I never really understood this saying. Humans are part of nature, we aren't aliens. Everything is nature. There is no "not messing with it". I can appreciate it trying to say "don't tempt things far more powerful than yourself" but that goes for everything. Whether it's a giant salt water crocodile or heavy machinery. It was really a dumb way to confront them. It was a waste of ammunition. As any hunter can tell you, most animals know you're there before they see you. A better tactic would have been to use long-range rifles picking a few off at a time, follow them, and pick off more when they settle.
