Basically, a fine example of how courtly manners (literally) were defined in the 18th Century. A gentleman knew how to present himself and articulate his thoughts in the best and most polite, even noble, manner. Had either of them not done so, they would have embarrassed their respective nations and themselves.

As an Australian anglophile, I love that you have a positive view of Britain. I'd love to see you do a reaction about something Australian-centric. Both the Gallipoli (WWI) and Kokoda (WWII) campaigns played hugely important roles in forming Australia's identity, and though it is often spoken about here, I rarely see it given much attention outside of Australia and New Zealand. I would love to see your take on it.
@hitomisalazar4073
@hitomisalazar4073 2 жыл бұрын
Funny enough Gallipoli was talked about quite a bit in my standard public education where I grew up in the USA (the Pacific Northwest). Mostly because when it came to WW2 we focused on the Pacific Theater. Meaning there was a lot of talk of Amphibious operations. Naturally going back to Gallipoli and what a disaster it was. How most nations declared opposed landings just weren't possible in the modern world due to the failure. And how the US Navy basically said: "Here, hold my beer while I figure this one out" instead in over analyzing it and figuring out what is modern amphibious warfare from it (including several specialized inventions created to solve the problems from it). But it was usually in that context. But definitely is an episode of history that could use more spotlight. It's such a key turning point for both Australia and Turkey.

Commenting on your channel from across the pond. It's too easy and simplistic to go along with a lot of the rest of Europe's narrative about the problems with the USA. And although like every country America certainly does have it's problems, I'm a big fan of many aspects of your nation and absolutely will be visiting some day in the not-too-distant future. As president, Adams ran afoul of the very bitter divisions of the first party system. Generally considered a Federalist, Adams considered himself above party politics, and the actual Federalists (Hamilton being the chief) considered him ineffective. The Jeffersonians (falsely) claimed he was a "monarchist." In the end, he did outflank the revolutionary French government, which was trying to suborn American interests to its own. The Alien and Sedition Acts were a bad mistake, but we forget that party conflict was a new thing in the country, and there was every indication that the pro-French elements of the D-R Party were not playing footsie.

When 9/11 happened, a good chunk of Britain felt *personally* affronted as if it had occurred in our own realm. There's a reason that the British public started off supporting going to Afghan for war; the Anglosphere had been harmed. Equally, and this is anecdotal, when my mother visited the US she saw several times where Americans would thank British (and Australian) service personnel for their service as if they were American soldiers. The Anglosphere has simply returned to its natural state; the Anglo Saxon multi-kingdom model, where we have different Kings, different policies, but by Gods if you attack one you attack us all.

One factor that helped the rapprochement was that the U.S. and the British were able to settle their border disputes pretty much during the first half of the 19th century. The Oregon Treaty of 1846 settled the boundaries between the Oregon Territory and what became British Columbia, and the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 settled the line between New Brunswick and Maine. Those agreements paved the way and set the conditions for a peaceful border, allowing for U.S.-Canadian relations to develop well over time. Proof that sound diplomacy really is the best long-term solution to potential conflicts.

We did not secede from Britain because we hated the British. In fact, the vast majority of the colonists were proud to be British because they felt they had more freedom to live their lives than anywhere else on earth. However, parliament began to rule the colonies more directly with new laws and taxes. The colonists protested believing they were an assault on their historic rights as Englishmen. Still, the colonies petitioned the King hoping for a peaceful reconcilation. When it was clear the King and Parliament would not listen. That's when we declared independence.

It irritates me somewhat when people say countries have 'friends'. They don't, countries have interests which may coincide with another country's interests. However, if two countries, even ones with interests that have coincided for as long as the US's and UK's have, found themselves with competing interests, they would act in their own, not the other countries interest, and if that caused the other country hardship, so be it.

Agreed, the USA had no such issue threatening France, Israel and the UK when they tried to take over the Suez Canal. No amount of "Special" relations keeps America from trying to maintain their hegemony. Nor did it save the British Empire from America using their leverage to drown the UK in debt payments and wrenching the countries out of their holdings. If only to keep the rise of communism from spreading. That said, the UK and the USA are friendly just nowhere near how much Anglophiles think it truly is. Speaking of Anglophiles, another pet peeve is when they describe Americas relation with the UK as that of a Child to their Parent bonus points if they describe Canada as the "good child that respected the rules" and whatnot.

VTH, considering your location, have you heard the story of the SS Ohio? the only merchant ship to be played into harbour by a military band. It,s an epic story that potentially stopped Germany winning the war.

The civilian SS Ohio was given a military salute as she entered Malta's Grand Harbour by a Royal Navy band, because what she and her heroic crew endured in that EPIC convoy during Operation Pedestal. That tanker WAS A WARSHIP!

When I think of the relationship between the 2 nations I recall british soldiers taking POW's from danish soldiers (who were under the impression that the brits honored the Geneva convention), and forementioned brits then handed the POWs over to the americans who tortured them in Guantanamo prison with total disregard to any convention or standard of warfare. Biggest shame in the modern history of Denmark was to validate the Iraq war and the pointless death of so many.

I love that they tried to get the actors to do the varieties of British and American accents that would have common in those times and places, in the John Adams mini-series. So rarely attempted, even though they're not hard to reconstruct with some accuracy because historical linguistics has become quite a sophisticated field of study.

Funny enough this is something I've pondered before. Because... even as late as WW1 when the US Marine Expeditionary Force arrived in the Western Front what were the Americans saying? "We're here to help you old bean England!"? Nope. It was "Lafayette! We return the favor!". France was our big ally in the Great War. Not the English as is popularly post WW1 envisioned. In fact there was some petty things involved due to a general dislike of the British at the time (like increasing General Pershing's rank to effectively a 6 star general just so the British wouldn't lord over him a theoretically higher rank). Now France and England being allies is also an interesting question. Because it kind of comes out of the Scramble for Africa. Where centuries of blood feuds going back to the Norman Conquest and such basically gets sorted out by, in large part, the close friendship that two soldiers made in Africa, and how they impacted things after the war as they joined the diplomatic corps. But I had never really heard the US version of "Why this change happened"? Why did we go from snubbing Britian every chance we got, our enemies seeing Britain as a natural ally to reach out to (As the CSA desperately tried), and become "the closest allies" as is popularized today? Time to find out I suppose.

The John Adams thing is also very interesting to me. Mostly because I remember reading about how much he liked going to Britain over France. In France he was just the odd man out. He didn't really "Get" the French culture. He wasn't able to really accomplish the things he wanted. He wanted to deal with things in formal circumstances. Deals discussed openly and things written in writing. When the French politics were often about personal connections and networking that he just didn't grasp. Where as Britain was a bit more of that Formal, Open thing with direct dealing over policies and deals being cut at parties in opulent manors or bedrooms.

History Matters videos are short but dense. Every person in every scene is placed there on purpose. Usually you can figure out who they are (i.e. famous politicians etc.). Also pay attention to the portraits on the walls in the background.

Lyndon Johnson could not get Prime Minister Wilson to commit British troops to Vietnam. One point of difference~ although Wilson said to his cabinet he would not criticise the US for Vietnam since we (the UK) still had to repay the US loans for WW2.
