This is the same guy who talked Reese Witherspoon, who bought the rights to make Gone Girl a film, out of playing the lead. Apparently no one could talk her out of it. Fincher spent a day with Witherspoon, convincing her she was wrong for the role, and in the end, he did it.

Fincher is the director and doesn’t need to justify or explain why it had to be that type of cap. He has a vision and it is his prerogative to bring that to the screen. A film set is a benign dictatorship and that is how it should be.

Why did Fincher want a Yankees cap specifically? a directed reason should be given as you stated. Problem is Affleck vehemently defends New England teams IRL, (Red Socks, Patriots) - hiring him for your film means that you have to be complacent with their private life to a certain degree as well (You want Leo DiCaprio? dont trick a vegan into eating liver on Revenant). Other problem to consider is Fincher is a bit of an atypical director, lest we forget that during Zodiac that Robert Downing Jr. protested Fincher's hundred take per shot methods by pissing in jars around the set. Affleck V Fincher just shows me that they're both just as driven on their points as the other, and Fincher wants 100% control of mise-en-scene, not 99.

I'm fairly certain Fincher was being facetious about the whole thing. There is no way a big production like this with an extremely tight schedule would be shut down multiple days for something so trivial. Simply would never happen. Let alone the production company allowing the director to shit talk the star of the film on the DVD commentary lol.

@hotdogs3535

Fincher wasn’t joking. They didn’t clash on set, as witnessed by many, but refusal to take direction, even in a small instance, must have stayed with Fincher. While Fincher makes more consistently stellar films, Affleck is an Oscar winning director and writer. While nominated, Fincher is not. I think it’s unfair to call him unprofessional. The DP on Gone Girl said that even though Affleck won an Oscar the year before for Argo, he still behaved like a willing student for Fincher in Gone Girl. Also, Jack Nicholson refused to wear a Red Sox hat for Scorsese in The Departed, and said he would only wear a Yankees hat, and it never shut down production. Also, the compromise of wearing a Mets hat is great, because a lot of New Yorkers are big Mets fans. Jon Stewart for example is a New Yorker and a big Mets fan. The rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox is intense for die hard fans. Affleck was probably willing to wear the hat, if it weren’t for the fact that it would upset a lot of his fans. He is right, it would have been a whole thing. I love Fincher, his work is great, but he’s a notorious perfectionist. Affleck even tested this by moving the lens very slightly on set of Gone Girl. Something most wouldn’t have noticed. Again, Affleck wasn’t messing around with camera equipment he didn’t know anything about, since a lot of actors aren’t also Oscar winning directors. However Fincher noticed it immediately. I think Fincher is brilliant. He frequently works with my biggest artistic hero, Trent Reznor. However he gives Trent the space he wants to work on his material. I just think that Fincher doesn’t respect Affleck as much. He was great in Gone Girl. I know a lot of people don’t like Affleck, but he’s more talented than people give him credit for, and I’ve heard he is a nice guy to work with. It’s unfortunate that most great directors are also tyrants on set,(Tarantino, Kubrick, Cameron) with the exception of the Coen brothers.

From what I've read about Fincher he wanted Affleck to wear the Yankees cap on purpose to assert his dominance. So why did Affleck confirm it had happened? In his own words “I said, ‘David, I love you, I would do anything for you,'” Affleck told The New York Times in 2014. “‘But I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can’t. I can’t wear it because it’s going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it. I can’t do it.’ And I couldn’t put it on my head." Now I think Fincher is likely playing up his annoyance over what happened, but I think it definitely happened. I mean, Fincher is a guy who once had Jake Gyllenhaal do a 100 takes of him just answering a phone, so insisting on using a certain prop is in keeping with who he is as a director.

David Fincher, one the greatest directors of our time. Bruh butt chin acting entitled. I would wear a Yankees Dress with that kind of paycheck to pretend...

Listen, man, when Fincher tell you to do something, you do it. He isn't some half assed movie of the week director. Nah. Fincher is the best living director on this planet. The only directors that even come close are Scorsese and Tarantino, but still, I'd rate Fincher the best. I hope to work with him someday, and when he tells me to do something, I'm gonna do it. If he tells me to jump off a cliff, I'm gonna say a prayer to Christ, then off that cliff I'll go. Fincher is the last person on planet earth I'd say no to. Someday I'm gonna get my Navy bootcamp book to him, and when he reads it, I pray to Christ he makes a movie about it, starring me. I had a weird bootcamp experience, and Fincher would direct it better than anybody. Please, God, let me work with Fincher, K, that's all, I'll shut the F up now.

Fincher clearly was also being unprofessional. In fact, more so because he was being indignant about something that couldn't possibly make any real difference to him personally, as it would to Ben who had a long held conviction that he didn't want to compromise. Doesn't matter if one person thinks another person's convictions are silly, it's even sillier to try to shame them for choosing their personal integreity over their professional adaptability. Basically, even though I love Fincher, I'd have given his punk ass some free dental work for badgery over a label that's inconsequential to HIS job of getting the story realized as efficiently as possible! I may smack Fincher FOR Ben sometime just on general principal.

Affleck is not much of an actor. More than a film star. Good Will Hunting and The town was good. That’s about it.

If director want's it you do it. Simple as that. Especially if it's Fincher. But Affleck is an ass, that's not suprising.

A movie, especially during shooting, is about a relationship building between director and actors. Sometimes wins the chief, sometimes the actor, sometimes both. In this case, Affleck’s name was more important for the production than the director - and I Say that loving fincher a work - because he was the leading star that gave Gone Girl a prominent media attention. So he could choose not wearing the 🧢 Considering that the commentary will be in every future disks, Blu-ray or not, I think that’s unprofessional talking about this meaningless case. And I add: that was one of the worst commentary by Fincher and I own all his blurays
