Had the privilege of meeting Ward not long after he retired. It was a small-time autograph session at a pub in Nashua NH. I was a much larger man at the time, probably 60 pounds heavier and in prime of my life. I’d had a few scuffles in my past and could throw, but I remember shaking his hand and thinking this guy would kick my ass in very short order. Humbling experience. He seemed such a kind gentleman. Anyway, his autographed photo has been on display in the man-cave ever since. ✌️

I remember heading over to a friend's house to watch the first Ward Gatti fight. The plan was simple: drink a couple of beers and watch a (hopefully) good fight. By round 3 or so we knew we were watching history and that these guys were just cut different from the others. We were standing up, screaming at the top of our lungs at all the insane exchanges these guys got into. We were totally blown away, and to this day it's probably the single best sporting event I've ever seen. Absolutely phenomenal - there's just nothing like these two in my book.

The will to "walk through fire", the will to endure any hardship or obstacle without losing the drive to keep trying. Damn fk'n right, it brings a tear to the eye.

@user-sg8kq7ii3y8 ай бұрын
@Jamee-jg7qr I beg to differ. Watch him fight Canelo. Floyd stood in the pocket and controlled the center of the ring. And he forced Canelo to retreat on many, many occasions. Forced him against the ropes and into the corner. And this is against CANELO, a much bigger fighter. On fight night, Floyd weighed 149-lbs. Canelo weighed 164-lbs. Even after breaking his hands, Floyd has enough power to force you to respect him. That is why Canelo could NOT simply walk through Floyd's punches. Watch that fight - you'd think a bull like Canelo would just walk Floyd down. But he could not. He had to respect Floyd's power, even if Floyd isn't known for power. But he has enough power to force fighters to respect it.

Both Gatti & Ward would easily take his power without question, also this is what modern day boxing is lacking, people are too scared to go to war and will happily dance around throwing a couple punches every now and then with 0 plan to actually engage.

@@user-sg8kq7ii3y He is a very sharp, witty fighter, but he rarely stepped inside the ring with a legitimate threat. A threat that would make him not look as good as he always does. I just think he could have fought people in his division and 154 when he had that belt against the likes of Paul Williams, Erislandy Lara. You know fighters that wouod test his true skill. But it is fair that he didn't make those fights because the money would have never been there. For many years the welterweight division had real threats. I just think that floyd has a history of taking fights that he know he can win. And I think that affected his legacy. When he fought Zab Judah, he was tested. When he fought Marcos Maidana, he was truly tested and rightfully won the fight. But in that fight, did you notice how he was struggling to figure it out? He eventually did, which gave me a glimpse of what he is truly capable of. But those fights were never really there. He has big names under his belt, but a lot of those were past their prime or had a style that Mayweather knew how to pick apart. I think a lot of boxing fans don't really honor his legacy, and I think it is because he never made an impression on people all these years. Muhammad Ali is a great example of leaving an everlasting impression in the ring. Years after he is gone he is remembered. Maybe it also didn't help that people didn't really like his personality either, so it harmed what people think of him. It's kind of sad, the reality of his career.

There was less hugging in 3 fights than one round of Haney vs Garcia

Haney will hug all the fight and Gracia will quit after a bodyshot.

I’ll tell you right now it’s probably three of the greatest fights I’ve ever watched and the best part about it. All is I literally have worked at Mickey Ward down at the auditorium for Golden gloves I’ve known for about 12 years now he’s a great man very humble and just gives me goosebumps every time I watch thisboxing will never be like this ever again

I remember watching this live and being amazed at how much each of them could take, and dish out. And also the huge amount of respect they had for each other when it was over.

irish mickey ward had one of the best left hooks to the body ...an all time legendary punch like Tysons uppercut or Fraziers rolling hook

Those were brutal, awesome fights. Maybe the best trilogy ever...in my opinion.

For me its a toss up between Ward v Gatti and Bowe Holyfield ... Ali Frasier was just a bit before my time

The third contest gets me every single time. Gatti throwing his right hand with only his middle & distal parts of his hand while still unable to block is borderline delusional. I wouldn’t ask anyone to go through that war but I’m happy to have witnessed it while it happened

I was a teen when I saw this fight. It will always be the best round of boxing I ever witnessed. Not because of the skill involved, but because of the display of will. I never saw a boxer take so much abuse and refuse to quit. The liver shot would have ended anyone else...but watching gatti get back up and then also have his own flash of offense was arguably the best moment of the human spirit I've ever seen. RIP Warrior
