Archers are just the ranged class. So long as you attack from a distance, you're an Archer. You could throw cars at people, and you'd still count as an Archer. I myself am waiting for Archer that attacks by throwing insults.

Now, I can offer an easy explanation for Fujino. She's an archer because her Mystic Eyes of Distortion can be considered Psychic Powers by how they bend objects as large as a bridge. And when you have projectile weapons not originated from mana, you qualify as an Archer instead of a Caster.

It's worth noting that the in-universe definition from the 2010 Material Book is not at all based around a bow. They just define it as having projectile weapons or abilities. They have technically been consistent with their strange definition... I think Nasu liked the idea of having an unorthodox Archer to surprise people and establish that things could be different than it is described in FSN and forgot that EMIYA/Gilgamesh were meant to be unorthodox not the norm. But they at least changed the definition to just make the class look poorly titled instead of outright wrong. Knight of the Bow. A class that excels in possessing powerful Noble Phantasms. The qualifying condition is not attributes, but the possession of powerful projectile weapons or special abilities related to projectile weapons. Highly effective as scouts. They have not only the Magic Resistance ability of the Knight Classes, but also the class ability of Independent Action.

The reason that Tesla is not a Caster is that he would see this as an insult. He isn’t using magic but SCIENCE. In his NP’s voiceline, he asks the gods to go to sleep and let the humans do their things. So I think he may have some disdain for magic. It’s also in contrast to Edison who knew personally a magic user when alive (Helena), and doesn’t mind using magic to get an edge over Tesla, even fusing with the american presidents of the past.

Don’t get me wrong I recognize how much type-moon has influenced other media with its creativity. I even have some examples listed out in the description of my fate power scaling playlist. But we gotta talk, I can’t be the only 1 who’s noticed we lost the spark somewhere along the way. Because I might just drop this franchise if I see another character fight with chains & fire projectiles from behind them. Why do so many characters have to fight like Gilgamesh even outside the archer class, I get it we got 300+ servants but something has to change. Like the mordred vs semi ramis fight especially had me heated. Not only because it’s an example of how great previous fights between better written characters like Gil & iskandar could have been. It’s also just foreshadowing for what future fights will look like between characters with the same fighting styles. Which don’t look good considering how lazy fgo fights have been adapted imo

I believe Gilgamesh being an Archer is a hold-over from Nasu's original concept for Fate. Prototype Gil had a set of twin blades that were actually a long-bow when combined at the hilt, which could fire an NP in the form of an arrow that contained the very concept of mythical flood described in the Epic of Gilgamesh -- which you can see in the brief animation Type-Moon released. That said, FSN Gil can likely be any Class and remain reasonably the same - using his treasury via Gate of Babylon - with the exception of Caster. As his Caster-self was willing to deplete his treasury to protect his people rather than existing as a monument to his own ego.

Let's not forget the following Servants being summoned as Archers but make us asked "Why are you an Archer?": *Sei Shonagon* - Yeets items in Stages 1 & 2 but uses her literature as projectiles in Stage 3. *David* - fights with a staff but uses a slingshot as his NP 'cuz he's known for slaying Goliath. *Santa Altera* - Fights with a modified Photon Ray, presents, and sheep. *Ptolemaios/Ptolemy* - Uses a lancer to fight and shoot beams in his younger form while his older self uses spells to shoot projectiles and does some melee attacks from swinging a big sword to a few energy-enhanced punches.

The Archer class was a parody since the beginning. Not counting the Prototype Servants, the first two Archer servants of the franchise preferred to throw weapons than using actual arrows. When you think of Emiya or Gilgamesh you think of dual swords and a drill sword, or their NPs which never display any bow.
