel. Ditch the ether. Prime the fuel system by filling it thru the top of the secodary fuel filter (gravity) pr by using a small pump.

Ether has killed more engines than anything else. Watched a fool in Anchorage trying to start a frozen 8-53 mid winter. Used up 3 or 4 cans of ether. When he ran out, he got the cutting torch and blew pure oxygen into the air cleaner. The right cylinder head landed about 100 feet downrange.
@captainchicken898320 күн бұрын
idk if it was the ether that killed the motor dude, that is top-fuel levels of pressure to just eject a 150+ pound cylinder head from it's bolts and launch 100 feet. ive been wondering what nitromethane (fuel that contains a large amount of oxygen) would end up doing to a diesel, i think i got a general answer lmao. If you need proof that engines literally dont care if you use ether, check out this vidya from Zip Ties And Bias Plies here on YT kzbin.info/www/bejne/roPWlp-drrB3rbM , ive witnessed many detroits and 7.3 IDI's take dozens of cans of the good stuff with no ill effects, its just really low octane fuel to help cold starts. shit, old-school bulldozers and other old big diesel equipment came from the factory with small ether tanks and an ether button to get a cold start going quickly, if ether wont start an engine, you have problems worse than ether inhalation lol

That was painful to watch. The most common cause of a runaway 2 stroke Detroit is a stuck injector, as many commenters have already said. But also a bad turbocharger with a leaky seal can cause an engine to runaway on crankcase oil leaking out of the turbo. On these Detroit engines a bad end seal in the blower rotors can also leak enough engine oil to cause a runaway, but that is very rare.
