Boom. After 2.5 years, I finally made a video about Portal. Unfortunately, it's about a minor gripe I have with it. Wall of text inbound, if you want to bother reading it.
My problem with the Portal 2 soundtrack is that a lot of it lacks the hopeless and insignificant feeling that both Portal games provide in spades*.
*well, maybe 1 more than 2, but 2 still has plenty of it.
I don’t know how well I can explain this. Portal 1’s soundtrack feels more self-reflective and philosophical, whereas Portal 2’s is more on-the-fly, in-your-face, epic dramatic cinematic orchestra (which isn't shallow if it's done right). It just doesn’t connect with me as much as Portal 1. It doesn’t immerse me in the game as much as Portal 1.
I know it sounds like I hate Portal 2 and its soundtrack. I don’t. It definitely has its immersive moments. However, I feel like most of it would better fit a TV series with more fleshed-out main protagonist than a video game with a silent protagonist meant to completely immerse you in the atmosphere.
What was the point of this essay? Well, if there’s any band that fits Portal 2’s sci-fi motif as well as being immersive, it’s Autechre! Thus, I decided to not replace a track from Portal 2 (because it’s a complicated process compared to Half-Life 2), but create a montage of scenes that I think would fit the track nicely. Hopefully you enjoy it, but then again, I can’t control others’ opinions. Oh well.
