When Magnus CRUSHED Hikaru After Arriving Late
Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura are among some of the most well-known faces when it comes to chess. Despite the intense battles between the two of them, what if I told you that Magnus once beat Hikaru in a Blitz tournament with a 30 second deficit?
Norway Chess, one of the most prestigious chess tournaments in the world, kicks off with a thrilling Blitz tournament. The Blitz tournament determines the main section seating for the players. The top five performers secure the advantage of playing five games with white and four games with black. The performers outside of the top five would play 5 games with black, and 4 games with white.
This incredible showdown started with a surprising twist. As the clock began, Magnus was missing from his seat, leaving Hikaru confused. Hikaru, with the white pieces, and being the gentleman that he is, chose not to start the clock until the arbiter intervened.
Magnus dashed in, taking his seat, but with a significant time disadvantage of 30 seconds on the clock. In a Blitz game, that's a substantial deficit, even for one of the world's top players. However, this setback didn't deter Magnus, who is known for his incredible strategic prowess. Let's discuss how he turned the tide against Hikaru.
