Today, Christians understand that there are many significant doctrinal differences between Protestants and Catholics. When and where, though, did the Roman Catholic church start on the road to heresy, false teaching, and apostasy? Jump in the Delorean with Todd as we go on a history lesson through the errors, heresies, and blasphemies of the Roman Catholic Church.

I was raised Catholic, born in the 50's, we had a family Bible for listing the family tree but weren't aloud to read it-the priests said laymen couldn't understand it without their help. In the 70's as a teen I received apologetic training by the priest to counter what "evil history teachers" and evangelizing classmates said. God moved us to a state where the priest didn't get involved with the youth. Friends prayed for me and kept quoting Scripture. Curiosity got me (actually the Lord drew me) to the Word. I read it on my own and saw many discrepancies with Catholic teaching, God taught me His Word through my reading, His Spirit enlightening and faithful Bible teachers. Went to a Baptist church and Catholic mass for awhile. I was saved by God and His Word. I even wrote the priest and told him how he could get saved. Never heard from him. "Depend on it, if we learn anything correctly, we will have to learn it from God." Spurgeon

I knew a catholic man at work and for years would casually speak to him about the differences. He didn’t want to talk about it. He defended the church. One day at church he had a Bible in his hands and the priest chastised him. The priest told him “you don’t know what’s in that Bible, we tell you what’s in it”. He went home and started reading it. A week later he came up to me and told me what happened and that he had been mistaught for 50 years and was very mad about it. He converted to Christianity.

To be honest, many have said that Catholicism is Paganism but it's always seemed to me to be more wiccan than that. What with the buying and grading of human remains, the delusion and coercion of seeing Christ in a piece of flat bread at the threat of excommunication and the alters and the sacrifice of Christ as a victim even though he voluntarily went to the cross with full knowledge of what He would endure negates the assertion that He was a victim entirely. It seems closer to witchcraft to me to be honest.

The #1 issue with Catholicism for me is absolutely Mariology. Nothing about what Catholics say about her is true and it just completely takes me out of it. Catholics try and argue they don't "worship" Mary when basically all I ever see is them worshipping Mary and putting her on a pedestal above Jesus. But let's hypothetically say they don't ACTUALLY worship Mary. They declare her to be a perpetual virgin when she had other children. They declare her to have had an immacculate conception (which undermines Jesus being the only immacculate conception). They also declare that she never sinned in her life, while at the same time declaring she was a perpetual virgin. These two things are complete contradictions, because she was married. 1 Corinthians 7 "3 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control." Jesus was a perpetual virgin, but he also never married. If Mary was a perpetual virign then that contradicts her need to be sexually faithful to her husband. Therefore, she sinned against her husband, and could not be forever without sin. Its a catch-22, literally an impossible situation. Catholics in general try to downplay sex overall, though, so that's not surprising. Sex is both for pleasure and for children in marriage, its not just one or the other. The angel even tells Joseph not to sleep with her until after the baby is born, directly implying that yes, they will consummate after that is done. Another thing that comes up is that they also sometimes call her the "Queen of Heaven". The "Queen of Heaven" actually DOES exist as a term in the Bible: Jeremiah 7 "17 Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. They pour out drink offerings to other gods to arouse my anger. 19 But am I the one they are provoking? declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?" This obviously predates the existence of Mary, and its clearly describing worshipping a false Goddess. Its another description of the depravity and idolatry of Israel. Purgatory and the Papacy are other pretty big issues, but Mariology IMO is by far the worst aspect. As for the Apocrypha, it already was translated by Jerome because they believed the Apocrypha was good reading to support the scriptures but not actual Scripture. Later they decided to incorporate it as actual Scripture, and it contains certain things that they use for examples of "praying for the dead" for their concept of "purgatory". The problem is that the examples used here do not qualify. The fallen soldiers that were being prayed for in 2 Maccabees were found to be guilty of idolatry. Idolatry is a "carnal" sin which means you must go to confession to have your sins forgiven again to not go to hell. Purgatory is only for those who still have to pay penance but haven't committed any carnal sins.

It goes way beyond Mariology. Nearly every single thing about Roman Catholic dogma is heretical and pagan. By using the measure of scripture found in Galatians 1:8-9, Roman Catholics are not Christians at all. They preach an entirely different gospel based on works. This is also evident in the fact that modern polytheists such as Hindus reject Christianity, but accept RC because they see it similar to their religion. They see the worship of Mary and the saints as the same as themselves worshipping Hindu idols. Most polytheistic cultures get along because they’re all worshipping the same demons. This is why we as Christians must always be spreading the Gospel of Jesus to all, including those who claim to be Christian. For His glory, He will save them, not through Roman Catholic dogma, but in spite of it. As alway, Soli Deo Gloria.

I worked at a Catholic School and I can say with 100% certainty that they worship Mary. They're being disingenuous, I saw it first hand. I've seen them bow to a statue of her and put a crown on the statues head. I also witnessed borderline necromancy. One of the priests mother had died and he asked us to pray to her and she would very much appreciate it.

One of the major mistakes with the notion of Catholicism in their Maryology is found in the Gospel of Luke Chpt 1 verse 47, if she is as they say co-redemtrix, born without sin, why does she call God her Saviour? Surely a sinless person does not need saving?

1992 Justification has been merited for us by the Passion of Christ who offered himself on the cross as a living victim, holy and pleasing to God, and whose blood has become the instrument of atonement for the sins of all men. Justification is conferred in Baptism, the sacrament of faith. It conforms us to the righteousness of God, who makes us inwardly just by the power of his mercy. Its purpose is the glory of God and of Christ, and the gift of eternal life: You must mean something else...surely you believe that Jesus died for you and his blood has atoned for your sins.

Well done, Todd. I was born into Roman Catholicism, and my pathway out into the freedom of the Reformed tradition replicated this history lesson in many ways. A difficult journey, but I knew God was with me every step of the way. I had my Luther moment early in my college years. I tried and tried to get RC priests to engage with me and my questions, and none were really willing to. I was teaching elementary school kids in Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes and stumbled over so many Catholic practices that I could not substantiate in the Bible - which I was actually discouraged from reading by priests and nuns. I knew Scripture was authoritative - my spirit bearing witness to the Holy Spirit-breathed Word. Finally, I started reading Luther and Calvin for myself, and the jig was up. My eyes were opened to the falsehoods of the Roman Catholic church and its teachings. Sola fides. Sola gratia. Sola Scriptura. Soli Deo Gloria.

Maybe it’s because I met God when I was totally isolated and didn’t even have internet, this was before social media anyway, but...I started and continue walking with God with nothing but prayer, a dusty old family Bible, and a Christian music CD someone once gave for Christmas and I found buried in a closet while hiding there. From the beginning Jesus has been my teacher and even after he rescued me from my circumstances and gave me physical freedom, Jesus and the Bible has remained my sole teacher. I interact with other Christians and listen to Christians and what they have to say...but at the end of the day my walk and the way I take is based solely on the Bible I read every morning and night, the Holy Spirit who leads me and helps me, and my prayers which I use to ask about things in the Bible I don’t understand or want to apply. I can’t even take credit for this way in which I walk because it was God who taught me and disciplined me and basically funneled me into the river in which I ride. We all stand and fall before Jesus. We all have access to His Word and all His advice and commandments. I don’t judge but I do wish with all my heart that everyone could experience a walk like mine because it’s truly amazing.

I would suggest to you that the whole thing started sliding down that slope much earlier, beginning with Ignatius of Antioch (d. c. 110 AD) saying that bishops should rightly stand in the place of Christ and God over the local assembly, a trend that became empire wide by 187 AD, curiously about the same time frame that the miracles of the Spirit severely declined. The Catholic bishops' usage of Nicolaitan authority to ostracize and push out the hyper-charismatic Montanists around that same time was also another sign that religion had replaced relationship (one's first love) with God.

@Eucharist Angel You're setting up a Straw Man argument. We don't believe anything because Luther a Catholic priest said so. We believe it because JESUS said so. "This IS (est) My Body." "This IS (est) My Blood." HOW that happens, He did not say. Therefore, we believe in His Real Presence in the bread and wine. HOW this happens, we do not know. When Ray was in St. Francis Seminary near Milwaukee as a Cistercian monk, one of his teachers, another priest, said that, theoretically, if a priest said the Words of Institution while driving past a bakery, all the bread would become the Body of Christ. So much for the concept of transubstantiation. We care about the Doctrines of God - not man.

@eucharistangel4662 I don't think Luther added this to the gospel: Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heaven-not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.”-John 6:53-58 (NKJV)

@@thomasweaver3405 You need to keep reading. John 6:63, Berean Literal Bible: It is the Spirit giving life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit and they are life. In other words, Jesus was using metaphors, just like He used so many parables. I wouldn’t say Luther added to his gospel; he just failed to debride it of corrupt Catholic additions. Galatians 3:3 English Standard Version Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? I admire Luther for his journey. He recognized Paul’s message of grace alone through faith alone, but failed to apply it thoroughly to communion and baptism. It fell to a later generation to leave behind that Roman Catholic baggage.

Your absolutely correct. Many doctrines weren’t defined until later but it doesn’t mean they weren’t there before. This is certainly the case of the Marian doctrines. Many of them were defined in the 1950s but the evidence of them before is overwhelming. The Assumption of Mary is a mystery in the rosary which predates 1950 by hundreds of years. You see The Assumption taught in Eastern and Oriental Orthodoxy as well.

Now, the evidence for this is that even if you say you don't believe me, your conscience bears witness that I speak the truth and you know there is a creator to whom you will answer to one day. Are you ready? Your "good actions" you rely on are detestable to God, lest you try to negotiate your way into Heaven. Only by grace and through faith shall you receive salvation. This hurts so much. Every time Scripture after Scripture is placed right in front of the catholics I meet, I either see personal attacks and name calling, or - more often - these people will respond by saying, "We can't interpret the Scriptures on our own. Why don't you lean on the 2,000 years of human understanding in the 'one true church' since we're the only ones who commune with Peter?" Honest question: how am I supposed to truly minister to those who have been cowed into the idea that they cannot read and understand the Word? This nihilistic notion of faith is disheartening.

I have witnessed to Mormons for years, and it is next to impossible to communicate with Mormons, because many are born into the cult and have been inundated with lies and deception for a lifetime. Even those who read their Bible will only read the verses that support their church doctrines. It is the same with Catholics and Jehovah Witnesses. What do we do? Until one's heart is broken for what their sin cost the father and the son, there is no hope. I keep this in mind: So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11 It helps me to remember my former state: For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:3-7 I admire your speaking the truth. It pleases God that you do so. For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 1 Corinthians 1:21

IMHO, the big moment of apostasy from Christ as Saviour was the Fourth Lateran Council 1215. This established officially Roman Catholicism with its position of salvation by its church sacraments and by its church priesthood. From this time onwards, Rome did not preach Jesus Christ's once-and-for-all sacrifice on the cross as the propitiation for sins. Rather, they taught that Christ's saving work was achieved through the sacraments and through the mediation of Catholic priests.

As a catholic, I couldn't agree more. The errors of the Church have piled up so enormously that there may seem there is no hope to bring that train back on the rails. It got so, so heavy... But there still are many of us who believe it's possible. This is why we're not protestants, but still call ourselves catholics, even though we are Bible-believing, new born Christians who see through the errors. We're the ones who made Catholic Church sign the Join Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification - a document that allows Catholics to firmly believe that we are saved by grace, apart of works, without being forced to leave the Catholic Church. We're the ones who forced the Catholic Church to publicly say that it is heretical to pray to Mary, because prayer is only due to God in Youcat (the new version of the Catechism for youth). We are the ones who push so harshly for the Catholic Church to be ecumenical, which is a code word for "more protestant-like". We know there's still much work to be done and that traditional wing of the Church is growing strong but... Don't give up hope. There's a billion Catholics out there. Vast majority of them will never leave, this is all they know and they don't even have any protestant churches they could go to if they wanted. They're all worth fighting for, and you can only do that from within the Church, not from the outside. Pray for us. Don't dismiss us, when we come up to you and ask for Ecumenism. What we really ask for is not for you to include us as we are, but to teach us. We really do mean that. Holy Spirit can do anything. Come, Holy Spirit! Renew Catholic Church.

Transubstantiation is affirmed as early as the fourth century, check out Cyril of Jerusalem's Catechetical Lectures. More examples of this stuff can be given. Again, not a Roman Catholic myself. That's because you don't understand what the Catholic Church means by referring to the Mass as an UNBLOODY sacrifice. It is not because of the ABSENCE of the blood of Christ on the altar during the Mass (His Blood is really and truly present in the chalice under the form of wine). It because Jesus doesn't suffer and die again and again at every Mass but He offers Himself as a LIVING SACRIFICE to God through the hands of the priest under the form of bread and wine. The word "bloody" or "shedding blood" means "death" (see 1 Chronicles 28:3)

27. Transubstantiation, proclaimed by pope Innocent III....1215. As a concept, transubstantiation can be traced back at least to Tertullian, who states "He took bread, offered it to His disciples and made it into His body by saying, 'This is My body'" (Against Marcion 212 AD); likewise Cyril of Jerusalem says "Once at Cana in Galilee by a mere nod He changed water into wine; should it now be incredible that He changes wine into blood?" (Catechetical Lectures [Mystagogic], 350 AD) [55]. As a term, transubstantiation was first used by the theologians Magister Roland about 1150, Stephen of Tournai about 1160, and Peter Comestor about 1170 [56]; this terminology was then used by the 1st Lateran Council in 1215, which is apparently where Boettner got his date from. As can be seen, however, Boettner is off by anywhere from 865 to 1003 years in the first instance, and anywhere from 45 to 65 years in the second. @@gracepilditch9388 Here’s some objections to Protestantism then: 1. 2 Peter 3:16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. So, there are verses hard to understand in Scripture, that they twist to their own destruction. Seems like the Protestant idea that the core parts of the faith remain intact and Protestants just have minor differences is false. It clearly says these verses that are hard to understand, if misunderstood, lead to destruction. Christ prayed for us to be One. Catholics have had one Teaching and Church for the last 2,000 years. And yet Protestants have many contradicting doctrines on the Bible and are splintered into many different denominations. They disagree on things like: once saved always saved, Baptismal Regeneration and when to Baptize, if and when divorce is allowed, if the New Testament Israel verses talk about the Church, Israel, or both, etc. So, simply put, Protestantism is a jumbled mess, how can anyone know the fullness of Faith in this mess? And Furthermore, how do you reconcile Peter saying no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of private interpretation? I mean yes, private interpretation is good, but you must submit to the teaching Authority, the Church, there’s a reason for the Church. Jesus Conferred upon the Apostles a Kingdom, a Visible, Structured Kingdom. Why did the man in Acts say he needed someone to teach him, and then an Apostle taught him? Matthew 18:16-17 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector. 2. The Bible is a collection of Inspired Writings. How do we know what is Inspired and what isn’t? The Bible itself doesn’t tell us, there is no “Inspired Table of Contents”. The early Christians didn’t have or pass down a Canon. They disagreed on which Books were Inspired. Early Christian Writings far outnumber the Bible Books. How do we know some of the Books we have are Inspired too, from a Protestant viewpoint? How do you know if you have the right Old Testament Canon, with works like Enoch, or the DeuteroCanonicals, or even other Books? I don’t think scholarship is that good. The Catholic Church Compiled the Bible centuries after Christ’s Birth. Using the Authority Catholics believe the Church to have. This Canon was used for centuries and served as the basis for the Protestant Canon. And I don’t think the Protestants were divinely inspired, prots don’t believe that, Luther literally tried to remove Books like James. That would just be trusting some guy’s opinion. So if you reject the Authority of the Catholic Church, and the idea the Holy Spirit Protects Her from error, then what makes you say your Bible Canon is correct? And if you don’t have a Bible Canon, what does that leave you with? People coming up with their own ideas for the Canon, meaning the Bible, and the Deposit of Faith gets distorted to whatever you want. What can you rely on for a Bible Canon, your own opinion? 3. If sola scripture is true, why isn’t it found in the Bible? Why wasn’t it believed for centuries until the Protestant Reformation-era? The Bible does say to obey Tradition: 2 Thess 2:15 “So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.” Why does the New Testament mention Jewish oral traditions not found in the Old Testament? a. The reference to “He shall be called a Nazarene” cannot be found in the Old Testament, yet it was “spoken by the prophets” (Matt. 2:23). Therefore, this prophecy, which is considered to be “God’s word,” was passed down orally rather than through Scripture. b. In Matthew 23:2-3, Jesus teaches that the scribes and Pharisees have a legitimate, binding authority based “on Moses’ seat,” but this phrase or idea cannot be found anywhere in the Old Testament. It is found in the (originally oral) Mishnah, which teaches a sort of “teaching succession” from Moses on down. c. In 1 Corinthians 10:4, Paul refers to a rock that “followed” the Jews through the Sinai wilderness. The Old Testament says nothing about such miraculous movement. But rabbinic tradition does. d. “As Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses” (2 Tim. 3:8). These two men cannot be found in the related Old Testament passage (Ex. 7:8ff.) or anywhere else in the Old Testament. Jesus did speak out against the traditions of men, but He didn’t say all tradition is bad, only that of men. Just like how there is Sound Doctrine and doctrines of men. This was said in a culture where everyone accepted Tradition. Also, if Jesus was saying Oral Tradition is false, the Pharisees could have pointed to the Torah and said Jesus was speaking orally, tradition, whenever He said something not in the Old Testament. Furthermore, Tradition is Transmitted and protected by the Church, St Paul even tells Timothy to entrust his traditions to trustworthy men, and Jesus gave the Church the Authority to bind and loose, and Promised that the gates of hades will not prevail against the Church. Furthermore, only a couple verses earlier Jesus seemingly confirmed the “seat of Moses” Tradition. “Word” in Holy Scripture often refers to a proclaimed, oral teaching of prophets or apostles. What the prophets spoke was the word of God regardless of whether or not their utterances were recorded later as written Scripture. So for example, we read in Jeremiah: “For twenty-three years . . . the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again . . . ‘But you did not listen to me,’ declares the Lord. . . . Therefore the Lord Almighty says this: ‘Because you have not listened to my words. . . .’” (Jer. 25:3, 7-8 [NIV]). This was the word of God even though some of it was not recorded in writing. It had equal authority as writing or proclamation-never-reduced-to-writing. This was true also of apostolic preaching. When the phrases “word of God” or “word of the Lord” appear in Acts and the epistles, they almost always refer to oral preaching, not to Scripture. For example: “When you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God” (1 Thess. 2:13). If we compare this passage with another, written to the same church, Paul appears to regard oral teaching and the word of God as synonymous: “Keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us” (2 Thess. 3:6). The Jews believed in Tradition, the Pharisees who Jesus and Paul said were mainstream Judiasm believed in Tradition, but not the Sadducees. The early Christians relied heavily upon Tradition, for many reasons, not having a Canon, Bible Writings being hard to come by, etc. And also the Book John 21:25 says: Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. There we see, that the Bible did not have room for everything Jesus did. It may be implicitly found in Scripture, but not explicitly. Furthermore, Tradition explains the Bible, like the Hadiths explain the Quran. What about vague verses? The Jews believed in an Oral Torah to explain vague verses. What if a dispute arises, also, and people need help interpret aging Scripture and Tradition? Maybe an Infallible Interpreter? And also, how did the Jews know about God before Moses Wrote the Torah? 4. How do you reconcile the fact that the unanimous testimony of the early Church, even people who knew the Apostles directly, wrote very Catholic. For this, I’d look up St Ignatius, Pope Clement 1, the Didache, Justin Martyr, the Letter of Barnabas, and the Shepard of Hermas. They write about Apostolic Succession, the Catholic Church, the Authority and Presidency of Rome (Peter states he is in Babylon, a.k.a Christian code name for Rome), and Bishops, priests, and deacons, as well as more. And some of these guys knew the Apostles directly, and some of these are the earliest Christian sources. How do you reconcile that? Historical evidence exactly against Protestantism. Where is the historical evidence of Protestantism existing beforehand? Did the whole Church fall away, despite Christ’s Promise about hell not prevailing against the Church? For centuries? That early on? The Christians in Rome, Catholic Saints, and Middle Ages Christians? Sounds like Mormonism if you say yes. 5. How do you reconcile things like the Book of James refuting faith alone, or the Letters of Peter saying Baptism saves us, or Jesus saying you must be Born Again of Water and Spirit, or the Bible verses about Peter and also Isaiah 20?

AD 1546: The Catholic Council of Trent, called to counter changes made by Martin Luther, again reaffirmed the canonicity of all 46 books of the Old Testament. Some Protestant reformers who attended, tried to get the Church to accept the list of books which the Jewish rabbis had chosen at Jamnia. The Church refused and upheld her teaching from Pope Damasus I, and the Council of Florence. As a result, Protestants have the same New Testament books as Catholics, but their Old Testament differs because it does not contain the books rejected by the rabbis at Jamnia, and much later, rejected by Martin Luther. It is interesting that for 1500 years all Christians accepted the same canon for the Old Testament. Only in the last 480 years, since the reformation, has there been disagreement from Protestants AD 1546: At the Council of Trent, the Catholic Church reaffirmed once and for all the full list of 27 books. The council also confirmed the inclusion of the Deuterocanonical books which had been a part of the Bible canon since the early Church and was confirmed at the councils of 393 AD, 373, 787 and 1442 AD. At Trent Rome actually dogmatized the canon, making it more than a matter of canon law, which had been the case up to that point, closing it for good.👍👍

At the last supper after they had eaten the Passover meal, he says This is My Body, This Is my blood..Back in John chapter 6 he had said "Unless you eat My Body and drink My Blood you have no life within you." (John 6:53.) Science proves this too because there are over a hundred Church approved scientifically verified Eucharistic miracles. We certainly do not believe that Jesus is crucified at every Mass, rather that we are mysteriously transported back to Jesus sacrifice at Calvary and this is the eternal sacrifice is re-presented to the Father who of course exists outside of space and time.

1. Prayers for the dead, began about....300 AD. The first Scriptural mention of prayers for the dead occurs in the Deuterocanonical book of 2 Maccabees, chapter 12, verses 39 through 46, in which Judas Maccabeus and his men pray for their fallen comrades, that God may forgive the sins of the dead men. 2 Maccabees was written sometime after 124 BC [1], which makes Boettner's date more than 400 years off. Examples of Christians offering supplication for the dead are found in grave scripts such as the Epitaph of Abercius, the Bishop of Hierapolis, written in 180 AD. On this grave marker, Abercius asks all who may read his marker to pray for him [2]. Other examples can be found in the works of the Christian apologist Tertullian, who lived approximately from 155 AD to 250 AD. In his work The Crown (211 AD), Tertullian mentions Christians offering sacrifices for the dead on the anniversary of their deaths [3], and makes a similar reference in his work Monogamy (213 AD), where he mentions widows offering prayers and sacrifices for their deceased husbands [4]. In even the very latest of these two examples, Boettner is still nearly a hundred years off. [1] Introduction notes to the book of 2 Maccabees, New American Bible. The Orthodox and Catholic Church split around 1054 while many will say the differences a great they overlap on almost every major doctrine...while the Orthodox don't really reach out much the Catholics have reached out several times and consider their sacraments valid.

The Church did not go astray. Catholicism is more Biblical than Protestantism if you look at it, also, more similar to Judaism, showing Christianity is the fulfillment of Judaism. Also, we don’t believe in Scripture Alone, because for one, that itself is unBiblical, so everything isn’t always explicitly in the Bible that’s in Catholicism. Also, let’s look at the early Christian sources, some literally who knew the Apostles directly: Ignatius of Antioch, who was a direct disciple of St John the Apostle, there were some later forgeries of his letters, but these letters are historically, not forgeries: See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is administered either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there, let the multitude of the people also be; even as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. ((Letter to the Smyrnaeans, Chapter 8). “Now, therefore, it has been my privilege to see you in the person of your God-inspired bishop, Damas; and in the persons of your worthy presbyters, Bassus and Apollonius; and my fellow-servant, the deacon, Zotion. What a delight is his company! For he is subject to the bishop as to the grace of God, and to the presbytery as to the law of Jesus Christ” (Letter to the Magnesians 2 [A.D. 110]). “Take care to do all things in harmony with God, with the bishop presiding in the place of God, and with the presbyters in the place of the council of the apostles, and with the deacons, who are most dear to me, entrusted with the business of Jesus Christ, who was with the Father from the beginning and is at last made manifest” (ibid., 6:1). “Indeed, when you submit to the bishop as you would to Jesus Christ, it is clear to me that you are living not in the manner of men but as Jesus Christ, who died for us, that through faith in his death you might escape dying. It is necessary, therefore-and such is your practice that you do nothing without the bishop, and that you be subject also to the presbytery, as to the apostles of Jesus Christ our hope, in whom we shall be found, if we live in him. It is necessary also that the deacons, the dispensers of the mysteries [sacraments] of Jesus Christ, be in every way pleasing to all men. For they are not the deacons of food and drink, but servants of the Church of God. They must therefore guard against blame as against fire” (Letter to the Trallians 2:1-3 [A.D. 110]). “In like manner let everyone respect the deacons as they would respect Jesus Christ, and just as they respect the bishop as a type of the Father, and the presbyters as the council of God and college of the apostles. Without these, it cannot be called a church. I am confident that you accept this, for I have received the exemplar of your love and have it with me in the person of your bishop. His very demeanor is a great lesson and his meekness is his strength. I believe that even the godless do respect him” (ibid., 3:1-2). Those indeed, who belong to God and to Jesus Christ-they are with the bishop. And those who repent and come to the unity of the Church-they too shall be of God. . . . Do not err my brethren: if anyone follow a schismatic, he will not inherit the Kingdom of God. . . . Take care, then, to use one Eucharist, so that whatever you do, you do according to God: for there is one flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ, and one cup in the union of His Blood; one altar as there is one bishop with the presbytery and my fellow servants, the deacons (Letter to the Philadelphians, Chapter 3). “Ignatius . . . to the church also which holds the presidency, in the location of the country of the Romans, worthy of God, worthy of honor, worthy of blessing, worthy of praise, worthy of success, worthy of sanctification, and, because you hold the presidency in love, named after Christ and named after the Father” (Letter to the Romans 1:1 [A.D. 110]). “You [the church at Rome] have envied no one, but others you have taught. I desire only that what you have enjoined in your instructions may remain in force” (ibid., 3:1). Pope Clement 1, who knew the Apostles directly, the first successor of Peter: POPE CLEMENT I “Through countryside and city [the apostles] preached, and they appointed their earliest converts, testing them by the Spirit, to be the bishops and deacons of future believers. Nor was this a novelty, for bishops and deacons had been written about a long time earlier. . . . Our apostles knew through our Lord Jesus Christ that there would be strife for the office of bishop. For this reason, therefore, having received perfect foreknowledge, they appointed those who have already been mentioned and afterwards added the further provision that, if they should die, other approved men should succeed to their ministry” (Letter to the Corinthians 42:4-5, 44:1-3 [A.D. 80]). HEGESIPPUS “When I had come to Rome, I [visited] Anicetus, whose deacon was Eleutherus. And after Anicetus [died], Soter succeeded, and after him Eleutherus. In each succession and in each city there is a continuance of that which is proclaimed by the law, the prophets, and the Lord” (Memoirs, cited in Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History 4:22 [A.D. 180]). 1 Peter 5:13, NIV: She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. It is a well known historical fact Peter was in Rome btw, his Tomb is found there and also: 1 Peter 5:13, NIV: She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. In Babylon, Babylon was a Christian code word for Rome Look at the Authority Pope Clement 1 had in the early Church: POPE CLEMENT I “Owing to the sudden and repeated calamities and misfortunes which have befallen us, we must acknowledge that we have been somewhat tardy in turning our attention to the matters in dispute among you, beloved; and especially that abominable and unholy sedition, alien and foreign to the elect of God, which a few rash and self-willed persons have inflamed to such madness that your venerable and illustrious name, worthy to be loved by all men, has been greatly defamed. . . . Accept our counsel and you will have nothing to regret. . . . If anyone disobey the things which have been said by him [God] through us [i.e., that you must reinstate your leaders], let them know that they will involve themselves in transgression and in no small danger. . . . You will afford us joy and gladness if being obedient to the things which we have written through the Holy Spirit, you will root out the wicked passion of jealousy” (Letter to the Corinthians 1, 58-59, 63 [A.D. 80]). HERMAS “Therefore shall you [Hermas] write two little books and send one to Clement [Bishop of Rome] and one to Grapte. Clement shall then send it to the cities abroad, because that is his duty” (The Shepherd 2:4:3 [A.D. 80]). Here’s the Shepard of Hermas: HERMAS “[The Shepherd said:] ‘But those who are weak and slothful in prayer, hesitate to ask anything from the Lord; but the Lord is full of compassion, and gives without fail to all who ask him. But you, [Hermas,] having been strengthened by the holy angel [you saw], and having obtained from him such intercession, and not being slothful, why do not you ask of the Lord understanding, and receive it from him?’” (The Shepherd 3:5:4 [A.D. 80]).

I used to be a Protestant and believed the Church taught all the things you say it teaches. Thank God he lead me to the Catholic Church that Jesus established! I think there are quite a few things you misunderstand about Catholicism. If we believed a lot of the things you say we do, it would be heresy and I’d run as far away as fast as I can. If you’d like me to explain in more detail what you’re misunderstanding about Catholicism I’d be happy to do so. You listed quite a number of things and I don’t want to leave a small book here so pick a topic and I’d be happy to discuss it! I don’t know everything but I spent 8+ years studying Catholicism under the threat of excommunication from my Protestant church and was told I’d go to hell if I convert. So I wanted to make sure Catholicism was true before converting. I’ll continue praying for you and all of our Protestant brothers and sisters!

How can one claim to be a follower of Jesus Christ but continue to sacrifice Him at the altar daily through the Mass? Have you not read the Bible that Jesus's sacrifice is Once and for ALL? Jesus came to do away with the Altar, why do you guys set it up again? By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet. For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. - Hebrews 10:10-14

Something for the RCC to consider: if Mary was immaculately conceived, who is her father? And then, what biological connection does Jesus have to King David? Which He has to have if He is the Messiah because that is what God promised David. If Mary is His only human parent, that connection must come from her ancestry. The genealogy in Luke establishes His connection to David if we logically assume Eli(Heli) is Mary's father, but if he isn't how then is Jesus a descendent of David?

Yes, I know. My point is that people assume that Jew means Israelite. It does not. It does not even mean one from the tribe of Judah. The word comes from Judean, meaning someone from the Roman province of Judea. It had no significance in respect of lineage or religion. Though it did then through useage come to mean someone who practiced Judaism. But Judaism is not the law and the prophets

Due to my real conversion in April 2021, coming out of a secret double life of porn use, confessing to my wife after a night of no sleep as I knew I would go to hell, I actually did consider RCC as perhaps a source of the truth. This is because I don't buy the whole idea that no repentance is required, and the RCC seemed to have some good teaching on this. The Mary stuff is actually my main reason for not converting. For example - I actually DO believe that they may have a point about mortal and venial sins (think all the passages about people potentially losing their salvation; a dog returns to its vomit etc)...but anyways I was watching one video where the Catholic guy was saying "what should you do after committing a mortal sin?" And I thought "yes, this is good, this is the kind of info I need!" And he then said "Go to Mary!!"...that's where he lost me. Anyways, you and I will differ on some aspects of theology Todd but hear it from me that your videos on repentance were I think part of my conversion. (Though the Holy Spirit not letting me sleep a whole night I believe to be the clincher).

That's not what the immaculate conception means! Everything he explained about Mariology is false :(. The immaculata means that when St Anne and Joachim were together they were given a singular grace from God to consumate in a perfect state of holiness and purity in body and mind. They consumated without any physical or mental want, desire, arousal etc. They consumated with the purity of the angels and thus the uncleanliness that was brought upon reproducing from original sin was withheld and Mary was conceived without the stain of original sin that is given forth from the parents through sexual gratification onto the baby. She was conceived and lived without original sin thus was sinless in all other matters and was able to acquire the fullness of virtues that we were originally supposed to have before man fell from heaven, and because she was as such! Her body and soul were already fit for heaven without the death and decay brought on by sin and God thus assumed her directly into heaven. It has nothing to do with the divine incarnation and ascension of God. Completely and absolutely different!!!! All that Mary had was made and given by God.
