When Algae Met Fungi: A lichen love story

I read that nearly all lichens are edible except for ones like the wolf lichen and one other one. I am into survival learning,and read about this. Ofcourse you have to cook them in a boiling pot that includes some wood ashes to neutralize the acids in lichen. My only problem is trying to distinguish lichen from crust like fungus.
