Our pup is raised with both his parents. Our neighbors dog is a close friend and would play with Audrey, the Dame, daily. For three months now, Audrey and Bailey haven't played...And now my pup is barking at the neighbors dog. I can't wait to have them all together.

I was very firmly told by my puppy's rescue to not let her out of the yard for walks and keep her in her "home" environment until fully vaccinated because Parvo is so prevalent this year. We're 1st time puppy parents and we have quite a few friends with dogs that we want to ensure she socializes with. I am glad I came across this video, I feel much more at ease with bringing her with me to work daily since she's still so young, and socializing her with several different humans.

The concequences of undersocializng a pup far outway the potential risk of infection. You can bring your dog outside and expose them safely. Our students love to do this at parking lots!

Slow and positive exposure will be key. If your pup is afraid or uninterested, remember not to push him past his comfort zone!

my parents dog got parvovirus, it had the jabs but was due it's booster, after that - several thousands later due to needing to be in intensive care and nearly losing him, there's no way I'm taking my puppy outside before it's fully vaccinated. Parvo is nearly always fatal so can't see it outweighs risk. The dog got it from a field without other dogs around but they can get it from other dogs wee or poo if they smell it. Plus that I live in a city with lots of other dogs around. If you have totally private back yard in a remote area you might be ok keeping it there until fully vaccinated, but a walk and socialising with other dogs I won't be doing with my puppy until its vaccinated fully

Sorry to hear about your parent's dog! We are glad that she's keeping her pup safe. You are right, socialization doesn't have to be with other dogs. Exposing dogs to new things (sights sounds smells textures) during this young age can help set them up for a lifetime of confidence. I am a DVM student and I encourage NOT TAKING YOUR PUP OUTSIDE UNTIL FULLY VACCINATED. Get a new vet?! Fucking for real? What a stupid and ignorant thing to say!! I am treating a 10 week old Puppy who got parvovirus by being outside without its full vaccinations. To the owners knowledge, she tried taking him outside in a field where she thought there were no other animals. Well there is leptospirosis as well but this dog didn’t get that. There are indoor potty replacement pads that you can get your dog cheap!! So he will get used to grass smell feeling. Ugh. So far he’s doing okay but he is still extremely ill. Please just no outside until FULLY VACCINATED. that includes 3 distemper vacs, deworming and 2 lepto vacs and 1 Lyme vac. Puppies get first vacs at 8 weeks.

@@Ilovedogs0204 exactly, i used puppy pads until he had all his vaccines. Straight after he was fully covered he was introduced to all the sights/smells, etc. He's nearly a year old now and fully housed trained so it all worked out fine. Don't think any behaviourists/ youtubers should be advocating to exposing unvaccinated puppies, it's too risky

That's an awesome policy! Unfortunately you still cannot predict the behavior the other dogs may have, so for that reason, we still don't recommend dog parks.

Decompression walks are walks in a quiet, secluded place where your dog can just be a dog. You will have a 25-35 foot leash that is clipped to the back of a harness so your dog has freedom to sniff and run around!

There are several smaller things we need to teach puppy first before you can head out the door and go for a walk. It also sounds like there may be some reinforcement history if she has been pulling or lagging behind for a few months now. Even if your puppy is not yet fully vaccinated, it’s important to take them out for potty breaks and to safely and positively expose them to new things! We strongly recommend you start the socialization and exposure training before your pup has all of their shots. If you wait until after the final round of vaccinations, you have missed out on a critical socialization window that could have a lasting impact on how your dog reacts to new things.
