The best jump scare I've seen is from the blood testing scene in John Carpenter's The Thing. You know the Thing is violent, you know something bad will happen, you know the blood test will reveal the monster... But nobody expects the blood to screech. Not only is the "scare chord" a part of the world, but it works because the Thing is so alien that *of course* its blood can scream. They even set up the fact that each part of it can act as its own independent being.

I feel that "The Thing" handles jump scares very well. They are some of my favorites because they all have a reason. Any one could be infected at anytime always preparing you for the jump scare, but even when some of the tension is dropped through a reveal, you know that it is still out there, so the tension never seems to drop.

I remember when i saw the 2 jumpscares at the beginning of "the ring". I was way too young but curious because my father told me not to watch the movie. I think i'd seen saw at this point but that was with my uncle and i was kinda used to gore. But those distorted faces at the beginning made me abandoning the movie instantly. This also was the first and last time i had immediate nightmares after watching a horror movie.

The best jumpscare I've ever experienced wasn't in a horror movie. It was in Fallout: New Vegas's Dead Money expansion pack, and it was entirely unscripted. I had just broken into the Sierra Madre Casino, the supposed final challenge of the expansion. You are warned that the casino uses security holograms (sounds dumb writing it out just now) to patrol it's halls, and to steer clear of them since they're invincible and will trigger security systems. I was in the upper floors scavenging for anything that wasn't nailed down, because I just have to steal everything in these kinds of games, when I turned around...and there she was. A hologram of a woman in a flowing dress, standing right behind me, changing colors from a calm blue to a blood red. My brain had maybe a quarter of a second to recognize what I was even looking at before she screamed. I did not know the holograms screamed. I was so startled I nearly fell out of my chair.

I have to pause the video to comment because it was a super interesting experience. The anticipated jumpscare got me because as I stared, knowing it would come, I felt the tension rise and genuinely jumped. The surprised jumpscare with smile dog didn't scare me at all because I didn't have time to spook myself.

Some of my favorite jumpscares are the locker jumpscare from the first Silent Hill game, and the blood test jumpscare from The Thing. The locker jumpscare because it's one of the few times I've ever seen a fake-out jumpscare with actual payoff later on because it lulls you into a false sense of security for the second time it happens (only to catch you off guard with something a lot scarier than a cat), and the blood test jumpscare because of how well it's built up and how teeth-clenchingly tense that build up makes you. Also because of how amazing the payoff of that particular jumpscare is. I will never get tired of that movie.

First time blind playing through Resident Evil 8, the entire house Beneviento segment is such a good buildup to a great scare. I don't wanna spoil, but until this point, the game had been a tense and creepy, but a little cheesy, action focused experience. When you realize your limitations in this segment, and when you notice there are hints that you'll need to hide, suddenly you have to shift your mindset. You're not able to shoot whatever is coming, whenever it comes, and it slowly builds to that point, surprising you in such a great way when you think you're nearly free.

The first scare at the beginning of Hereditary, when the mother looks into the gloom and sees the outline of her own late mother. Its just silent, but she sees it, and we see it. And surely it CAN'T be there... her breathing picks up and its just dreadful. Absolutely perfect
@EvilCreampuff2 жыл бұрын
I feel like Smile (2022) handled both surprise and expected jumpscares very well. The tension is absolutely relentless throughout and every scare is earned and builds on itself. That movie is all around super effective, despite using formulas and plot devices we've seen countless times. Turns out that groundbreaking originality isn't necessary for a good horror movie... not when you've mastered the classic.

The Mulholland Dr jump scare with the hobo is def one that I'll never forget. I pretty much reacted the way the character does lol. My favourite jump scare is in The Exorcist 3. The hospital night shift corridor scene. Its perfectly built up and executed, using zoom and sound perfectly.
@overlord73103 жыл бұрын
The 'Scream-THUMP' from the first Paranormal Activity stands out in my memory as a good jump-scare, particularly as one that actually got me. Something sudden and unexpected after like a full minute of tension building, besides the film just generally spending most of its runtime maintaining tension.

My scare tolerance is extremely low. I can easily be frigthened by any face-like shape with black eyes. That said, my favourite scares come from the FEAR 1 game, for a number of reasons. First, the game builds up gloomy atmosphere with its level design: water processing plant, condemned city block, empty offices at night. Second, the game has very dark story overall. Third, the composer, Nathan Grigg, came up with some highly exotic, unsettling sound for the music. And fourth, the gam actually trains you like a pavlovian dog to become frightened once you hear a very specific sound - the static. Oohhhh man, that game was brutal.

I love the Chernobyl diaries. Although the movie does have some cheap tropes, like the bear scene and some others, the overall buildup is really good, and instead of constant jumpscares, in the end it is constant fear. The main characters are being chased, and they know that they must keep running to escape, but they can't. Easily my favorite horror movie.

my favorite types of jumpscares are probably the most relatable ones, at least for me youre just walking absolutely no music at all, then you turn the corner and get jumpscared, freak out for a split second while not making any noise and quickly walk out of there
@Rubashow Жыл бұрын
To me the best jumpscare is in Alien, when Dallas is ambushed in the vents. It builds tension as it picks up speed. Skerrit plays this wonderful. He stays calm but you can see the stress rising in him. There is the added element of the beeping motion tracker that beeps faster like a count down. It's in a dark and claustrophobic place. It's so insanely intense. I've seen this movie 6-7 times and each time watching it grips me.

Know the Dark Pictures Anthology? Those games have some of my least favorite jumpscares. They are almost always accompanied by a loud noise and more than half the time aren't even something scary. It's just a loud noise placed over things like animals appearing into the frame or objects falling. They are games, but still have that annoying feeling because A, there is nothing you have to do after the jumpscare because B, it wasn't even scary. The same game also has one of my favorite scares. You're just cassually walking trough a corridor with one of the characters. The game is third person. While the character you're controlling goes trough a door, the camera stays in the corridor for 1 more second and you can see a sailor girl standing in a corner. No noise, no focus on them, no one acknowledges it, but if you see it, it can easily scare you (because the ship is supposed to be abandoned) I'll see if I can link a video Edit: found it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3OliYuCh7Z_gtE

That example at 9:00 wasn't scary at all. Partially because I imagined you might edit Vsauce to pop up and I was giggling too much. Also that I was examining details of the scene and ignoring whatever you said was there. Edit: The next "scare" wasn't scary either. I wasn't mad either, only had a momentary thrill. My favourite "jump scares" are the sudden spooky faces in the game "Afraid of Monsters". They are just some ghostly png faces that appear suddenly and vanish just as swiftly without sound cues. One is shoved into your face while you crawl through a bright light ray, the other is seen popping up in a window while going through an abandoned shack in the nightly woods. In both instances you are neither scared nor startled, but left wondering what you just saw. It strenghtens the gloomy dreamlike atmosphere of this game.

one of my best and worst has to be that from the new chucky film the shot starts out with an open door way and the doll in frame the set is set up so perfect with strange angles as if from another view the music builds theres clear tension as the camera zooms and focuses in slowly and right as the camera gets closer.... someone walks past the door breaking all that tension its so annoying all set up and wasted on a stupid jumpscare that one scene made me despise jumpscars forever

I like the jumpscare in The Haunting Of Hill House the most, where - SPOILERS AHEAD - the sisters Shirley and Theo are having an argument during a car driving scene, when the argument is suddenly broken up by a ghastly appearance of their dead sister Nell, pushing herself between the fight. What I really like about it is that it serves a big narrative purpose & therefore feels totally earned

Have you watched *Sinister?* That movie had jumpscare but they weren't actually jumpscares... It was a build up... A good one. It was built up... Effectively. But it was never released... Even at the end of the movie the build up still remained... So, I quickly started watching the 2n one. It was refreshing seeing something actually good... After so many crappy jumpscare based horror films.
