Thanks for watching! Yes grit is very important. Not only are they getting grit out of our sandy loam soil, I also throw a handful out once a week for them to graze/peck.

my chickens are exactly 5 mos old and no eggs yet. We live in the desert and it's hot now. could that be what is preventing them from laying eggs? We've had them since Feb so they grew up with the weather changing, I figure they are acclimated still, is there something I can do to get them to lay eggs? Rhode Islands and Ameraucanas. Thank you! I've set up everything you've noted and more and they have everything they need but my chickens are 5 months old and still haven't laid their first egg. The nest boxes are clean with fresh hay every week with fake ceramic eggs in them, so maybe soon!

Thumbs up, good video! Just remember, they're hiding their eggs over there. Also you are correct if you are saying that your chickens are specifically bred production hybrids, ie Golden Comets, Sapphire Gems, etc, ( 16-18 weeks) or even a few top layer true breeds, Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds (18 - 22 weeks), but most heavy dual purpose breeds, Wyandottes, Barnevelders, etc will take 6 - 8 months to begin laying. It would be better to go by individual breed, than generalize.

Hi Brad, new chicken mom here... my Silver Laced Wyandotte layed her first egg at the e d of 19 weeks, 2ns the next day. She is little and so the eggs. Not sure all Wyandotte chicks are the same. And I might have missed some because I've been looking for blue eggs, lol

Hi! This is a great video. I have 9 chickens. two of them are golden comets, two of them are california tans, the rest I'm not expecting for them to lay until later. But, the Golden comets and California tans should be laying, why aren't they laying? They are maybe about 16, 17, 18 (not sure) weeks. and they have a box in there that will work for now, but we are currently in the process of building them nicer nesting boxes. I'm so excited for the first egg! :)

@@farmmom7140 No problem! This was a great video. Yes, they started laying a week after I wrote my other message..(lol) I did switch them to a layer feed when they turned about 16 weeks. We get three eggs a day, they are so delicious! Now we are down to 7 chickens, though... :(

Hey I just started following your channel and I’m so glad I found you you answered so many questions in just one videos that me and my husband had about our chickens lol! We are first time chicken owners and this is all new to us but anyways I have a question I’m about to start giving my chickens the egg laying feed that you were talkin about in your video so is it ok for my rooster to eat that same food or is that only for the girls! Thanks for watching and welcome to my channel! Adult roosters can eat layer feed if they are living with chickens who are fed layer feed as their normal diet. The layer feed does not have any harmful effects on adult roosters. They get all the required nutrients from the feed. Make sure your rooster is at least 18 weeks of age. At that point they are considered suitable for eating layer feed. The extra calcium will not harm them.

@@farmmom7140 I don't know exact and breed as I purchased it from a seller in the street. It is mixed (cross ) breed of wild and perhaps austrolorp, is black in colour and other one seems cross of rir and wild. Each weighs about 1.5 kg.

Ruthie what breed? Sometimes the variety of bird can vary when they lay eggs. How is there environment?
