Asuka has gone on to state that she asked for it. Minoru was one of her idols, and beyond that she felt that if she could handle his stiff wrestling style she would become to female version of strong style. Minoru has been wrestling a very long time and has yet to cause a serious injury. His style is brutal, but he takes care of his opponents.

Asuka's refusal to settle for the joshi status quo not only made her a great heel, but also gave her the opportunity to go to WWE and become, ironically, probably the most famous joshi in history. Much like how Rey Mysterio is famous worldwide and is the face (or rather, the mask) that people think of when talking about lucha, Asuka is the face of Japanese women's wrestling for anyone who isn't from Japan or a highly engaged smark.
@duckmercy11

Tbh Chigusa Nagayo was probably more famous just within Japan than Asuka is worldwide, ditto for El Santo over Mysterio in Mexico. I get the point you're making but I think WWE fans fail to grasp the enormity of just how big certain non-WWE stars were in the pre-internet days. Yes, WWE has global reach but is fairly niche nowadays and unfortunately the average person on the street couldn't tell you who Asuka is, whether here in NYC or even her hometown Osaka. The Crush Gals on the otherhand were true celebrities and even got NBC News to cover them, plus Vince brought them over for house shows at MSG and Boston Garden where they popped crowds.

@@jimjaspers3050 I would say yes. Due to only seeing them on KZbin it's a little tough to remember names, but I remember watching one match a joshi legend had against Aja Kong as her retirement match. The whole hardcore deal. "Electrified" barbed wire instead of ropes, and all. Not big weapons, not their style. No fake blood though, either. This woman was held up to Godess status. Even Aja Kong broke character at the end and bowed to her. That would be equivalent to Ric Flair hugging an opponent. Unthinkable.

One VERY big detail ommitted from this story is that this match was the last show for Kana Pro Wrestling, as Asuka had already announced that she was coming over to the U.S. One other thing is that Asuka had worked intergender matches regularly in her company and almost always booked herself to lose. The Minoro beatdown was just because she wanted something extra memorable for Kana Pro's final show.
@Sevicify
@Sevicify 9 ай бұрын
Actually this wasn't the last Kana Pro show, there were five shows after this with the last happening 15 months later. She would also go on to team with Minoru in another intergender match against Shuri and Yoshiaki Fujiwara on the following show 4 months after this one, a match that they would lose when she was pinned by Shuri. Her match on the final show was a 6-person tag match with Kana, Shuri and Hikaru Shida against Arisa Nakajima, Ryo Mizunami and Rina Yamashita which Kana's team won.

So, in short: Asuka wanted to put on a show which seemed real, and didn't want her opponent to pull his punches - and she acted it out so well that people actually believed it was real, while she suffered no injury or adverse effects at all. She always wanted to be part of men's wrestling, and fulfilled her own wish at the end of her Japanese run, going up against one of her idols and delivering a brutal, memorable fight, which is the opposite of what she criticized women's wrestling for (being to stylized and focused on good looks). I don't know man, sounds like "intergender wrestling gone right" to me.

This is an uncomfortable match to watch, but Kana booked it and it turned out exactly the way she wanted. Suzuki is one of the most terrifying heels in the business, but he is also a respectful professional and while this looks absolutely horrifying, he is in no ways taking liberties. For all that it's a difficult match to watch, it did exactly what Kana booked it to do, and did so extremely successful. It made Suzuki look like a cruel and brutal bastard, and it made Kana look as tough as nails for taking it for as long as she did. The fact that we are still talking about it years later, and that Suzuki is still taking bookings for intergender matches hoping for something half as effective as this one, is a testament to its success.

Show me a single intergender headbutt that you can hear from the main camera. I think she asked him to do something she couldn't handle and had no way to mediate it once that choice was made. There's nothing professional about repeated stiffs to the head. The visceral soap opera of a pro wrestling heel doesn't circumvent law and order just because the fans are all in on kayfabe now. Wrestling fans repeat trivia like truth, even though we also know pro wrestlers are at best thespians and at worst con artists. But they're certainly not honest people. Their stories change over time and there seems to be a lot of pressure to say what you're told to say when you're in the moment. To be fair though, if this was truly an unwanted assault, when he would have dropped his guard to taunt her she would have just gouged one of his eyes out. Maybe it was planned, but it certainly wasn't professional. She's either a victim or an idiot.

@@danloweIt is professional, if it's what the promoter (Asuka) said should happen and you do it you're being professional if not you're not being professional. If there is one thing I know about Joshis, they're insanely tough. If you have ever seen the bumps Minami Toyota put her self through, Megumi Kudo putting her body through fire, barbed wire and explosives you will know these women have a tolerance for pain many men might not even have. The Joshis in Zenjo arguably took things way harder then the men did back in the 80s and 90s. Chaprita Asari got her nose broken live on RAW back in 1995 by Aja Kong and after that match all the "boys" in the locker room were up in arms over how brutal that match was. Intergender wrestling is a lot more common in Japan then it is here. Saki Akai is a good example of a women that wrestles exclusively for a male promotion.

Wrestling fans keep on going on about how they want equal treatment for female wrestlers, then they complain when female wrestlers CHOOSE to be in violent matches. Like the various bloody women's matches in AEW. No one forced those women to be in those matches. They chose to be, just like Mick Foley and Terry Funk chose to be in bloody matches decades ago. Terry and Mick are legends for their violent matches, but some wrestling fans want to go on a moral crusade when women chose to be in violent matches.

@@edencieslowski9310they aren't girls lol, they're professional female wrestlers and if they asked for it, then..well. I suppose it's on them. But for both Suzuki and trips, neither one really injured the female they were working with. Intergender matches can *LOOK* absolutely brutal at times, but in most cases the males working with them are pretty safe with the female, and almost always concerned about the wellbeing...even if it doesn't always look like it. Men may be physically stronger than women (biologically)but that in no way means that women are not tough as all hell with absurd levels of pain tolerance.

Honestly Suzuki is actually a very very kind person outside of the ring and very respectful, so I don’t doubt he probably did do everything he could to try and talk her out of it or at least warned her what she was asking for. But she probably just didn’t care and was going to go through with it no matter what he said. But honestly in the end this worked out exactly how she wanted it to, it gave her a reason to get written off screen for her to go to wwe and take her big chance which paid off and it gave Suzuki even more heat and hatred than he already had and gave him more legitimacy as well. In terms of booking it’s actually quite genius but definitely shouldn’t be replicated in my opinion. But another female wrestler that made her name in hardcore intergender matches is actually Candice larae she is actually a big pioneer for women’s wrestling in my opinion and very underrated.

Since it's planned, and she could have told him to stop during the match or else tap or not kick out to make the match end, I think Asuka/Kana knew what she could or couldn't take. Clearly Suzuki can control himself, as he was still playing the character throughout along and not in a blind rage. He stuck around afterwards to raise her hand. It's brutal and something we as fans don't want to see, but I think both of them were in complete control. He would have stopped if she told him to, that's the take away. If he was really going nuts, the others in the ring could have overpowered him by numbers, or else the other men wouldn't have just laid dead from a hip toss. I’ve been a proud Asuka simp since like 2010. I stumbled upon her matches on KZbin and I was like, “Yo! Who the hell is this?! She wrestles like a dude!” She was amazing. And I’m very happy that she came to WWE and had such an amazing career there. Would I have preferred that they gave her the ‘98 Goldberg treatment on the main roster and made her champion for a year and won at Wrestlemania? Yes, obviously. But she’s had a wildly successful career there. Royal Rumble winner, Money in the Bank winner, multiple time singles champion, tag team champion (and best women’s tag team champion), and she barely speaks English. That’s crazy that they keep using her so prominently despite the language barrier. And I watched what women’s wrestling was in the 2000s where it was an after thought and they were constantly pushing models who wrestled badly. You had like Mickie James, Melina, Beth Phoenix, and Michelle McCool and everyone else was trash. And if you think the others weren’t trash, it’s because you were too young to know better or too single to care. Asuka’s WWE career is miles better than any of the top women’s careers in the 2000s. It’s better than most men’s. Asuka is the Booker T of the WWE Women’s division. Crazy talented wrestler that can fit in any role you give her from random tag team to main eventer. Had a killer career but was so good that you wish they had a John Cena career, even though they’re easily Hall of Fame material that nobody with a brain would question.

This is kayfabe nonsense. We can't trust our eyes because the most dishonest people on earth told us a story about it going to plan. Pro wrestlers stories change all the time. Standards change all the time. It was unprofessional to let Asuka's ego risk her life. OR it was unprofessional to stiff her that much just because the match called for it. She clearly can't go punch for punch with a heavy weight. This isn't a testament to why she belongs there but a reminder about her fragility. She's done enough other athletic stuff to forget this but it was incredibly stupid the way it was run. I simply can't believe Asuka would ever take this beating IRL. She'd run, she'd throw stuff in his eyes, stab him or (now that she's in the US) shoot him. It was nothing but a parable of failure.

He could have permanently disabled her before anyone could intervene, which could happen in any match. But particularly one where your shoot is a beatdown, you've got to show more head and neck care than this. We can respect her willpower without getting in line to support her terrible decision making. She gets a brain injury and her story and legend ends before it starts.

Also the way she stiffed him back without making a dent just reinforced how much leverage a smaller person needs to confront a larger person. Every other time I've seen retaliatory stiffs it was a message to the other wrestler that they're going too far. That's what disgusted me. In terms of the mythology and cultural message, maybe it did show that a woman can shoot with anyone but it definitely didn't reinforce they could go 'toe to toe' with them. It seemed to punctuate the argument that women are out of their league when it comes to trained H2H combat.

The fact of the matter is that Asuka took the bumps from one of the most notorious heels in the business and is perfectly fine. Because it's a performance. Yes, some bumps in the ring hurt, but that's true no matter what the gender of the people in the ring. Furthermore, there are plenty of matches between men where it's just a beat down from a perceived stronger opponent vs underdog. Almost every Lesnar match was exactly that, until recently.

Very interesting. It's crazy to know that Asuka wanted him to do this. You can even see where she really starts hitting him pretty hard to get him to hit her harder.

"Im not even puting, Western values on Japanese wrestling" he says after describing that she booked and planned this fight. Even encouraging him it was okay after he didn't want to. Yeah, definitely not putting, "Western values" on it...

Its not as abusive as posted. Asuka knew EXACTLY where she was when getting piledriven. She grabbed his knees to support herself thru the move.

When I was younger, and first getting into wrestling, I actually got to meet Asuka at a meet & greet she did in my town. Being so young, the only question I asked her was “was it hard getting to become a wrestler?”. Her answer was yes… I think she was putting it lightly though.

It's a testament to their skills as wrestlers that they were able to sell everyone on the brutality. The fact that people thought it was going too far, despite Asuka not actually sustaining serious injuries, is impressive.

She definitely earned everything she has now but I can’t imagine that she knew it would be that bad going against Minoru. She’s said she asked for it but no one can convince me that she was prepared for something that harsh. People say wrestling is “fake” and it is but only to an extent lots of wrestlers get real injuries

After Stone Cold Steve Austin retired from professional wrestling, I lost interest. The _"talent"_ seemed to have forgotten what professional wrestling was all about. Nobody told stories in the ring anymore. Nobody sold finishing moves anymore. Everyone wanted to be the biggest and baddest of the bad asses. The staff they hired to write stories didn't know anything about professional wrestling, except what they saw on TV. They had no idea how to put an ass in each seat. Then came along, Asuka! When I first saw her in NXT, I had to know more about her. Any match she had in Japan, I watched... if it was online. She reawakened my love for it; and I've been following professional wrestling since the mid-1970's. This kid can perform! She knows the moves. She knows how to sell. She knows how to make her opponents look good. She knows how to tell a story in the ring. She understands the value of suspension of disbelief, without crossing the line into the ridiculous or sublime. She respects the business! In my opinion, she deserves to be mentioned in the pantheon of all-time greatest professional wrestlers. Not just female professional wrestlers! All of them! Men and women!

Im alright with it, asuka showed her toughness. The one legged cancer survivor Zach Gowen got demolished by Brock Lesner. But in reality most wrestlers would also, so is it too far to have Brock in wrestling at all? The young bucks put thumbtacks in their shoes and superkicked candice lerae, but thats what she wanted, and in the indies she was one of the most respected females in the locker room. But also candice broke johnny garganos jaw in a match, thats spousal abuse in reverse right?

I see where youre coming from, wrestling is worked i get it. Thing is with all those examples that you mentioned, they dont actually happen in real life. Domestic assault is an in real life issue and many people have experienced it first hand either being the victim or seeing it happen between their parents. I could totally understand when intergender wrestling rubs people the wrong way like when it goes too far like in this match between asuka and minoru.

@@AgeOfWrestling did you think rock hitting ken shamrock in the face with a chair was too far? How about Triple H vs mick Foley where mick was taking chair shots while handcuffed? Would you say it was taken too far what happened to Maven at his first rumble. I'm just trying to gauge what's too far for you? Also you never said if what Brock did was too far.

@@AgeOfWrestling also, if you're trying to say that seeing this on TV can be a trigger for people who have experienced it in real life, what about guys that have been jumped and beaten by multiple guys throughout highschool? It's extremely common for groups to jump and brutalize others in wrestling, to have their clothes stripped off them, to be spray painted. I'm sure that could be very triggering for some who dealt with similar situations in high school.

@@AgeOfWrestling but all in all, this makes me respect both wrestlers even more. Asuka refused to be treated any different than any other wrestler due to her sex, she felt she deserved the same respect as a man. She is the top person of the promotion, the booker, and demanded to be treated as such. She was showing all men throughout wrestling that she deserves the same respect as the top men in the industry. Then Suzuki treating asuka with the respect the booker deserves, showing her that he will do what's asked of him, and not letting her sex determine how she should be treated. He would do this to any man on the indies that would ask him to, as long as he could tell they can handle it through the process.

you know i see where you're coming from and i believe that intergender wrestling can be good when done right, i really enjoyed the tessa vs sami calihan programme in impact a few years back. but this was just too far for me, i dont want to see a woman getting beat up by a man to this extent, even if its wrestling. All those moments you mentioned are uncomfortable in their own right. But this takes the cake for me, first time i watched this incident my stomach was literally churning. I'm not sure why i had such a visceral response to this incident but it didnt sit right with me and i didnt like it. and thats fair. this is why intergender is so controversial because youre making sense with your points, but i just dont want to see it reach this extent. @@Ironmike341

A female wrestler asking her male opponent to actually beat her ass in the ring because he’s her hero and said make wrestler reluctantly doing it and having more respect for her afterwards is the most Japanese thing ever.

I **want** to say that I have no issues with intergender wrestling because since it's all scripted anyway, there's no issues with it. However, wrestling doesn't happen in a vacuum. It's impossible to escape the real world context when we watch matches, and when you see a more physically-imposing man beating on a much-smaller woman, it...well, as you say, it looks like domestic abuse. It's something that is far too real to far too many people, especially women fans. The best way to avoid this would be to have the women get the upper hand on the men somehow, that would make it cathartic to see the proverbial script be flipped, but this makes it too predictable for fans. This is why in WWE--outside of Randy Orton for some reason I don't understand--you only ever see women taking potshots at men, taunting them, or doing dirty tricks on them, so you can avoid seeing match-ups that stray too close to reality. Even with the catharsis angle, no one wants to see a woman get beaten up or physically intimidated by a bigger man. It's uncomfortable. As a man, I've been domestically abused myself but I came out stronger for it. But despite that, I'm 5'8"/175cm with broad shoulders; I don't have to worry about my stature making me a potential target for random creepy dirtbags. I rather consistently spook my women coworkers when I appear too suddenly or quietly around them...because too many women have had experiences of being intimidated, harassed or worse by men. That's why even though I wish we could see more intergender wrestling matches, it does too often just stray into uncomfortable territory.

She told him to do it against his wishes/judgement. He couldnt refuse cause she was the booker/promoter. So the problem wasn't intergender wrestling, it was that a woman was in charge and didnt know what she was doing, and wouldn't listen to the male veterens telling her thats a bad idea. #Facts
