Yank the valve covers and make sure the rack moves freely. It only takes one stuck injector to hold them all wide open. Common problem, especially after sitting for a long time

From what I've read, they were designed to go to full fuel position when they're shut down, which is why they often stay stuck in full fuel the next time they're started years later.

They’re still out there, at least 20 series 71 and 92’s are listed for sale every week at Old Forge Power Products in Scranton PA and hundreds are listed elsewhere…..if you want to save them I’d suggest buying a few because when they don’t sell they go for scrap. The good news is even though they were pretty negligent in firing this one up it is likely still fine and a perfectly rebuildable core engine. As long as you don’t throw a rod or spin a bearing these can be rebuilt over and over again. In this case they did at least have it cranking long enough to build oil pressure before it ran off and it’s likely the bottom end survived since it was as still rolling over freely afterward.

When you go to start it after a while, take the valve covers off and make sure all 8 of the injectors racks move freely. These work just like the governor on the engine of a lawn mower. They are in full fuel when it's off and then move back to idle or full throttle when running. (Depending on the position of the throttle lever) The injectors can get stuck in full fuel. Leading to a runaway. Even if it's just one injector. If that engine ran like that for say about 5 minutes, it would seize up prematurely or worse, throw something out of the crankcase. So always make sure that the racks are free before starting if it's been sitting for a long time.
@rad3766
@rad3766 9 ай бұрын
Pull the valve covers, put a pair of vise-grips on the rack so you have control of the rack while starting. A Detroit of this vintage will have the older style rack (2 screws), even one hung injector will hold all the others at full fuel. Ditch the ether. Prime the fuel system by filling it thru the top of the secodary fuel filter (gravity) pr by using a small pump.

Ether has killed more engines than anything else. Watched a fool in Anchorage trying to start a frozen 8-53 mid winter. Used up 3 or 4 cans of ether. When he ran out, he got the cutting torch and blew pure oxygen into the air cleaner. The right cylinder head landed about 100 feet downrange.
@captainchicken8983
@captainchicken8983 20 күн бұрын
idk if it was the ether that killed the motor dude, that is top-fuel levels of pressure to just eject a 150+ pound cylinder head from it's bolts and launch 100 feet. ive been wondering what nitromethane (fuel that contains a large amount of oxygen) would end up doing to a diesel, i think i got a general answer lmao. If you need proof that engines literally dont care if you use ether, check out this vidya from Zip Ties And Bias Plies here on YT kzbin.info/www/bejne/roPWlp-drrB3rbM , ive witnessed many detroits and 7.3 IDI's take dozens of cans of the good stuff with no ill effects, its just really low octane fuel to help cold starts. shit, old-school bulldozers and other old big diesel equipment came from the factory with small ether tanks and an ether button to get a cold start going quickly, if ether wont start an engine, you have problems worse than ether inhalation lol

You have to know what you are doing first grab the shit down lever make sure it’s free work the throttle make sure it’s free too make sure the emergency stop flap is there and operating as a lot say not a bad idea to pull the rocker covers and operate the rack tubes. The biggest thing fooling with these engines is to have a big CO2 fire extinguisher disconnect the air intake on the supercharger you can if you get a runaway stick that horn into that intake and discharge it till it dies ! The safest way to deal with one . I have ones from 2-53 all the way to 16-71s at my shop saving them for my older age .

Detroits don't prime themselves well. Most of the guys that worked on a lot of them back in the day had either a little electric fuel pump to hook into the line or else a bulb pump like on an outboard motor. Cook use to have one he carried in his truck. McHugh brothers had an electric one.

Awesome video. When I was working for a Equipment Co. back in the early 80’s. We got a IH cab over with a 8V92. One day the driver was bringing it in the yard and we was just thought he was showing off in reality it was running away. He had a hard time getting it out of gear with the sloppy linkage and thrust against the gears. We tried putting hard cardboard over the air intake, but there was to many leaks in the piping. Lol!! She finally stopped. We think she was running on the oil buildup in the air box. We tore her down only thing we found was she stretched her conecting rods. Put her back together and she ran good till we sold her!! Good luck with that one!! Thank you for sharing!!

That was painful to watch. The most common cause of a runaway 2 stroke Detroit is a stuck injector, as many commenters have already said. But also a bad turbocharger with a leaky seal can cause an engine to runaway on crankcase oil leaking out of the turbo. On these Detroit engines a bad end seal in the blower rotors can also leak enough engine oil to cause a runaway, but that is very rare.

Detroits can run at ridiculously high RPMs, so you probably didn’t damage it. I would yank the injectors and get them rebuilt. I’ve seen runaways before, and they are scary!

Só corta a linha de diesel ou usar a parada de emergência no Blower. Tem q dar a partida com a tampa de válvulas aberta, se dispara Isa a mão na cremalheira.🐐😂

Pull the valve covers and put a pair of vise grips on the fuel rack and work it back and forward to make sure it isn't stuck in the full throttle position the gas pedal doesn't mean a damn thing in a 8v 2 stroke.
