This is the same guy who talked Reese Witherspoon, who bought the rights to make Gone Girl a film, out of playing the lead. Apparently no one could talk her out of it. Fincher spent a day with Witherspoon, convincing her she was wrong for the role, and in the end, he did it.

Fincher is the director and doesn’t need to justify or explain why it had to be that type of cap. He has a vision and it is his prerogative to bring that to the screen. A film set is a benign dictatorship and that is how it should be.

Yeah ! Directors want to visualize their ideas and project their thought process on the screen as same as they thought it should be. That's wouldn't be fair if someone dont listen to director..
@jayfolk4 жыл бұрын
Why did Fincher want a Yankees cap specifically? a directed reason should be given as you stated. Problem is Affleck vehemently defends New England teams IRL, (Red Socks, Patriots) - hiring him for your film means that you have to be complacent with their private life to a certain degree as well (You want Leo DiCaprio? dont trick a vegan into eating liver on Revenant). Other problem to consider is Fincher is a bit of an atypical director, lest we forget that during Zodiac that Robert Downing Jr. protested Fincher's hundred take per shot methods by pissing in jars around the set. Affleck V Fincher just shows me that they're both just as driven on their points as the other, and Fincher wants 100% control of mise-en-scene, not 99.

I'm fairly certain Fincher was being facetious about the whole thing. There is no way a big production like this with an extremely tight schedule would be shut down multiple days for something so trivial. Simply would never happen. Let alone the production company allowing the director to shit talk the star of the film on the DVD commentary lol.
@ericc.27894 жыл бұрын
Seems like he spent half of the commentary explaining stuff on screen and the other half complaining.

Affleck confirmed it, though. It definitely happened. And Fincher is the kind of director who has a very specific look in mind where he wouldn't back down. Plus, Fincher is known for doing dozens of takes for a scene, so time isn't always a factor.
@hotdogs35353 жыл бұрын
Fincher wasn’t joking. They didn’t clash on set, as witnessed by many, but refusal to take direction, even in a small instance, must have stayed with Fincher. While Fincher makes more consistently stellar films, Affleck is an Oscar winning director and writer. While nominated, Fincher is not. I think it’s unfair to call him unprofessional. The DP on Gone Girl said that even though Affleck won an Oscar the year before for Argo, he still behaved like a willing student for Fincher in Gone Girl. Also, Jack Nicholson refused to wear a Red Sox hat for Scorsese in The Departed, and said he would only wear a Yankees hat, and it never shut down production. Also, the compromise of wearing a Mets hat is great, because a lot of New Yorkers are big Mets fans. Jon Stewart for example is a New Yorker and a big Mets fan. The rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox is intense for die hard fans. Affleck was probably willing to wear the hat, if it weren’t for the fact that it would upset a lot of his fans. He is right, it would have been a whole thing. I love Fincher, his work is great, but he’s a notorious perfectionist. Affleck even tested this by moving the lens very slightly on set of Gone Girl. Something most wouldn’t have noticed. Again, Affleck wasn’t messing around with camera equipment he didn’t know anything about, since a lot of actors aren’t also Oscar winning directors. However Fincher noticed it immediately. I think Fincher is brilliant. He frequently works with my biggest artistic hero, Trent Reznor. However he gives Trent the space he wants to work on his material. I just think that Fincher doesn’t respect Affleck as much. He was great in Gone Girl. I know a lot of people don’t like Affleck, but he’s more talented than people give him credit for, and I’ve heard he is a nice guy to work with. It’s unfortunate that most great directors are also tyrants on set,(Tarantino, Kubrick, Cameron) with the exception of the Coen brothers.
