Rudy thanks for buying my product. Keep making awesome videos. For everyone concerned and talking trash...I sold because I wanted to turn it into some legacy staples I'm able to get on the cheap. I own a small business, and time is money, hence why I was willing to take a larger hit, about 28% to Rudy on my sealed product, which is not much more than the 18-25% you'd lose selling stuff individually on TCG player with way more time invested. I understand buy and hold very well, this is just for fun, it's ultimately not a real investment strategy for my future.

Well as along as Rudy +Alpha Investments doesn't care, Rudy feel free to take it down if you want. I paid the following... Avacyn - $163.35 BFZ - $110.99 Conspiracy: Take the Crown - $63.95 Conspiracy - $89.37 Dark Ascension - $103.46 Dragon's - $85.19 Eldritch - $68.98 Fallen Empires - $109.25 Fate Reforged - $76.34 From the Vault - $35.11 Gatecrash - $53.44 Innistrad - $272.82 Khans - $99.26 M14 - $86.21 Oath - $78.57 Origins - $91.40 Planechase - $92.57 Return to Ravnica - $84.41 Shadows - $69.30 That should about cover it. Those are average prices, a few boxes here and there, maybe 6 total from my LGS that skew the average prices a bit.

How is that "product diversification" if all he invested in was WotC product, all with a long time frame and a substantial risk if it ever goes up? What if he needs money? No short term assets in here. What if WotC reprints the living shit out of the game? No non-WotC products here. You are making the same mistake as the dude ho had to sell. You think you spread the risk, while actually you are all-in on one product category. This dude wasn't financially stable, but though he should invest in long term stuff. That's just a disaster.

Everything was bought in the lat 20 months or so, when I got back into MTG. So for instance the Innistrad box was $270. About 20 of the boxes I got for around $63 on special sales. Very little was bought at my LGS because they charge $118 a box. Most boxes were in the $70-90 range. From The Vaults were all under $40.

I think things goes horribly wrong at the point, when you decided to invest in something like collectable card games in the way presented. If you want to invest in something, better pick something else. Numismatic valuable coins, for example. Prices on those shows stable growth. Or you can open game store. That way investing in MTG would be perfectly normal. And you would be able to put 1-2 boxes per set into hybernation for years, in case prices eventualy rocket.

Hello, I was thinking of opening an online MTG selling store, I was wondering how much you actually save buying from a distributor. I know they say around 45-47 percent of MSRP but I have rarely seen a box sell for anywhere near MSRP prices. So lets say a box sells on ebay for 100 dollars, what on average would be the cost from a wholesale distributor? I am guessing about 80 dollars? So maybe only a profit of 20 dollars a box?

I remember reading a new computer gaming mag and seeing one of the first adverts for Magic announcing its forthcoming and wondering what it was. As a non-player I'm still not totally sure what it is all about but it seems to be more betting on the future $$$ value of cards than playing an actual card game.....

You know a game/collectibles have gone terribly wrong when people start talking about about "investing" in the merchandise. Why not actually invest in a business? A merchandise hoarding business doesn't count. That is one of the reasons that the hobby or game that these people play or do is so expensive.... because of hoarders like that. It artificially inflates the market for that hobby.
@SOLtoo

is MTG in a bubble right now? I saw the same thing in comics (late 80's, early 90's) when producers started raising prices to outrageous levels (double masters VIP packs anyone?) then they flooded the market with all of the alternate cover issues to get collectors and investors to buy even more (regular, foil, textless and box-topper editions, anyone?) What happened is they forced a huge percentage of their buyers out of the market and next thing you know -> downward spiral that ended in bankruptcy and a TON of comic shops that had been open for 20, 30 even 40 years closing. Word of warning Hasbro: don't do us dirty!
@MrDeathbydying
@MrDeathbydying 4 жыл бұрын
That's how I look at it. The one thing MTG has going for it, is that players as well as collectors are after cards. Bayou is expensive as a collectable, but also because it is needed for a competitive deck. As long as WOTC doesn't get so predatory with their business practices as to turn away the whole player base, the practical cards at least should hold some value

The difference isn't nearly as much as you think. Even fairly big shops pay $82-84 for regular draft boosters, when anyone can buy them after they're off allocation for $90. The margins are tiny.

This is why you need emergency funds. Have enough to pay bills for 6 months. It takes some time to build it, but in the long run you will be better off by reducing risk. Emergency funds protect your investments. If shit happens and you need cash it is much better to pull from a money market account than have to liquidate a long term asset that has not reached expected ROI. Also, if you have more in an emergency fund, you can lower you insurance premiums because you will have cash to cover higher deductibles.

lotoex ahhhh. Rudy mislead me. I read the guys post. I guess Rudy assumed he needed cash because he sold them at such a discount. Thanks for the clarification. Guess he just wanted to shift his portfolio and was willing take the hit. I know Rudy would give the same advice. well rudy, funny thing is i didn't invest in sealed product, i invested in crap bulk, with the intention to get crap bulk and from that have over 20,000 different cards collected. on ebay alone people are pushing that high of a rate at 25 cents per card so roughly for something i spent under a hundred hours putting together i'm looking at a $4,500 return easy lol.

I'm not sure if you can help but in 2008 ish I was at a magic the gathering tournament at a local game store where the winner got a box that had like 10 or 13 or 15 dragon cards in it. It was kinda a wide box with a clear display and I think 5 of the dragons were on display. Anyway I just wondering if anyone know what this dragon set was called so I could look it up. Thanks.

Investing in any type of cards (e.g. baseball, MTG, etc.) is difficult because most card prices don't spike to the point where you see a return value until 10-20 years later. MTG investment is difficult since card prices are dependent on demand, and demand is usually influenced by consistent cards featured in Top 8 finishes at major MTG tournaments. On a side note: I just want one of those boxes.....just one.

This is currently how I am investing in magic. I only buy a few boxes at a time, then let them ferment in my basement for 5-10 years. Then when I need the money I sell some or all. Its mostly just a minor hobby, but I have never lost money doing this, probably make 2-3x what I paid for the box originally, some times more, future sight I'm looking at you. Any way, good insight.
