The answer is he was always heisenberg. Walt always was an asshole and a sociopath, just a passive one.

In a way everyone has had their hand at creating Heisenberg. Walter just wanted to make enough money for his family and die, but Jesse putting Walter In a death situation on their first day definitely put him on the path of no return. Skyler by exiling walt made it seem that there was no life for him at home so he continued to cook. When Walter quit Gus lured him in by showing him the lab and providing him with everything he needed to do this thing. When Mike emasculated him he felt that he needed to work harder to take on these opposing forces. And when he was literally pushed in the corner with Skyler giving away his money his mind fully snapped and Heisenberg was his only way out even if it meant doing a truly horrible thing.
@AJ0223 Жыл бұрын
Yeah jesse was really the catalyst that allows the story to happen. I don't wanna start argument about the morality of Jesse but if Walter hadn't seen him climbing out of the window that day the story would have never happened
@masterzombie161 Жыл бұрын
@@AJ0223 true, one event that truly screwed with Walters life is that Jesse was stealing meth from Gus to sell at a meth clinic which would lead to combos Murderers. Jesse didn’t even need the money, but doing that is where Walter would put himself on the line to protect Jesse. Funny enough Gus and them blame Walter for killing Gale, but in the end it was Jesse’s fault for stepping out of line trying to prove he can be a big dog like Gus and etc. Some say they could’ve went to the cops, but they wouldn’t be safe there either considering Gus is powerful and has people on the inside, and who the hell would believe that a high school chemistry teacher was making meth for a chicken restaurant owner?

I think one of the creators said why Walt quit gray matter. I think it was because Gretchen married Elliott Schwartz. They were all partners and Walt was going out with Gretchen but he broke up with her because he found out her family was rich and Walt is majorly insecure. They went on to make gray matter but then Elliott got together with Gretchen, and because Walt is insecure, he couldn't handle them being happy together, so he left before the company got big. The defining trait of Walt is he is very very insecure. He doesn't like people helping him and he hates when people are better than him. He is brilliant but he exaggerates his brilliance and downplays his allies and enemies. Heisnberg is who Walt THINKS he is.
@AJ0223 Жыл бұрын
He really was brilliant, though. He was one in a million and achieved great (objectively great - not morally) feats. I kind of resent Vince giving that back story, I think it would have been better undisclosed and in any case, if it's not in the show it's up for interpretation. They also said the vision was to turn Mr chips into scarface and Vince said he thought he had done that successfully - however, here we are, speculating whether that was ever really the case. I think the whole story about Walter leaving her because her family is wealthy is an insult to the character and doesn't do him justice, it also contradicts the flashback we see of walt and Gretchen where he seems confident, comfortable, there is a genuine rapport and I always read it like Gretchen was the love of his life and the one who got away, hence his resentment toward Skylar (part of it) so to have it go south because "he found out her family was rich" is stupid in my opinion, may even be a retcon and my headcanon is we never find out what exactly happened lol.
@MrWaterlionmonkey Жыл бұрын
@@AJ0223 I personally don't have a problem with it. Walt constantly shows himself as insecure and narsasitic. I actually buy him being uncomfortable that his girl was more powerful than he was. This is a man who refused Gretchen and Elliot's offer to pay his medical bills. Who didn't want Saul to fake that he made his money through his son's charity or that he inherited it. This is a man who, when out of the game, told dealers to stay out of his territory and insulted Jesse when he tried to go it alone, calling his stuff crap even though it was near as good as Walt's. This is a man who, when home free, suggested to hank that Gale was not Heisenberg. This is a man who didn't want to be bought out by an inferior competitor. This is a man who wouldn't let the feud with Gus go even after gus allowed him to live. And ultimately this is a man who threatened Gretchen and Elliot to give his family HIS money, not theirs. Walt is a very very proud man. He frequently talks about being a man and is easily manipulated if his manhood is challenged. I can absolutely buy him not being comfortable having a rich girlfriend.
@AJ0223 Жыл бұрын
@MrWaterlionmonkey yeah but if we have all those examples already, why drag him down even lower? I always thought that Gretchen was the love of his life, obviously it ended bitterly and abruptly, we infer it was his decision, we know that it had to do with pride, but that could mean many things. I read it as whatever happened, he will always carry her memory and long for her. This makes sense to me with the resentment he has for Skylar later on. (as well as their son being disabled) Also remember the flashback between him and Gretchen talking about the soul, he seems confident and they seem to know and care for each other deeply from what we see, just as an aside. To say that he threw a fit because of a power imbalance, I just don't see that. I can totally understand your thought process, but I guess I see the story differently. For all the evil horror that begets Walter, this force of chaos and will, this man did do great things - not great in a moral sense obviously but in the truly objective sense of the word he accomplished great things, monumental, genius endevours. You can see the story as a bitter pathetic man who spread misery and destruction to make himself feel stronger, as indicated by the idea that he left Gretchen because her parents were rich. But I see the story as a bitter man with a truly unique genius, crushed by concessions and failed love and failed ambition, who choses to sew destruction as an endevour to conquer fate and cut out a piece of the world. Maybe the same thing, but mine shows a deference to violence and will. Not exactly the hero's journey, but I find it more interesting than the chatecter and story that you seem to interpret. But that's really what I wanted to say, look how differently we interpret this charecter - creators of art and media may intend one thing, but ultimately these epic stories will have different meaning to the initiate, that's why I'm comfortable rejecting this specific detail from Vince Gilligan in my head canon. But yeah man. Breaking Bad. Hell yeah. Best TV show of all time. **edit what I like to think happened was simply some kind of love triangle between the 3 of them, maybe it would have been better to just say that first lol.

Personally, if I had to pick a moment, I'd pick him killing the two dealers and then getting Jesse to kill Gale. Those murders were a lot more cold-blooded and deliberate than his previous kills, which were desperate and impulsive. He also had alternatives and chose not to take them. And he can't hide from what he's doing like with cooking where he just focuses on the chemistry. There was never one moment or even a transformation though.
@Jared_Wignall Жыл бұрын
Heisenberg was always inside of him. He just let himself embrace the dark side of him after he lived 50 years of doing the right thing and saw he didn’t get to see his full potential realized as he had hoped. With his diagnosis, he decided to gradually go all in on Breaking Bad, using his chemistry and knowledge to his advantage, make the greatest meth in the world, make millions of dollars and called the dark part of himself Heisenberg. It’s amazing to see where he began and where he ended up. Walter White’s journey is an amazing one, as is Jesse Pinkman’s and Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman. The Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe is one of the best in television history. Great video man!

i just find it funny that "becoming Heisenberg" is an idea we're all suddenly familiar with after watching the show, when its nothing more than a nickname on paper. its just an easily available term to convey a set of ideas about the main characters personalization that we pretty much NEED to do have any meaningful discussion about him. i wonder what we'd be saying if the name Heisenberg was never written into the show

A point to add is that the alter-ego's real world namesake Werner Heisenberg was famous for his work on Quantum Physics/Mechanics. He's specifically credited with the Uncertainty Principle that underpins a lot of it. So it's fair to speculate that one of the intended subtexts is that it's impossible to accurately measure at any given point the degree to which he is either Heisenberg or Walt and his trajectory along that path.
@Void7.4.1411 ай бұрын
This is one of the best analysis I've seen of this. Walt gave up and walked away every time just like Don Draper ran away and reinvented himself every time things got to be too much, the way Tony Soprano always reverted to an almost child-like humor or rage in similar situations, like Vic Mackey put on a smug smile as his world implodes so they'd never see em sweat, etc. Heisenberg was just another way for em to give up and walk away, a way to avoid reality as a character that doesn't actually exist. A coping mechanism for his preexisting antisocial personality traits.

There's a parallel here to The Sopranos, the viewers buy Tony's story that he was born into the life and not a bad person, he just does what he does to get by. Though by the end of that series we all realize he is evil, was all along. We were conned by his excuses. The same goes for Walter, he never turned into Heisenberg, an evil alter ego that kills, its all him, always had been, since he decided to cook the poison that ruins peoples lives and used his family as an excuse.

Nope. He was in a relationship with Gretchen and was intimidated and emasculated by her family's wealth and was so insecure he felt he could never be good enough for her. It is inferred that something happened between Walt and her brothers during a weekend getaway and he broke up with her without elaborating as to why. Shortly thereafter he meets Skylar and quickly knocks her up. Panicked walt sold his shares in the company to Gretchen in order to fund his life going forward.

Walt was always meant to be "an ordinary person transformed into a ruthless drug kingpin", I would say heisenberg is his kingpin version while walt is his boring family man version. Walt as a person was dissatisfied with living as walt, his wife was overbearing, controlling and didn't let him think for himself, his brother in law emasculated him, and he found out that his life will forever be a boring family man full of regret if he didn't change that. I'd say he's always slowly turning into heisenberg, but the point of no return comes way later, when he has nothing left about his home family life and the only thing he really has left is his drug empire, that's personally where I'd consider walt "becoming heisenberg".
