The 80s was a tremendous decade for watching NBA basketball especially on Sunday afternoons on CBS. Boston,Philly,and Milwaukee were loaded with talent for 7 of those 10 years. Atlanta and Detroit were also on the rise in the eastern conference. Good defense and not so much traveling going on all the time. None of this 135-133 scores either. Set plays and physical defense were the norm along with great effort. Miss the good old days.

@threerings1345
@threerings1345 Жыл бұрын
People assume Larry Bird always lacked athleticism, but early in Larry's career he ran hard and fast, regularly beating opponents down court for layups and open looks. Unfortunately, as he was entering his prime injuries began to hinder Bird's quickness. He compensated by improving from superior to lethal from the perimeter, and keeping a step ahead through his unmatched basketball IQ.

The thumbnail for this video was not from this game. In the game from the thumbnail, Larry Bird was embarrassing Dr. J. It was something like Bird had 30 points, and Erving had 6. Erving bridged Bird, Larry fell on his back, and Erving walked away without trying to help him up, or even apologize. No one knows what was said, but next thing you know, Erving had Larry in a chokehold, then was throwing two right crosses at his face (while his teammate, I think it was Moses Malone, had Larry in a headlock). It was the most surreal thing I ever saw in the NBA, because Julius Erving was the face of the NBA, and was always a true gentleman on and off the court. It had to be one of his most embarrassing moments on the court. He and Bird have put it behind them, and have never publicly discussed it since.

I'll have to rewatch games. When the stereotype about white dudes was prevalent in terms of their lack of athleticism, I might have believed that back then but I think Bird could d J. If he never did, it must've been a strategic decision because Bird's d is 10 times that of McHale.

I was a Big Nate Archibald fan, I was also a Big Oscar Robertson fan. I watched them play at the Cincinnati Gardens and I watched them Practice in a Gym in the Summer time. I didn't know Archibald got hurt with a minute to go. ML Carr made some great plays down the stretch. I was happy to see Archibald go back in, Carr stayed in and Bird was really Amazing. It's Ironic, because Dave Cowens was unbelievable when he played with the Celtics in his days. I love Basketball. I've been following it since I was a Boy. I watched Lew Alcindor win it four years in a row with UCLA. Now I'm hoping the Bruins do it again because of Coach Cronin who was with my Cincinnati Bearcats. What's not to love about the old Great Games with Great players. I moved to Miami in 2006 to see the Heat win it all. That was beautiful. I've been a Heat Fan since 1998 when my Mom and Dad moved to South Florida. I moved back to Cincinnati. Sports is really fun to watch, but it's even better when you're team wins!

Greatest game in NBA history. Could have only been better if cheeks makes both for an overtime. Mr Julius Erving and Mr Larry Bird.

Someone that was sitting court side at a game said Larry greatly disrespected Julius. I believe he called Julius old and “ you should have retired”

Yeah this guy Larry was a problem, just when you thought the lead was comfortable, or when you that you had him figured out, he would just start destroying your whole defense.

@@SP0RTYinCA That's very nice of you to point that out but who cares ? Philly had already beaten the Celtics a few times as well. That wasn't the point of the statement I made. The point was Moses put a stop to the 6ers falling short period. They got over the hump and won the title. They went down as 1 of the best teams not just that season but in HISTORY !

Moses beat the Celtics in 1983, then the Celtics went to finals 4 straight years, so not much of a difference.

In this era of basketball (the hand check era), playoff games carried the weight and energy of tip top prize fights. I remember this game. Felt horrible for Doc. He came in 2nd nearly as many times a Jerry West. They won SO, so much. It was cathartic when they both finally won ONE. "Hated", feared and respected Bird and The Celtics at the time, but love and respect them in the retired, rear-view mirror. They were some DAWGS! Celtics would clown you in a blowout and literally laugh and high-five all the way to the locker room. This almost makes me ill to re-live it, but it's fascinating.
