I love this video for two reasons. (1) It shows the reality of shooting and that not all shoots are hugely successful (don’t we ALL know that) (2) It shows a man and his dog working in tandem, despite a self confessed lack of experience (who EVER stops learning?) Well done Rod - Thanks for sharing 👍🏻

Maisy looks like she is enjoying the great outdoors. How does she go with the odd bit of goat meat? Subsonics? The trick is to achieve sufficient spin rate to stabilize the long, heavy bullets. This means that the rifling twist for, say, a 220 gn spitzer bullet needs to be in the region od 1: 8 inches. Hence the original Alexander Arms .300 Whisper (now the .300 Blackout) used 1: 8" twist barrels. Some even tried 1:7" in really cold conditions .The other thing with long, sleek fast-spinning bullets is that they are traveling too slow to reliably "mushroom". However, as soon as the marginally-stable bullet starts to enter 'tissue", they become wildly unstable and begin to "tumble", end over end; sort of a "chainsaw" effect.. Most "commercial .308 Win barrels are rifled at 1:12" twist. some early ones tried 1: 14" twist, but those were designed for 144-150gn boat-tails in 28-29" full-bore" target rifle barrels. There is too much internal capacity on a .308 Win case for "consistent ignition and clean burn of the propellant. Hence the .300 Blackout. . Easy to reload, easy to make "field" cases from 5.56 ex-Mil brass. (you don't really want to be dropping expensive Starline cases into the weeds on a regular basis.
@RJMHuntingAustralia3 ай бұрын
LOL. That was one of my concerns when I bought 6 packs of the starline brass 🤦♂️ My 308 is a 1:10 so 190gr projies stabilise well. Case capacity is the issue. 300 Blk already in the works mate.

Big mob indeed Rod , I have been using the 300 AAC with 110g pills, good knock down power still with those, I tried the subs but the drop they give made it difficult on moving targets. Keep up the great work.

This reminds me of a session here in England. The keeper had a herd of Fallow that had got into a small deer fenced wood. He told me to bring plenty of ammo, as he had blocked the hole they had entered through. I entered through a gate with the .243 and full clips. I had walked about 50 yards when my phone vibrated in my pocket. looking at the screen revealed it was the keeper. The whole herd had jumped the deer fence and ran across the road in front of his landrover 😪.

Being on your own the minute you open fire you're only gonna take out a small number anyway , once they are on the run .Why be disappointed about that !!!! I used to go with my best mate back in the 80's , my two sons and his two Sons and we might take out 11 or 15 or so of a 40 number herd . I only used 222 , my mate had 22 250 , my son had a 270 , and his other a 3030 , some times my mate liked to change up to 308 etc . He like using different guns , but i only ever had a Tika 222 , still got it . That was a big herd and on your own you can only ever make a small dent in a herd that big unless you got a lotta blokes . It was Good fun anyway . 👍👍cheers mate .
