The best part about this Dilo, besides the gorgeous model and animation quality? It's 100% accurate by today's standards. The proportions are accurate. Using claws to dispatch prey - accurate. More bird-like vocalizations as opposed to roaring - oh, only about 10 years ahead of its time in that respect.

@@jacobcamacho5452 that is based on one article from 2007; all other papers before it argued for a predatory lifestyle. Sadly nobody has published a paper addressing the 2007 article claiming Dilophosaurus could fish, but given that the article is really just 3 bullet points from 12 years ago that looks at the superficial shape of Dilophosaurus' skull and arms, I wouldn't claim it is the strongest of hypotheses.

I have mixed feelings about the Dilophosaurus’ fictional portrayals in the Jurassic Park franchise. And I especially share your sentiment, when it comes to the real Carnotaurus versus Michael Crichton’s portrayal in The Lost World novel… By its own merits as a horror story monster, I really like the venom-spitting Dilophosaurus that Michael Crichton imagined. The novel’s version of Dennis Nedry’s death was particularly effective and freaky, in my opinion. However, given that it is meant to somewhat represent a dinosaur which naturally evolved and how sizable the real Dilophosaurus already was for its time, I find its venomous qualities to be out-of-place (whereas the Scorpius Rex was one of Dr. Wu’s far more monstrous and unnatural hybrids, which would better justify the presence of venom). I do not mind the movie version’s added frills as much, since some reptiles are known for having crazy display structures, especially birds. Regarding the Carnotaurus, I thought its chameleon-like camouflage was even more out-of-place, since that felt antithetical to the very qualities that make the real Carnotaurus unique. Carnotaurus is now known to be built like the medium theropods’ equivalent to a cheetah, sprinting after prey at short bursts of high speeds to chase them down. When that feature is combined with its crests resembling a pair of bull horns, Carnotaurus can act as high-speed predator that hits like a car, which is already unique enough. In my opinion, portraying Carnotaurus as a slow-moving predator, that needs to camouflage itself and wait for prey to come close, does not complement the real one’s features. That is why I prefer how the movies approached this, giving the ability instead to the Indominus Rex as one of its many unnatural qualities.

I really love how mechanical the roar sounds. Considering birds can make really weird noises, it's nice to see people get creative with Dino sound design. I know that Dinosaurs didn't really roar, but it would be nice to see more people think outside the box and use more than just elephant, crocodile, and big cat sounds.

I wish that a toy model was released, based on THIS exact reconstruction of Dilophosaurus alone. The scutes on its back, the tough wrinkles and folds on its skin, the heaviness that applies to its body... including the strength in its legs, and its solid feet. This cgi model had really good detail. I prefer this reconstruction over the J.P. one by a mile.

I wanted this exact thing when I was a kid! Obviously it didn't exist, but my parents got me this one pokemon plush that looked kind of like a Dilophosaurus, in a big and little variation like they show here. That was a pretty decent compromise, but I don't know if I still have them EDIT: I looked it up, the Pokemon was Treecko, and I saw something that the final form of Treecko (Sceptile) is based on a Dilophosaurus, but I don't know if that's true

I think the documentary's filmmakers intentionally wanted to show Dilophosaurus this way with the large size, aggressive nature & shrilling roar. Therefore, they could show the viewers that this dinosaurs didn't need the fictional features from Jurassic Park (i.e. neck frill & venom spitting) to be interesting or intimidating.

@riamus7258
@riamus7258 5 жыл бұрын
I mean, given how there's no evidence to prove to disprove it, how does anyone know it didn't have a frill and venom? The answer is, we actually don't. It works as speculation, so it's fine to show Dilophosaurus like that. If you want, you can even do that with a Tyrannosaurus and it would be fine to do that.
@iacovosledu4946

@@riamus7258 I mean, the frill would have needed some elements of bony structure supporting it, as well as musculature, so the frill is inaccurate as per Brennington, 1996 (people.hofstra.edu/J_B_Bennington/publications/JPerrors.html). As for venomous saliva... I don't think that is technically inaccurate, no.

@@iacovosledu4946 In order to use venom, animals have to have specialized delivery systems, whether it be the Fangs of a snake, the Spines of a Scorpionfish, or the Stinger of a wasp. Apparently the Dilophosaurus in the book was more like this, though it still spit venom. Apparently, the filmmakers wanted to explore the idea of dinosaurs having soft tissue structures that wouldn't fossilize, which is kind of cool, but doing it with Dilophosaurus is a bit odd. Why would it have a frill - a display structure - when it already had crests... a display structure?
