the footwork is phenomenal - but the key point everyone seems to forget is - the base is not always in the middle of the court. Your base changes every time based on your own recovery, the shot you played, and when your opponent plays their shot. This is what he has mastered and his level of dedication is far greater then any other player If you see after he won the 2008 olympics - he does a salute. Why? He went enlisted himself in the national army to get himself physically fit for the tournament. He beat what many people called the 'best player' (LCW - who was really number 2 in the world all along)with ease

I think in the beginning of his badminton career, Lin Dan also used jump pace method. He only walks later because he has truly mastered the fundamental of footwork & therefore, he can always return to the base position no matter how he moves....

If you see lin Dan likes to shuffle a lot while other players prefer to lunge out or run sometimes. It just really shows how he has mastered rythm and timing. I also noticed that he tends to be harder to play because he is left handed so it is easier for him to use his method

In my opinion, instead of "walk", I think the way he move is jump with one feet, which means there is one step ahead when he react the ball, whereas there is only half step for "jump". In fact, in tennis, we also have choices for "one feet jump" or "jump". Lol my English sucks I am still learning.

why Lin Dan can just walk in doing footwork, because his Power push the shuttle to the rear end of the court, so he has enough time comeback to centre with walk, the key point of lin dan strength is HE CAN PLACE THE SHUTTLE TO THE BACK LINE COURT, ITS MAKES OPPONENT VERY DIFFICULT TO ATTACK, u can see lin dan placing is so accurate, always touch the back end line court, this give u time to reposition to the centre with walk

This is where the art of capture the moment of players. Showing Lin Dan walks on the safe shots. But other players on the shots of not making good safe shot. I believe all players not just high levels, when they make a good safe shots the walk will always follow. That just come in natural. Don't start a myth.

Its called shuffling back to base, very similar to horse galloping. We use this when we want to be playing at a fast pace, but when you're trying to play slow and relaxed, you try not to use this and instead want to be using what Lin Dan is using which is the most basic footwork that is natural to how we move. This footwork is taught mostly to kids because their legs aren't strong enough to use the shuffle footwork. For Lin Dan to revert to using the "natural steps" footwork though, a lot is at play. First, he's pacing the game very well. He knows what shots to play to take away tempo from what the opponent wants. Two, he knows how to place strategically that minimizes the opponent's attacking option, thus making it easier for him to defend. Three, his reaction time and physical speed incase things go wrong is just above normal, thus he can still get away with his laid back playstyle.

Lin Dan uses no jump pace in current years when he saves energy to play longer at the price of less attack than before. Before changing his style in 2013 he jumped harder and further than most of the others, especially for the Olympic Final 2008. Also, his master skill is based on his smooth and fast pace. No one can make a good shot when he or she barely reaches the shuttle. Otherwise, most of the professionals can make that good shots if just standing there to catch. So the difference is the smooth and effective pace, which although looks slow, is actually very fast. I have an idea on his skill, which also based on the pace. After getting a good control on the shuttle, he will make a shot that most difficult to the opponent, loke the furthest point or the direction that requires extra body turning. Especially when he played with Lee Chong Wei in Rio, once Lee has turned a little bit to one corner of the backfield preparing for smash, he always lifted or pushed to the other corner.

😍😍😍First, i would like to thank you for your comment here. Second, i so agree with you about the effective pace of LIN DAN movement that you said. Like you said LIN DAN is really fast because of his special footwork. I regconise that his footwork doesn't change much through years. What changes much is his playing style. To prove that, you could watch this video about LIN DAN's match VS TAUFIK in 2007. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pafKZauajsiZgbs
@damingding2983
@damingding2983 5 жыл бұрын
@@vhbadminton-savingtimebadm1192 Thx for replying and sharing the video. But I don't think that is a good example for our topic. In that game he was so controlled by Taufik that there was barely any chance to give a up-hand shot in the backfield except for a few low, up-hand, defensive clear. In a few cases when he could attack with quick smash, he jumped. A good example for my point is Olympic Final 2008 in which he got so many chances to give sudden attack to Lee Chong Wei. Then he jumped, much faster and further than Lee had expected. Even around 2011-103, Lin still jumped. Otherwise, there was no way to catch so many chances to smash. In another point of view, there may be only two reasons for Lin Dan to get more chances than others to give sudden attack/smash. (1) He has longer legs, or (2) he made bigger steps, mostly by jump.
@damingding2983
@damingding2983 5 жыл бұрын
@@vhbadminton-savingtimebadm1192 Check 5:30. The position Lin Dan jumped was much in front of where he smashed. That is the jump pace. Without it, he wouldn't give such attack, which was one of his best advantage before 2014.

Could agree with most things, but you can only play deceptive shots IF you get to the shuttle early AND have the confidence so I still think it's down to the footwork. I play badminton myself and trick shots are easy to perform on players you are clearly a grade over but impossible to pull off when you are the underdog. I think his reading his opponent's racquet movement is the key or he just has the wits for this sport.

Yes he walks more often than not. But I think for anyone, including Lin Dan, if you do an overhead cross court drop shot, it’s more natural to use the jump pace footwork because the bounce in that footwork allows you to cover the straight return to the net quicker.

Sorry but I have a point to point out, which is at 4:19, chou tien chen is using the walking footwork also. from the video where you show they use the jump pace is because they were either slicing or half smash, that is why they have to use the jump pace to get back quickly but when they clear they will also sometimes walk back to the center of the court. The basics of the games are still the same, you mostly come to center a bit slowly to have the rhythm, then just push off using the split step. He is still using the same basics, but now due to his age and agility, all his explosiveness is not at the same level as in Olympics! That's where the changes in footwork came in.
@vhbadminton-savingtimebadm1192

👍👍👍You're right about the basic rules my friend. But his style of footwork is a bit different from the new footwork of now young badminton players like Kento Momota or Viktor Axelsen and so on. The most outstanding is the new footwork prefers the jump back paces to run back paces. That's why Lin Dan could make his game look easy. You can watch Lin Dan's footwork in 2007 here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pafKZauajsiZgbs 😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉

your conclusion is wrong, cause walking back To the base position only happens when lin dan plays deep clear. he also jumps back To base when plays drop or smash shot, like other players in the video.

I think that the uploader was trying to stress that Lin Dan's walk in the court(back to the base position) most of the time, where most players did was jump back pace. whether smashes, drop or clear, he walk most of the times in his plays. Unless when he's in trouble, he'll be forced to use jump pace footwork. Probably not many players play style are like Lin Dan, relaxing and the smooth pace is just nice to watch him play. But its quite disappointing to watch him play now as he seems to have slowed down in his play. Let's hope he can win another big title before his official retirement. :D

@@kingj5703 what i mean is that walking or jumping back depends on what kind of shot is played and whether you are in initiative or passivity while playing this shot, it is the same for everyplayer.

Well. His foot work don't have unnecessary things, that is what makes it looks much easier. It is mainly because he reads his opponents well than others and move accordingly. That is the key to his play.

His mind is much clever than the other player since he was in the game for very long or it's just that he is a genius in this game.... He knows what his opponent would probably do so he didn't waste his energy by moving too much..... As we can see that LD Never really look that tired in a game..... He knows how to conserve his energy
@huaxzhang
@huaxzhang 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I agree with your analysis on footwork. He played a high clear, after which he (and anyone) could choose to walk back to the base. If it's faster, more attacking shots, recovery would need to be faster. In those cases, he chose to use running steps, but other players chose shuffle/hopping. I'm not sure that he's a better player because of this, or despite of this.
@vhbadminton-savingtimebadm1192
@vhbadminton-savingtimebadm1192 5 жыл бұрын
He chose to use running steps like you said. And that running steps back to the center position really makes his footwork become smoothier. More over running step can save much energy than jumping back to the center. 😊😊😊😊😊

Badminton is so easy for lin dan is jsut because he forces his opponent to play less offensive shots and to make mistakes by PLAYING WISE SHOTS . he plays just in the GAP and never near his opponent ,that makes opponent to play wrong and often lin DAN just stays in one side of he court while his opponent is running all around the corners of court . He Does it just by PLAYING WISELY which majority of players lack like LEE CHONG WEI .LIN DAN Sticks to this strategy and always win the rally .

In footwork of Lindan you showed he hit all clears why would one jump back when he has time. I am sure he will too do jump back footwork if he hits fast shots because it's not possible to walk when you hit smash one will not have that much time. First analysis is kind of misleading.

TheLearningvideo agree.. Lin Dan is a master of setting the tempo. Hitting the shuttle at its highest position to increase pace, hitting it at a lower position to decrease the pace, lob, drop shot, etc.. This way, he does not need to jump every time and can save some energy by walking.

You are slightly incorrect in your analysis ,Due to becoming less agile,of course he is getting older, he just preferred to walk instead of jump back pace movement to save energy, evidently said by looking at his recent losses even against unseeded players.Otherwise,if you look at his earlier matches he is more vigour and stimulated in his movements.In my opinion ,in case of leg movement,Chen Long is the best ,looking more swift and stable.Although Lin Dan is GOAT because of his relentless calm and composureness during tough times in matches , which matters a lot in International arena.

the foot work part is not true, he is playing passively, when he hit the shuttle, the shuttle is slight behind him, thats why just need to walk back to the center of the court If he is playing "attack", the shuttle will be in front of him, then he need more energy to get back to the center
