Great tips! Good to know I'm not crazy for thumping my melons, ha ha! I actually equate the hollow sound I get from thumping the melon as a sign of it's juiciness. Works every time. But now I know how to pick a sweet one! Thanks. :)

very well done, thanx love the twist idea for the wrap; I eat watermelon literally every day of the year, and right about now even the ones from South America come in either over or under ripe often, so like you said, I take them back to Bravo tropical supermarket where they are sold year round, and they graciously take them back. I just bought personal size yesterday at Save a Lot and am about to have one for breakfast. They too will take them back, no problem. Since I am a vegan, I bring lots of produce back; its a good way to keep their Produce Dept. in the feedback loop.

You only need to score the rind (the outer shell) and then a gentle thump (a little harder than you would do when checking for ripeness) and the mellon will split along the score mark. The red stuff on the inside will be a little ragged, but if all you want to do is get it open, this way will work.

I'm still looking for that "ripe" watermelon in the markets.... like the ones we used to eat when I was living in Texas. I remember it making this crisp, cracking like sound and it almost breaking open itself after cutting it in half, how "red" it was and how crispy sweet. I haven't had a really sweet watermelon since. I think the ones in the markets are picked too soon. Some where ou there, that "ripe" watermelon is waiting for me to find it! ha,ha!

I’m in my second year of gardening. This year my watermelon‘s are growing too full girth; however, none of them seem to be fully ripe! One, look like it had been frostbitten; we have not had a night under 65°. I even had one that had a half a dollar sized mold in it! What’s going on? What did I do wrong? How can I prevent this?

there is a simple rule to picking a good watermelon. Always get the biggest one. Melons try to make seeds first(even seedless) then flavor and sugar. If the melon is smaller than it should for a particular variety it will be like a cucumber! Also early in the season, get the duller thumping ones, later they will be the ones that are too ripe. In that case get one with more of a ring.

Question. What if you get a striped watermelon seedless round that does not have a yellow spot on it? Does that mean that it is riper or less ripe than a watermelon with a yellow spot? Do the farmers ever rotate watermelons in the field so they don't have a yellow spot?

Everyone talks about "whether or not it's ripe yet". That doesn't bother me at all. What I want to know is how to tell if it's rotten. I got one that exploded almost, and the inside was fermented. How do you tell that?

Green ones are one thing, over-ripe ones are another. If you thump it and it does not vibrate cleanly (more like a dull thud of hitting a wet cement sack) It may be over-ripe. also if you press on the underside does it start to give way too easily!

I buy a watermelon at least every week and, despite all attempts to pick a good one, I find it very hit or miss. Do you think the seedless ones are not as sweet and tasty as the seeded one? I pretty much only see seedless ones these days and they just don't taste like the ones I used to get years ago.

I will have to look into that. Corn has been the hot button on the GMO front, but that stuff is taking place in all segments of the market. I have always wondered how you plant seedless watermelons, so maybe it's time I find the answer on that.

+YourProduceGuy something to do with chromosomes and using a sterile female plant and pollinating it with a non sterile male plant, this gives the watermelon either no seeds or if any the small white small seeds.

Another tip my Mom uses is that she'll ask the produce guy to CUT the watermelon in half before she purchases it. It's nice they let you return them but for an older lady .. it's hard returning a bad WM (10-12lbs) that she can barely carry. I stick to the personal size ones personally.
