They did mention that someone would be coming around to pick the two of them up. Presumably, a report was sent about their actions and how they resulted in someone dying. So, it's likely that picking them up means detaining them to take them to trial. Leaving them in the menagerie until then, is just a karmic cherry on top.

I thought it was an access panel. My understanding was the humans discovered that part of one of the walls was a maintenance access panel, pulled it off (but apparently couldn’t figure out how to securely reinstall it) and hotwired the hatch controls for the Moopsey habitat. This likely means they could have escaped from their own habitat anytime they wanted.
