If you pass 70 units at a CC, a UC school isn't going to "cut you off." Yes, only 70 units count towards a B.A or B.S., but the lower-division coursework will count regardless of taking them after passing 70 units. For example, STEM classes have a lot of pre-reqs that are taken in CC that will no longer count at UC's when the approved class is taken. Transfer students aren't penalized for completed "too many" units nor is it detrimental.
@katherinel89702 жыл бұрын
ok thanks phew! because i accidentally took classes that didn't count towards my major and wasted units lol
@albertc23902 жыл бұрын
Agreed. You are not penalized for exceeding the amount of units needed to transfer. In fact, in my experience, the four-year institution will allow you to carry a few more units than the requisite units needed to transfer. Of course, they have to be UC/CSU transferable. It is also not entirely true that you only take UD courses when you enter the four-year institution as a transfer. Again, there are LD classes that you can take at a CC that count toward your major. This, of course, ties back to the amount of UC/CSU transferable units that you are taking with you. As a bit of advice, try to take as many LD classes toward your major at your respective CC. It will save you money down the line. If you are unsure how this works, talk to a counselor. You don't want to waste money by taking too many classes that you cannot transfer over either. Good video overall but some details are not exactly accurate.

Hi Hailey! I had a question about transferring to UCLA. My gpa is a 3.9 and I wanted to know if not having honors classes would hurt my chance of getting accepted. I would join the TAP program but it’s been kinda weird with my school and I don’t think I’ll be there long enough to complete 5 courses of honors.
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege3 жыл бұрын
Hi Liliana, I cannot comment on your chances of being accepted as I do not work for the admissions committee. I can say that being a part of TAP is highly advantageous for transfer applicants. I would encourage you to look at UCLA's Profile of Admitted Students to find out more about the stats for applicants who have been accepted in previous years.

Hello! I am very confident about my application to UC. I have a 3.97, good essays, good extracurriculars. Only one thing is irking me... I only have 9 grades to show to UC by the end of this fall. I am taking 11 classes across this coming winter and spring (quarter system), so 20-21 classes in all. However I am just scared that 9 grades may not be enough to show for UC.
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, one of the most important factors that UC takes into consideration is pre-major preparation. It's especially important to follow the IGETC pattern and take as many courses as possible that you will need for your major, as outlined on assist.org. It seems like your courseload is pretty light, are you trying to transfer in less than 1 year?
@incompkumaar42485 жыл бұрын
@@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege I will be igetc certified and done with all lower division requireemnts for my major outlined on assist.org. The reason I have relatively fewer courses than others is because I am using 6 AP tests to help clear the igetc and prerequisites.

and yes I am transferring in 1 year. The majority of the courses I have were taken during my time in high school as dual enrollment

If you've met all the requirements then why stress? Stop putting yourself through hell over something that's out of your hands, especially knowing that you have done everything you can! Based off what you just told me you are lot more prepared than I ever was, along with most other people that I know who currently go to UC. I urge you to change your mindset - you're killing yourself!

What would you suggest that I prioritize (getting all GE/major prep or not exceeding units) if requirements for my major (cogsci) are VASTLY different for UCLA vs Berkeley vs UCSD and I can't possibly finish them all on time?
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege5 жыл бұрын
You will not be expected to finish all of them completely. Just focus on completing the requirements for your top choice to the best of your ability, and work on the others if time permits. Good luck.

Hi! Thank you so much for this! I had a question about completing the major prereqs that are listed on assist - would it still be fine if some of those prerequisites are in progress or planned courses for the spring semester (after the application during fall)? I'm worried about whether I should aim to complete the major prereqs before the fall semester when I submit my application (for a relatively~highly selective major, if that matters). Also, will the UCs follow up on an applicant's Spring semester grades before releasing decisions? Thank you! :)
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristina, it's ideal to have as many prereqs as possible completed before you apply, but it's fine to be taking classes in the Spring. UC makes admissions decisions based on your grades through the Fall semester. Your final Spring semester is not apart of that consideration.

I'm currently finishing my AA and IGETC at my community college and I have a 2.5 GPA and I want to transfer to UCLA as a history major I believed this major is not that competitive at UCLA should I increase my GPA before transferring or keep it
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege5 жыл бұрын
Generally, you should always strive to earn the highest grades possible. When it comes to schools like UCLA, the minimum GPA to be considered for admission is going to be even higher than other UCs. For UCLA it is 3.2 because it is such a competitive school. Even a non-competitive major at UCLA is still competitive compared to other schools in the UC system (ex: Riverside or Santa Cruz). You can check out UCLA's profile of admitted transfer students if you want to see the GPA of most students in your desired major. It might help you get an idea of what you need to be a competitive applicant.

You may not know this for sure and that is ok, but would not taking one class that is listed on ASSIST for a specific UC limit your chances of getting into that UC? I'm on track to complete all the courses listed on the UC Transfer Pathways for my major and I'm completing all the IGETC as well as all the requirements for a lot of the UCs but UCSD requires all psychology majors take one CS course as well and I can't fit another class anywhere else into my schedule. I don't want to have to be held back a whole year just for one or two classes, as I will have all their other requirements done. Same goes for Berkeley. They require two social sciences courses and I will only be able to take one. I feel like some of the UCs have such specific requirements that it is difficult to do all of them, but I did as many of them as I could.
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege5 жыл бұрын
Momina Nadeem hey! your goal should be to complete as many as possible. it’s not practical to do every single class for every single school that you’re applying to, and you’re not expected to do that either. If it comes down to something like this, just take the one that applies to the school you’re more likely to transfer to.
@sruvix2 жыл бұрын
Hey! I’m in your same situation. Any updates?
@MomoNadeem2 жыл бұрын
@@sruvix It depends on the major and how impacted it is. I didnt finish all the requirements on ASSIST for UCSD and I got in, but I didn't get into UCLA or Berkeley. UCLA's requirements for my major listed that finishing every course listed is required because of how impacted that major is. Berkeley's didnt explicitly state you needed to finish everything, but I guess it was implied.

Does anyone have any insight or know someone who transferred to a UC as a public health science major from cc?

I see you are saying to take major lower division classes at Community College but I haven't completed all of them. I can stay another year at CC and that would be 4th year at CC. I am majoring in Bioengineering and I got accepted at UCR and I am still waiting to hear from UCLA and UCSD. So should I stay at CC or transfer? Any advice?
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege4 жыл бұрын
Hi Viraj, it's really your personal choice. If your goal is to transfer, then it seems like you have already done that, so it seems counterproductive to stay at CC another year and have to reapply to transfer all over again.

Wait i'm going to have around 80.5 semester units when i complete all my courses. I don't understand how this will negatively affect me just by going over the 60 unit minimum.
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege5 жыл бұрын
It may give you some difficulty down the road when you do transfer to UC and you are trying to enroll in classes/graduate. I'm not sure if each UC handles it the same way but I know at UCLA for example, they convert your units into quarter units and cut you off at the 105 unit level so that you don't have to deal with any negative effects from having an excess of credit. However, some majors do require a great number of (heavy unit) classes, such as STEM majors, in which case this shouldn't be an issue. The point is that if you are following the IGETC pattern, going over the number of units required to transfer by a large amount could impact your ability to enroll in classes/graduate at the university level.
@chanleakhanathon5 жыл бұрын
@@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege Okay thank you. So since I'm a STEM major I shouldn't worry too much about this?
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege5 жыл бұрын
Can't say for certain since I'm not a STEM major, but from what I've heard it shouldn't be a problem. You would have to double check with an academic advisor at the school you want to transfer to. Either way sticking as closely to IGETC/your pre-major requirements as possible is the safest bet.

Don't freak out! If I were you I would set up an appointment with a counselor ASAP and see if they can create a new academic plan for the time you have left at community college. This way you can focus on taking only the classes that are absolutely necessary to transfer. This doesn't mean that you won't be able to transfer but it may give you some difficulty down the road when you do transfer to UC and you are trying to enroll in classes/graduate. I'm not sure if each UC handles it the same way but I know at UCLA for example, they convert your units in quarter units and cut you off at the 105 unit level so that you don't have to deal with any bad effects from having an excess of credit.

Hailey Dollar I finished IGETC and I’m only taking my assist courses right now like biology, chemistry, physics! So if they cut my units off at that 105 quarter units, does that mean I have to retake those classes?
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege6 жыл бұрын
I'm not exactly sure but my guess would be no. I think it would depend on the school you end up transferring to though.
@shelleyn28846 жыл бұрын
Actually there isn’t a downside to taking the max transferable units at CC which is 70 semester units ( 105 qtr). Just means you have fewer to take at the UC. Typically you take all your major classes and have to take some random electives to accululate to the units required to graduate. So you don’t have to do as much of that if you come in with 70 instead of the 60 minimum req.
@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege6 жыл бұрын
Hi Shelley, if you are talking about the elective units that you have to take to graduate from UC they are very specific. Sometimes there are undergrad electives or requirements that you must complete at the UC level that are not offered at CC. These could be general education requirements or electives within your major. If you exceed 60 but there are some lower division requirements that you still need to complete as well then you could find yourself in a predicament. As you say, 105 is the maximum transferable units and once you exceed this point you will be cut off so it is essentially useless to continue taking classes.
@sincerely79575 жыл бұрын
@@HaileyDollarGoesToCollege Yes, you are cut off after 70 semester / 105 quarter units, but the amount of units is only viewed and considered numerically and not time wise, so your required classes still count even after exceeding the amount. UC schools will count certain pre-reqs or classes not applicable to your major or GE's as "credit" instead of units to make space for the courses and units towards your undergraduate degree.

It is possible to double major as a transfer but I do not have experience with it. I imagine that if would involve meticulous planning to make sure that all requirements are satisfied. You will also only be admitted for one major, so you would probably have to petition a second major after you transfer and there's no guarantee that it would be granted. But other have done it before!

Hi there! The only thing you can really do is continue taking classes to raise your GPA. Of course you could always retake the class, but the grade will not replace the your original grade on your transcript because you did not receive an F. I would recommend retaking the class anyway, it says a lot about you as a student to colleges if you plan on transferring.
