So I'm an Audi mechanic. They took one of these in on trade a couple years ago with 56,220 miles for 16k. I bought it for $18,760. I welded new end tanks on a 4 inch thick mishimoto intercooler core. It was from my sn95 mustang drift car before I went n/a with a 400ci small block ford sprint car engine that makes 840hp. Put larger injectors in, upgraded pressure pump, fiddled with the waste gates, built my own aluminum charge piping and exhaust, tuned it on my buddies dyno with the help of one of my buddies in Deutschland, we got her up to 720 wheel hp and 1204 lb ft. It's a menace to society to be honest. I live in Reno, Nevada so whoever said we didn't get them here is just flat out incorrect. Another thing, I've obviously had the tcu flashed as well but I've got over 100,000 miles and haven't had a single problem.

The Volkswagen Group had the most varied lineup of engines back in the 2000s for both diesel and petrol cars: from inline 3, 4 and 5 cylinder engines to V6, V8, V10 and V12 engines to VR5 and VR6 engines to W8, W12 and W16 engines. There was even a secret prototype W10 engine that was tested in a BMW M5. The only engine configuration they didn't make was an inline 6 cylinder engine because it was not going to fit in their FWD and AWD cars due to the way they package their engines and their AWD systems that require a transaxle to sit directly between the two front wheels.

I had both the Audi A7 biTurbo Diesel and the Audi S7 petrol and after easily tuning the torque to 900nm in the biTDI I actually preferred the diesel. There was something about being able to cruise up a tall incline hill with very little throttle and it didn't even bother dropping down out of 8th gear most of the time, that just felt actually powerful. So I can only imagine what this V12 version was like 😂

I own one. Drive it around 15k kms per year. Currently close to 300k kms. No major issues with it, however a lot of regular maintenance require dropping the engine, which is costly. I will never find another car that is as robust and agile in the same time. Also, the fuel economy is not that bad. Usually, cars with similar specs, but with petrol engines get at least 20-30% more fuel usage. Usually, highway fuel usage is around 12-14 liters/100 km (17-20 mpg).

Today a VW car with more than three engine choices and more than four real buttons per vehicle seems to be forbidden, costsaving for the race to the bottom... Dont even get me started on the UX hell they created for themselfs since the MK8 Golf.... On one hand, a diesel seems to be the logical choice for a big euro SUV, On the other hand, there was no way these big TDI´s would have met modern emissions, the 2.0 TDI had problems with that and got stopped by Dieselgate. Even the A8 lost its V8TDI option in 2020...

Audi should make a diesel road going supercar, or better yet, hyper car. Diesel is world beating, right.

The irony is that diesel is and continues to be cool in the USA. Diesel trucks are tremendously popular in the USA.

I'm looking forward to seeing what darkside developments can get out those engines with it mated to a manual box in their single cab Amarok.

RS6 C6 had the same circumstances around sales and availability. It does also have the same quality feel as the Q7 V12, some tech is shared. Both are future collector cars with low production numbers.

Audi should've put it in a 2500 Truck chassis to compete in the US. Ram is getting that much torque out of a straight 6 and its usable as a truck.
