Dan Ariely is an Israeli American professor of psychology and behavioral economics. He teaches at Duke University and is the founder of The Center for Advanced Hindsight and also the co-founder of BEworks.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. I will say, that when he said he added the balsamic vinegar to the beer - I immediately thought I would probably want that one more. Intuitively I knew (or predicted, as he was speaking) that, “I would like that it was a different “twang” in taste. But AS SOON as he said he TOLD the people what the difference was , and I imagine myself being one of those people too , of course I would hate it. I would spit it out. But it’s because they took the “mystery” out of it, and instead told me and OTHER participants what it was , who I knew would also have this knowledge. This “unsophisticated “ change made it undesirable. Like why cake mix didn’t sell in the 50s per one of his other videos, is my confident and educated surmise. (I’m very self aware how my body and mind react , even ridiculously. Which is why I watch videos like this , to educate myself to change my body reaction, which results in a much happier satisfying life. We are ALL given a slightly “imperfect” life to fix, even despite being given mostly desired circumstances, relatively speaking.) What’s interesting is that I wish it was never said. I was able to tell at the moment in his story telling , that I “would like the taste”, except that then they flat out said, “it was balsamic vinegar”. At this point, I would have been aware they told the same fact in the same manner to others in such “unrefined , blatant” manner , that they ruined it for me. This reminds me that someone in the news in the last 2 weeks, got punched in the face for giving away the ending to the Avengers Endgame movie, to the people in line waiting to see the premiere, as he exited. It is clear to me at least that people actually DID like the taste. I am not a betting person, and yet I would bet that in reality , the ones who liked it until they were TOLD it was balsamic vinegar , are sometimes still adding balsamic to their beer at home, in private, without judgement. It is also clear that I would have preferred it have been “MARKETED” in a different way during the experiment. Had you told me, “we added a unique house recipe” involving lemon juice and “balsamic hints” , it would have went over much more well. my gal pals and I just wanted to dance and we had no money so we would buy one beer (so we wouldn't get kicked out) and keep filling it with water from the bathroom. We even knew to wipe away the condensation on the bottle because the label gets soggy after a while and we did not want the attention. We eventually figured out that they just came down on the guys who cheated and not the girls. This is 1980 something. Now no one dances or dates, it is full on heavy relationships which I don't get for young people. (Don't start me on the cell phone thing). Getting ready for going out "on the town" was always better than the actual experience. Indeed it is the anticipation that gets you all worked up and that makes sense that you start to experience joy long before anything truly joyful happens. So one can then exprapolate that the search for prince charming who likely is not out there (or is maybe) is all about thinking about finding him first. Usually we all ended up at the end of the night in my friend Barb's hot tub (without water) with our makeup all smeared eating digestive cookies with icecream in the middle and crying. Not me. I knew that my night in shining armour would arrive "normal looking" and wearing a tin foil hat. That or with a pen protector and a chip on his glasses or something and "flooder pants" (too short). Think "potential" ladies. Future time think who is gonna be there to pick up the kid at the day care or when the kid is crying in the night (yes, you wil have kids) that he doesn't just roll over and asks you to do something. Do not look for a "Peter Pan Man" neither or you will be his mother. So if you want that "deal" /arrangement and you both agree on that then that is your business or division of labour. Just talk about it ahead of time. Omg. "money". I hate this stuff but I unnderstand that it can solve problems some times. Talk about your living expectations so that you are not either one of you disappointed. Talk about work ethic. Don't go for your clone (I think I am onto another video with another topic of Dan's which is here somewhere on the right. Geez, how many videos are there? Wow. ~~Super human! -Just needs a cape, tights and to wear his underpants on the outside. Done. lol ;)

SILLYHEART21 - this excerpt reminds me that I was 5 years old in 1985 , and i knew that I already hated the 80s at the time. In secret , I’m proud of myself for that . 😂😂😂 Especially knowing how I live and what I know now in retrospect . I’m trying to say that I get what you mean. But you might have still got to enjoy it much more than I. The 80s were just filled with ways that lead you to a dead end, it felt . God , I’m so much happier that life and style evolved so much more quickly ever since.

I'm really curious to know how someone figured out that beer + balsamic vinegar = tastier beer. I'm even more curious to know how they figured it out without falling into the trap of the expectation goggles.
