Can you please explain what you mean when you say defend? Am I just sending troops to stop the invasion?

I think in that case defends, means, don't waste|send any troops, keep your number as high as possible, be inactive VS big maybe, only allow small send to super weak enemies if more early game. Late game defending, mostly with teams, means you accept taking on a role of attacker or "wall". CG was clearly the attacker and the other the wall, yet the wall wasted his troops.
