A far cry from what Tiger ace Otto Carius described in his memoirs about organizing an attack with his group of Tigers. Carius always did a recce, usually in a kubelvagen to observe enemy activity and the lie of the land, and considered the terrain carefully. Getting stuck in a heavy tank is always a problem, and needs careful thought before committing. If you have limited mobility against what must always be assumed, numerically superior Soviet forces, then you need to have good fields of fire to prevent being flanked and never just plunge blind into the terrain that offers the enemy cover. Carius explains that by 1944, getting good experienced crews and commanders was difficult.

I also read that combat story in a book. However it was a very lucky situation 3 king tigers were ambushed by T-34 effectively. At that time Germany suffered from shortages of highly experienced tank crews.. very young teen agers had to get in tanks to fight against huge masses of allied forces. At frontal attack, that T-34 could never stand a chance to knock out that huge beast. On the other side that Soviet tank commander was very shrewd and smart to hit the weak point of flank. Those poor beasts were ambushed successfully. That turret was too heavy to rotate and ran very slow enough to be an easy target in close distance………

Soviet accounts of tank battles are almost as fictional as German. The Russian tanks were hampered by gun performance. the 85mm was roughly equivalent of the US 76mm M1 and the 122mm the US 90mm M1. The Russian guns suffered from poor ammunition, Soviet AP rounds were too brittle and would often break up. If Tiger 2s were knocked out it would be at very short range, I suspect the Tiger 2s were bogged down in the loose earth.

Love reading the comments making excuses for way the nazi s lost many of their tank battles or battles of any kind like here that it was because they had untrained crews. The Soviet crews were poorly trained most of the war due to nazi invasion of their land many Soviet tank crews only had a few hours of training before being thrown in to battles same for many of their pilot s and infantry. Plus with no radio s in most tanks they could not work well together. The Soviet training ground was the battle field because the damn nazi s were foolish enough to invade them. Nazi s were well trained from boyhood like most Japanese but they lost anyway s it was only the very end they had poorly trained men💥💥💥

I think there was a huge missed opportunity for the Germans of placing an 88 onto a light tank. The Germans kept going bigger and heavier when they shoule have gone smaller and lighter with the same firepower. Lower the profile below the Jagdpanther/Tiger making them even harder to hit. Only give them enough armor to stop machine gun fire and let their speed be their armor.

It would have to be an ambush, The Tiger 2, was not a tank you’d want to fight head on, even a Tiger 1 , you wouldn’t want to fight head on. Unfortunately, any tank is only as good as the crew operating it, and reconnaissance, and a plan of attack is also important. Reconnaissance is so you don’t get ambushed, and a battle plan gives an objective. With out those things, your just an oversized target!
@generalhorse493

@@generalhorse493 I’ve heard this story twice, and they never mentioned the skills of the Tiger tank crews, my guess they just wanted to test the tank itself, and probably did not have good crews with a lot of battle experience, combine that with an ambush, and basically you have a doomed battle plan. The issue with doing realistic like that is it’s a bitch to actually implement. For example if you think King Tigers would be kings of the game think again if you want it realistic. In the battle of Oglendow, the first recorded deployment of the Tiger II, one T34 destroyed three King Tigers. Yeah the Tiger II had really thick armour but it was usually of low quality steel and the welds were often known to shatter from incoming rounds. If you want realistic this is what will have to be simulated too. On top of that there’s the ‘soft factors’ you have to take into account, namely reliability. An extract from a source I read “The unit had disembarked earlier at Kielce with 45 King Tigers but by the time it had reached the vicinity of Ogledow on the evening of 11 August 1944, it was down to only eight tanks. The rest had broken down during the 45 km road march, mainly due to reduction gear failures”. Historical match making makes sense for a game like Enlisted or Hell let loose. Games where tanks aren’t just fighting other tanks otherwise yeah everyone would play the Germans for that easy win. Warthunder does a good job of matchmaking

Is normal 'case hardening' being referred to? By this point in the 1939-45 War the Germans had very limited supplies of the 'ingredients' for improving armour plate. It should perhaps also be noted that Soviet metallurgical abilities were even worse at this time, simply due to 'lack of technology'.

@@smurra3 You don't understand the will and the fighting spirit of the Russian people. Each one of the Allies helped each other. Without the U.K's atomic research and gas turbine technology how far behind would the USA have been? It's rather petty-minded to start ''us and them'' comments. Without the Soviet Army WW2 would have dragged on for months. They had 80% of the Nazis fighting on the Eastern Front. The Western Allies had it easy in comparison as the Eastern Front was a particularly brutal war. The Soviets lost more than 27 million people, ridding the world of German Nazis (only to find they are fighting Ukrainian Nazis now). The UK & Commonwealth lost less than 500,000 The USA approximately 480,000 and that includes the Pacific War casualties. Russia has never been appreciated for what it did as the USA stirred up so much anti-Russia phobia it drew up plans to destroy Russia because they were becoming a threat to US hegemony and global dominance. Google search ''The Rand Report 2019'' for the evidence. The US & UK arrogance continues with their imperialistic opinions and colonial mentality. NATO is simply part of the US Empire. It should have expired 30 years ago.

The 501st Tankers were all Elite Men who had proven themselves in tank combat most of them were already highly decorated.. And most of them started out in panzer IIIs or worse. That is how they were chosen to serve in the Tiger II.. I highly doubt that this story is true. As far as them abandoning tanks and leaving critical info behind. I read "Tigers in the Mud" By Otto Carius, Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. He was in the 502nd heavy tank battalion. He never mentioned anything close to this scenario. The Germans went out of their way to recover Tiger Tanks and most of the time they were back in action in a couple days. This report is Russian, and sounds like typical exaggerated claims. The Germans, during the latter part of the war, could not recover their tanks as they lost ground to the allies. Any German armour that was not mobile had to be abandoned to advancing alllied forces. Many tigers were lost without any chance of recovered and were disabled or burnt out by their own crews or recovery crews and by german infantry to avoid it being captured realatively intact. The old saying the big German cats killed themselves. On a percentage basis, tank on tank moments were rare, and armour was mainly used to support other ground forces. There were not too many intact Tiger tanks or Panther tanks at wars end in running order. There were many instances due to its weight in difficult terrain, Tiger tanks were simply abandoned as unrecoverable. The tracked vehicle that was most successful in the antitank role in ambushes was the Sturmgeschutz, which accounted for many allied tanks being knocked out of action.
