I feel like the problem is, that the umpires are too scared to admit that they made a mistake. It's like when you're being sued and your lawyer tells you not to admit to any crimes lol but also, bwf should allow for instant video review for the umpire with referees like in soccer, everyone makes mistakes, we're human.
@ivankjt2 жыл бұрын
In the BWF handbook for umpires, it is stated that once a call has been made, the umpire HAS to stand by their decision. Admitting a mistake after a call has been made is not a good look for BWF / the umpire so this is why we never see umpires do this. I agree with what you said, the solution to this is to enforce slow-mo video reviews with the referee and for the overturn of an umpire's decision to be allowed whenever a wrong call is made.
@themasterstringer2 жыл бұрын
@@ivankjt yea it's not the umpires, some rules needs to be updated and/or amended. I remember seeing umpire giving a yellow card to a player after they just finished a super long rally and both players were still very much out of breath. There are lots of types of the error made by the umpires in fact, and most of them are caused by the 'eye-judge': they won't use the replay of the point to help, or won't even use any high tech like radar in the case of 'service too high'. Fix would seem to be to have all the players that have issues with the umpiring immediately send a complaint off to the governing body after the match. And then have those complaints reviewed every 3 months or so in a transparent manner that the public can look in where the umpires have to defend their calls. Some might be bad calls, some just might be errors due to being tired and what not, but there will be some that just cannot be defended. Have a X strikes and you are out rule where they get disbarred from judging competitions if they are found to have done a poor job. And if a certain nation/group consistently seem to be giving biased calls have measures in place to limit the number of umpires that nation/group can nominate for international competitions. The most important factor being the public should be able to review the 'judging' of the umpire calls just as easily they can watch the match the call took place in.
@pauldodd21202 жыл бұрын
Probably not worth the effort. Badminton umpires are assessed at various stages by assessors. For semi finals and finals the referee will also usually choose umpires, looking at their performance. Split second decisions at the net are often very difficult - remember that you actually see only about 2 degrees at any one instant, not the 180 degree illusion. Any umpire who consistently favoured one country or player would soon get reported, and not selected.

VA returned SYQs kill at the front, but from the replay, it can be seen that VAs racquet goes under the net while the shuttle is still in play when he returns that kill. Ie, his racket crossed the net while the shuttle was in SYQs side of the court. Hence a fault. I'm assuming this is the case since crossing the net can be either be your racket going above or under. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this. And also, can't be entirely sure why the umpire faulted VA since the audio is inaudible. But assuming I'm right about the rules regarding the racket crossing the net, that's the only justifiable reason I can see how the umpire faulted VA.

i was really mad watching the hongkong open final ginting vs lee live. it should be point for ginting, beautiful play at critical point yet it doesn't matter in the eye of wrong judgement by the umpire.

It's even more ridiculous when the other player knows they did wrong yet they don't want to admit like that vittingus and Lee match ,I think vitti knows well what he did

We need more players like Victor who can maintain their honesty and are more human than just being a player. Because today you might get lucky winning a point but the next time you can be the victim of the same.
@DømīnïkLx12 жыл бұрын
Well yes, but on the other hand he could have just intervened with the umpire’s decision directly. Because at the end Chou gained a point (rightfully) but Viktor also and not rightfully

I agree that in most cases the umpire were ridiculous at best, however: in #6 Axelsen did indeed touch the net - just not at the top, but at the bottom with his shirt (check that the bottom of the net moves at 4:03 - 4:05 and it can be seen a tiny bit at 4:11-4:39 from the replays). I admit it is tough to see, but the call was correct (btw, I checked, according to BWF rule 13.4.1 no part of the net may be touched) What I am wondering is why there is no option to challenge faults at the net. 1-2 high speed cameras are not much of a problem. Just the same for timing of the challenge. There is live broadcasting, why not use it? Even the most well-meaning umpire can get stuff wrong (in #4 f.ex. it was hard to determine if the shuttle hat indeed crossed the net fully. The human eye only recognises around 25 pictures per second. It does make sense that the umpire might have seen it "hit before it crossed completely")

These umpires should have an eye test before qualifying to be on stage.

I think Vittinghus is a bit rude to Lee Chuek Yiu. Seems like he wants to take revenge for Ginting. However, Vittinghus did have a fault. He should not punish others as he made a mistake?

It's high time there should be some amendments in the rules in such instances and the power to strip down these kind of umpires who thinks they have the absolute power.
@andrewcannon5872 жыл бұрын
the big problem here is BWF hire umpires with no badminton experience nor play badminton before. It's like hiring a worker with NO prior experience on the subject and applying bwf rule book with their inept eyesight and slow mental processing power. Even if they found out to be wrong, saving face is job #1.

The first one. What reason can be so logical to let the umpire to reject their request? I dont see it contradicting any rules. Anyone who knows, please tell me.

BWF may consider 2 umpire approach like basketball or a virtual automated referee (VAR) like football..?

regarding the match Axelsen vs Shi yuqi Axelsen is definitely fault 1. His racket over the net 2. His shoulder touched the net 4:13

For some of the cases in this video, it's true, players racquet didn't touch the net, however the racquet crossed over to opponents side of the court. That's is also not allowed.
@garrichf2 жыл бұрын
Based on what i know it is allowed as long you hit the shuttle after it has crossed the net.
@craw1er2 жыл бұрын
@@garrichf oh I didn't know that, I've been playing badminton for nearly 30 yrs but I've always assumed that it's as simple as racquet can't cross over to opponents side of the net lol. Well, we continue learning until we die 😬

The BWF should allow the coach a "one-time" chance to challenge a call by the line judge or umpire like in NFL (National Football League).

Badminton should have VR Challenges like in Football where camera replay will display on large screen like CTC vs Anderson game.

I know umpires can make mistakes or not see all faults, but when its obvious and dont make the right call should be banned from being an umpire. Or umpires should be corrected by referees who are able to watch instant replays
@nuri49062 жыл бұрын
Afterall, umpire/referee and judges are only human which possible to make any mistake.. i think BWF need to consider if player dissatisfied with the umpire/referee (because repetition of silly mistakes) they can make suggestion to change the person.. because if this happen in urgent moment such as critical point, sometimes it becomes not fair.. so the player also should have the chance to challenge the umpire/referee..

On the clip about Antonsen at 5:00, he touched the ball over the net on his opponents side, so that would've been a fault. The initial hit didn't start on his side of the net. Interesting.
@Jerry-mp2xx2 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why it called fault when it clearly antonsen hit the shuttle on opponent side. As I know to perform net kill, the shuttle must reach at antonsen side first before he can hit the shuttle is it?
