The best thing about Jim Lampley is that its clearly not for effect, his feelings are real. He did a podcast with Tris Dixon last year, and it took about 20 minutes before you could hear him getting a lump in his throat when talking about people like Roy Jones and George Foreman and Gatti/Ward.

Just incredible sportsmanship, and the best fight trilogy ever. (how did they not show that part in this video of highlights?!?!)

Had the privilege of meeting Ward not long after he retired. It was a small-time autograph session at a pub in Nashua NH. I was a much larger man at the time, probably 60 pounds heavier and in prime of my life. I’d had a few scuffles in my past and could throw, but I remember shaking his hand and thinking this guy would kick my ass in very short order. Humbling experience. He seemed such a kind gentleman. Anyway, his autographed photo has been on display in the man-cave ever since. ✌️

I remember heading over to a friend's house to watch the first Ward Gatti fight. The plan was simple: drink a couple of beers and watch a (hopefully) good fight. By round 3 or so we knew we were watching history and that these guys were just cut different from the others. We were standing up, screaming at the top of our lungs at all the insane exchanges these guys got into. We were totally blown away, and to this day it's probably the single best sporting event I've ever seen. Absolutely phenomenal - there's just nothing like these two in my book.

Such a great, simple display of how impactful the sport can be. Jim wasn't directly involved. None of us were. It was between two individuals. But what was shown in the contest... what was laid bare, in visceral fashion... is what, potentially, ANY individual can be capable of. The will to "walk through fire", the will to endure any hardship or obstacle without losing the drive to keep trying. Damn fk'n right, it brings a tear to the eye.

@@juanaranda2979 Oh, but when a 36-year-old Floyd SMOKED Canelo, people said that "Canelo was too young."🤣 Let me set you straight... NO VERSION OF Gatti would be able to beat any version of Floyd. Even a prime Gatti would have gotten DEMOLISHED by the 36-year-old Floyd that schooled Canelo.
@user-sg8kq7ii3y
@user-sg8kq7ii3y 8 ай бұрын
@Jamee-jg7qr I beg to differ. Watch him fight Canelo. Floyd stood in the pocket and controlled the center of the ring. And he forced Canelo to retreat on many, many occasions. Forced him against the ropes and into the corner. And this is against CANELO, a much bigger fighter. On fight night, Floyd weighed 149-lbs. Canelo weighed 164-lbs. Even after breaking his hands, Floyd has enough power to force you to respect him. That is why Canelo could NOT simply walk through Floyd's punches. Watch that fight - you'd think a bull like Canelo would just walk Floyd down. But he could not. He had to respect Floyd's power, even if Floyd isn't known for power. But he has enough power to force fighters to respect it.

@@user-sg8kq7ii3y Saying Floyd could knock both of therm out really shows how much of a casual you are, Floyd is literally known to have feather fists and no power, he's closer to a volume puncher rather than a power puncher. Both Gatti & Ward would easily take his power without question, also this is what modern day boxing is lacking, people are too scared to go to war and will happily dance around throwing a couple punches every now and then with 0 plan to actually engage.

@@user-sg8kq7ii3y He is a very sharp, witty fighter, but he rarely stepped inside the ring with a legitimate threat. A threat that would make him not look as good as he always does. I just think he could have fought people in his division and 154 when he had that belt against the likes of Paul Williams, Erislandy Lara. You know fighters that wouod test his true skill. But it is fair that he didn't make those fights because the money would have never been there. For many years the welterweight division had real threats. I just think that floyd has a history of taking fights that he know he can win. And I think that affected his legacy. When he fought Zab Judah, he was tested. When he fought Marcos Maidana, he was truly tested and rightfully won the fight. But in that fight, did you notice how he was struggling to figure it out? He eventually did, which gave me a glimpse of what he is truly capable of. But those fights were never really there. He has big names under his belt, but a lot of those were past their prime or had a style that Mayweather knew how to pick apart. I think a lot of boxing fans don't really honor his legacy, and I think it is because he never made an impression on people all these years. Muhammad Ali is a great example of leaving an everlasting impression in the ring. Years after he is gone he is remembered. Maybe it also didn't help that people didn't really like his personality either, so it harmed what people think of him. It's kind of sad, the reality of his career.

If you don’t think this is one of the best fights of all time you don’t know boxing. This is a classic! The main reason for this, if you don’t realize, is that the ref just wouldn’t stop the fight. The ref is the hidden start behind this. He was old school and let them slug it out like real fighters.

Yup! Most people, even boxing fans, never took a good liver shot and have no idea what it does to your body, your breathing, your brain. It's incredible he was able to not only shake it off and get on his feet, but also get right back to the battle with the same intensity. God mode, indeed!
@DILFDylF
@DILFDylF 4 ай бұрын
I've never taken a liver shot, but I think I feel at least a little of what he feels, bc when I feel pain, if it's intense enough, like getting hit or smashing my finger between weights or something, I feel a burning rage that makes the pain completely go away. Clearly an adrenaline release, but his body can obviously crank out adrenaline like no other. Busted liver, broken hand, none of it matters if your body thinks you need to fight to stay alive

I was a teen when I saw this fight. It will always be the best round of boxing I ever witnessed. Not because of the skill involved, but because of the display of will. I never saw a boxer take so much abuse and refuse to quit. The liver shot would have ended anyone else...but watching gatti get back up and then also have his own flash of offense was arguably the best moment of the human spirit I've ever seen. RIP Warrior
