Did I misunderstand something? Didn't Cate Blanchett win an Oscar for playing Bob Dylan? No cross dressing or gender dysphoria that I recall.

I have yet to see a film that bill was in that he wasn’t brilliant in. I especially loved in as the washed up rock star trying to make a comeback in Love Actually. I laughed in almost every scene he was in.

I appreciate the recommendation, and this is a well-done video 👍 Still, and speaking as a trained actor who worked 10 years in regional theatre, you cast Nighy because you want "that Crayola color" so to speak. I rewatch Page Eight frequently because I delight in Nighy's performance, and I've fallen to sleep listening to his BBC Radio 4 Charles Paris more times than I can count, but I cannot say he's demonstrated much range in this period of maturity since, say, Pirates. 🤭🤷

I'm right there with you re: the Charles Paris role, I listen to them a lot to help me get to sleep.

@@silvercat151 the books are good, too, but different, less farcical. I like the way Paris ages through the series. The author has other series. My fav is the Fethering Mysteries, but the author reads the current series, Decluttering Mysteries, so compellingly! 😊

Never saw the post credits and looked for The Gimp, I just assumed it was secretly Tarantino himself. And not only that but having to get wardrobe to purchase a new costume wasn’t necessary 😉

An outstanding actor with another outstanding performance; but, while the movie is good the novel is even better; see the movie but be sure to read the novel and then put the book aside for a time and then read it again. Penelope Fitzgerald’s novels need to be read several times.

He was a struggling actor for decades until his breakout role in Love Actually which made him a star over night and much sought after by directors. He said, "If I'd known how my career would turn out I wouldn't have been so cranky."

Sounds like a dreadful movie. The quality of the production is irrelevant. What sense of art and of life would have evil win over good?

Bill Nighy is an incredible actor who let's the stillness show the emotions without words. He is fantastic in everything he does because his approach, wether in comedy or drama has his full focus without the distractions around his character.

Thankyou for this video & indeed many of the comments made. I live overseas & shall have to buy the DVD to watch this. Bill Nighy really impressed me in 2011 when a brilliant KZbin video was made of him portraying a city financier & in an interview giving his views on The Robin Hood tax - still relevant today.

My own personal little headcanon was that the gimp was independently wealthy, bankrolled the place, and this whole shtick was his thing. What did Janice say about Ralph in The Sopranos? Bottom from the top? Something like that

I have The Bookshop on dvd so I can re-watch it. The film is based on the 1978 novel of the same name by Penelope Fitgerald, was short listed for the Booker prize, and is an equally excellent story. Bill Nighy is always amazingly understated as an actor except for maybe his role as Billy Mack in Love Actually.
