What made "Planet of the Bass" work is that it tapped into a very true issue of some Eurodance productions having limited conversational and colloquial English. Masterboy is an example of this--a lot of the lyrics were directly translated from German and so there lyrics that are technically accurate in English it just sounds wonky because it isn't how an English-speaking person would talk.

I miss Eurodance so much! It still exists, but a lot of artists/groups/bands who made the music just don't make that music anymore, or they disbanded.

the huggies ad tiktok song really is just another way for these family bloggers to exploit their kids even more?? so weird tbh
@jeizdolok
@jeizdolok 10 ай бұрын
Not that I want to encourage exploiting children AT ALL, but from a marketing perspective, the song would have been so much more successful if it had included instructions. Eg old huggies off, off, off, give it a wipe, wipe, wipe, get out a fresh, fresh, fresh, huggie 'n put it on, on, on Sooo so so lame but get my drift? They could have made a song similar to the elf one, and provided directions to people to use the audio (including buying multiple huggies branded products to follow said directions) But in saying that, I also hate the idea of companies encouraging people to exploit a baby's changing time for content. I just have a really creative marketing brain 😅

The e.l.f. song may have gotten a lot of organic use, but that doesn't mean it was an effective ad campaign. If most people hearing it didn't know it was an ad for e.l.f, it was a failure. An ad has to get the brand or product in people's heads, and that's impossible if the ad isn't even associated with the brand. So did they write a good song? Sure. But did they succeed as marketers? Not really. The ideal ad song is probably like the Chance the Rapper/Starbucks one. People knew what it was an ad for and it got people talking. No publicity is bad publicity, after all.

I think it worked bc they wanted to create a tiktok trend centered around makeup, and that happened. Elf will always make cameos in makeup trends bc they offer affordable counterparts to expensive products, and they work. They just kindof manually started a trend that would benefit them. As a side, I always thought of e.l.f. when I heard the song bc ik what the name stood for, but I just thought it was weird they did the song in the same order. 😭

If we're the one ″s*xualising″ it, what′s the logic behind us telling you to stop. Rudolph the red nosed reindeer was invented by the department store Montgomery Ward. The character literally did not exist prior to that ad. And the way U.S. Americans view/present Santa (the red outfit etc) came from Coke. Obviously built on top of all kinds of existing folklore, but that jolly red suited guy we all picture was made for a Coke ad. Which was also tied into patriotism.

Part of the problem with Tik Tok is that the advertisement and the entertainment are so far overlapped. This isn't anything new, but the short-form, scroll medium of TT makes it even harder to identify, especially when something goes "viral" and there are a million different takes on the theme.

@@aphroditestan "Overlap", as in occupying the same space. "harder to identify" as in less obvious that a product is being sold, as the presentation is buried in the framework of "entertainment". Think of cartoons in the 1980's being created solely to sell the toys, ie: He-Man and Care Bears.

The use of Eurodance due to Planet of the Bass is so bad bc PB came from an authentic place of being someone who understands the context and content of it -for example the “tell the world stop the war” line being because most Eurodance was produced in the cold war. The two flaws here are they writing it for something a eurodance song would never be for. Fallon’s song was about the superbowl or whatever but Europe doesn’t have the superbowl. And the understanding of the genre for both of these is just techno with either an eastern european or Scandinavian accent.

i thought i was the only one who had a problem with the baby commercial since literally no one was talking about it, and i first saw it months ago. i thought i was in a dystopian, i scoffed at the idea that they let this pass. i tried to block it when i saw it on Pinterest and KZbin, but it kept popping up, i even reported it. glad it's clearly a problem with other people, as i feel like this is one of the things we can all agree is majorly creepy. seriously, it freaked me out in a way i can't describe. sheesh, it gives me chills just thinking about it. i mean, gosh, how tone deaf and immoral do you have to be to produce that? there's no way around it. that's just blatant exploitation of children. in any case, it's still just weird, like very off-putting and awkward. i couldn't stop thinking "why do this? there's definitely more effective and moral ways of advertising diapers, this is more than just pushing it."

honestly i think at this point business execs Are thinking deeper than 'whats viral? lets just recreate that!' especially as more young people start to join marketing and consulting firms. brands recognize that absurdity sells on tiktok - i think huggies knew their song was weird and offputting and still released it hoping creators would make videos about it like this one. maybe it wont sell more huggies at first but brands know that any mental space they occupy in consumers minds is better than nothing. at the same time the thing you mentioned about doja cats campign being 'honest, self-aware, and authentic' is SO interesting because we do crave authenticity in our brands but its becoming more and more difficult to discern whats genuine and whats an ad. its the same reason why ive alays had a problem with 'quirky brand twitter' like Wendys - at the end of the day the only thing business execs want is to make more profit, but any means necessary. if the current trend is 'genuine, self-aware, sassy humour' then they'll do whatever they can to capitalize on that. brands are not our friends

The desperation and second-hand embarrassment is so palpable that it's going to haunt my dreams. Why can't Huggies just find some weird but catchy song that no one's ever heard and put it under a Huggies ad? Or they could find some tiktok parents who already use their diapers and pay them to make an ad/tiktok. They could basically do whatever they wanted as long as A. their babies were wearing their diapers and B. the weird/catchy song was playing (plus they would throw in a years supply of diapers). The song would eventually find its way to non diaper related tiktoks, but people would still be reminded of Huggies in the back of their minds.

butts aren't inherently sexual but i feel like you don't need to be a pr expert to realize that "not inherently sexual" =/= "not frequently sexualized" and avoid talking about children in a way that is focused on something that is frequently sexualized. it's reminded me of how my grandma doesn't see an issue with talking about how my cat has "sexy kitty legs" because she "doesn't mean it like *that*, you just can't take a joke" even though we both know what sexy usually means. most songs about butts are sexual, it seems like common sense to not write a song about babies' butts, and intent in writing typically dies with the author. overall horrendous move they should fire their pr team

“Have You Tried Wheaties” in the 1920s was the first recorded jingle for radio. But you can find examples of jingles from the 19th century that would be sung on the street. Kind of evolves out of the town crier in early modern Europe.

Hopefully these are simply the new versions of jingles, and the people making them aren't trying to make a name for themselves as a "real artist." Remember when "selling out" was having your song played on the radio by way of payola?

This might be a hot take but the Doja video to me came across as like... Entitled? Here she is, about to make hundreds of thousands of dollars making a "jingle" for a taco bell ad, and she has the nerve to act "too good" for it. Like, im sure having to make ads is cringey, possibly embarrassing, but you agreed to do the shit at the end of the day, no one's forcing you.

The Huggies ads aren’t just on tik tok and KZbin, the other day I was casually watching tv and a different (albeit still disgusting) ad with the same song played. If anything, it was MORE predatory and creepy than the tik tok ad considering it had close up of a baby’s butt…

Speaking of commercial songs, there's this theme park in Poland called energylandia and close to the enter everything that's played from the speakers are just cringey commercial songs (the fact that these were in the style of kids' songs just made it worse, even though most of the stuff in the park is a bit too extreme for kids). I remember when I had to wait there while visiting the park listening to these made me cringe in levels I didn't even think were possible

Hey!!! Fun fact: McDonald’s sprite is scientifically engineered to actually work well with their fries compared to any other soda! And my dad was actually a technician who worked on said machines!)

I think Doja Cat must've had some part in that, it's very much her brand and she is a marketing GENIUS she knows exactly how to market what people want by being contrary. She's very culturally aware and always has been even when she was posting Acapellas about her mom finding her vibrator under her bed
