I like how calm Reinhard is. Like a person that knows he's going to be gone soon but has accepted it.

Again, I remember one of the last scenes with Friedrich when he told his chancellor Liechtenlade that he was well aware of Lohengram's plans and ambitions, and was simply trying to make HIS EMPIRE die as quickly and gracefully as possible, without much torment. What if Reinhard, not being sure of the future of his state, did something similar? Just remember that when he died, he bequeathed to his son to achieve those heights that he himself aspired to, and not just inherit them by birthright. It is possible that Reinhard was already planning to determine the future of the galaxy in the course of political competition.

Meanwhile in the alternate dimension, we get to see Yang and Kircheis are the ones who are chatting on the table while Reinhard and Julian are dead.

That would be a very interesting development. By the way, if we consider Emil as the ghost of Kircheis (due to the general significance in the life of Reinhard and the approximate similarity), then someone similar to Reinhard could be present at this meeting. For some reason, I like to think that such a meeting could take place on Iserlohn, as happened in the first season, when Yang and Kircheis shook hands and exchanged prisoners of war.J

Whenever I see this scene I can't help but notice the spacing of the chairs suggests that four could sit at the table, in another time, in another place, they all could've been there.

It's not an unappealing image, but of course if Yang or Kircheis had to choose between that result and the one we got, you know which one either of them would choose. And they'd each do it in a heartbeat.

Like all things of nuance that people don't understand, Julian is suggesting constitutional monarchy to the Emperor. An Emperor who reigns, but does not rule, keeps a check on politicians who might have selfish motives in rising to the top through republican offices and seizing power, for all power in the end comes from the Emperor, or the electors of the populace. The limits on the Emperor's power constrains him from acting in tyranny, for his power has been vested in the Prime Minister, who is chosen along with representatives by the people that the Emperor reigns over. The cultural power and conditioning of this divided system works well in countries with this model (the UK, Japan, the Commonwealth). It's their version of separation of powers, and it nicely deals with the *cultural* desire to accumulate more power (How can you? The Emperor rules all. But he can't do anything without the people's consent.) You will never be better than others.

The model Julian is proposing is not the "modern" constitutional monarchy, basically a de facto republic with a powerless monarch. It's the 19th Century constitutional monarchy, based on a costitution wrote and given by the monarch himself (and not by people elected to do so), that keeps a considerable power (total control of armed forces, foreign policy, right to freelry nominate the Prime Minister, althought based on the composition of the representatives elected by the people). Given the german inspiration of the Empire, it's basically an idea to turn the 18th Century absolutistic Prussia into the 19th Century constitutional (but still heavily controlled by the military) German Empire.

Ahah, but what is menacing the Empire is exactly what rotten the Goldenbaum dynasty : you can't control what will happen to the following leaders. They will be autocratic emperors, without the "genius" of Reinhard, and with no counterpower or legitimacy. From what i have read from Yoshiki Tanaka, he trusts the idea of the great "dictator" in a antique roman dimension : a great man, which legitimacy comes from his exploit and not a bloodline, solving the problems during a short time, and then leaving slowly a healed democracy continue. Julian Mintz is creating this democratic transition, avoiding the Lohengram to be like the Goldenbaum. I don't support at all this idea ahah, but what a great anime 😩

@@banko-xv4rt fascism is a reaction to bad governance. If the system in place loses its legitimacy amongst the support of the people, then people within that system will seek to topple it as quickly as possible. This is only possible through a consolidation and centralizing of power. If you want to avoid fascism you need to create and support a system that strives to benefit the most people possible. If you fail in this goal then the cycle repeats. democracy or authoritarianism does not matter at the end of the day if the system fails to support and be supported by the people. The FPA failed because its government lost the support of enough people who mattered and undermined its ability to continue, the Lohengram dynasty of the Galactic Empire succeeded because it had the support of its people. The reality is that most people suck at being moral or making choices that support them and their neighbors in the longterm over short term gains. Politicians only have to care about the next election, good monarchs in theory need to care about leaving everything in a strong enough and stable state to be passed to another generation of rulers. I think given the chaos of the modern geopolitcal landscape you can likely expect some large countries to balkanize in the next few generations and some "monarchies" to sweep in to fill the power vacuum
