Boxing fans are familiar with the two heavyweight bouts between James J. Corbett and Joe Choynski, but few know of their early encounters when both were in their teens.

I have read of the encounters between these two ring greats. Their bouts were epic events in the community in which they resided. Unfortunately, their rivalry also smacked of the intense ethnic tensions that existed in this region of California. Their two bouts also foretold the pugilistic geatness that both men were to attain in their respective porfessional careers.

Frank, someone wrote long ago that without racial-ethnic-national tensions there would be no legalized boxing. Since the tensions exist then maybe having 2 fighters settle things ... at least for awhile ... is a beater alternative to gang fights or actual wars.
